Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, supercritical fluids have emerged as more sustainable alternatives for the organic solvents often used in polymer processes. This is the first book emphasizing the potential of supercritical carbon dioxide for polymer processes from an engineering point of view. It develops a state-of-the-art overview on polymer fundamentals, polymerization reactions and polymer processing in supercritical carbon dioxide. The book covers topics in a multidisciplinary approach starting from polymer chemistry and thermodynamics, going through monitoring, polymerization processes and ending with polymer shaping and post-processing. The authors are internationally recognized experts from different fields in polymer reaction engineering in supercritical fluids. The book was initiated by the Working Party on Polymer Reaction Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and further renowned international experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of chemical reactions in the supercritical region of water requires a knowledge of the thermodynamic quantities (equilibrium constants, enthalpy changes, entropy changes, and heat capacity changes) associated with water dissociation and solute-solute interaction in this region. In this study, these quantities have been determined to 350 or, in some cases, to 370 deg C for water ionization and alkali and alkaline earth chloride ion interaction. The determinations were made using a high precision flow calorimeter designed and constructed to withstand the corrosive and high temperature conditions encountered in the study. The results are consistent with a model involving water molecules as active participants in the reactions. As temperature increases, the percentage of water molecules participating in hydrogen bonding decreases with resulting large effects on enthalpy changes, entropy changes and heat capacity changes values for chemical reactions. The equilibrium constants and enthalpy changes values provide essential information for the design of processes intended to operate under supercritical water conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calorimetry is one of the oldest areas of physical chemistry. The date on which calorimetry came into being may be taken as 13 June 1783, the day on which Lavoisier and Laplace presented a contribution entitled ,,Memoire de la Chaleur“ at a session of the Academie Française. Throughout the existence of calorimetry, many new methods have been developed and the measuring techniques have been improved. At p- sent, numerous laboratories worldwide continue to focus attention on the development and applications of calorimetry, and a number of com- nies specialize in the production of calorimeters. The calorimeter is an instrument that allows heat effects in it to be determined by directly measurement of temperature. Accordingly, to determine a heat effect, it is necessary to establish the relationship - tween the heat effect generated and the quantity measured in the ca- rimeter. It is this relationship that unambiguously determines the mathematical model of the calorimeter. Depending on the type of ca- rimeter applied, the accuracy required, and the conditions of heat and mass transfer that prevail in the device, the relationship between the measured and generated quantities can assume different mathematical forms.

Book excerpt: A hot-zone reaction calorimeter is described and tested by measuring the enthalpies of reduction of copper and lead oxides by hydrogen gas. The heats of formation of these oxides, in various modifications and crystal structures, were determined. The thermal decompositions of chromium and molydbenum carbonyls were investigated and the enthalpy changes for these reactions were determined. Thermal decomposition studies were also made on chromium bibenzene. (Author).
