Book excerpt: Despite its apparent simplicity and even if it has been studied intensively in various contexts, the two-dimensional Hubbard model is not yet completely understood. In particular when it describes a system with an intermediate interaction, out of range for perturbative methods, its ground state is still not well known. The discovery in 1986 of a superconducting phase in the copper oxides (cuprates), which appears at rather high temperature, has further enhanced the interest for this model, as it may describe the amazing poperties of these layered materials. Indeed, when the electronic density corresponds to a half-filled band, the Hubbard model is known to nicely account for the antiferromagnetic phase obtained experimentally for the cuprates and it is possible, as first proposed by P.W. Anderson, that it describes equally well the superconducting phase observed below a critical temperature, when the electronic density is moderatly reduced by modifying the compound composition (doping). In this case, the superconductivity originates from purely electronic interactions, contrary to conventional superconductivity where the interaction between electrons and lattice vibrations (phonons) is involved. Unfortunately, very few stringent results are available in order to support this statement and this question is still largely debated. In this thesis, the variational method is used in order to scrutinize the possibility of a superconducting ground state for the repulsive Hubbard model. Although its reliability is based on the adequate choice of the variational wave function, this method is especially suited for treating intermediate interactions, which is the appropriate regime of the cuprates. The optimization of a refined wave function allows us to obtain a variational ground state which is much closer to the exact ground state than those obtained so far using less elaborate wave functions. Actually, the exact study of small systems indicates that the error of our calcul.

Unbiased numerical calculations within two-dimensional Hubbard models have found no evidence for long-range superconducting order. Most of the two-dimensional theories suggest that the superconducting state can be obtained by destabilizing an antiferromagnetic or spin-liquid insulating state. An antiferromagnet is a half-filled system because each site has one electron or hole. However, in anisotropic triangular lattices, numerical calculation finds pairing enhancement at quarter-filling but no long-range superconducting order. Many organic superconductors are dimerized in nature. Such a dimer lattice is effectively half-filled because each dimer has one electron or hole. Some theories suggest that magnetic fluctuation in such a system can give superconductivity. However, at zero temperature, we performed density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in such a system, and we find no superconducting long-range order. We also find that the antiferromagnetic order is not necessary to get a superconducting state. Failure in explaining superconductivity in two-dimensional systems suggests that only repulsive interactions between electrons are not sufficient, and other interactions are required. The most likely candidate is the electron-phonon interaction. However, existing theories of superconductivity emphasize either electron-electron or electron-phonon interactions, each of which tends to cancel the effect of the other. We present direct evidence from quantum Monte Carlo calculations of cooperative, as opposed to competing, effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions within the frustrated Hubbard Hamiltonian, uniquely at the band-filling of one-quarter. Bond-coupled phonons and the onsite Hubbard U cooperatively reinforce d-wave superconducting pair-pair correlations at this filling while competing with one another at all other densities. Our work further gives new insight into how intertwined charge-order and superconductivity appear in real materials.

Book excerpt: Many properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model have been explored for the model parameters appropriate for strongly correlated electronic systems, especially cuprate superconductors. Most of the calculations are done using a well-established dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo method. Using this method, we investigate the effect of long-range hoppings on superconductivity with and without the presence of phonons on small clusters. The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, is found to generally decrease with a negative next nearest neighbor hopping, t'. In the presence of the Holstein phonons, a finite t' enhances Tc in the under-doped region for the hole-doped system, consistent with band structure calculations and experiment. The validity of the spin-susceptibility-mediated pairing in this model is studied and found to yield symmetries other than d-wave when a finite t' is considered. A new numerical algorithm for solving the embedded cluster problems is introduced, and used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the model on larger clusters, especially those associated with the quantum critical behavior at finite doping. Our results suggest that the quantum critical point (QCP) which separates the Fermi liquid and pseudogap regions, is the second order terminus of the line of first order phase separation transition in the limit when a positive t' goes to zero. For small t', the superconducting dome is centered at the QCP, suggesting that charge fluctuations might have a role in the pairing mechanism in this model.
