Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the art in superhero comics and how style influences comic narratives. For many, the idea of comic book art implies simplistic four-color renderings of stiff characters slugging it out. In fact, modern superhero comic books showcase a range of complex artistic styles, with diverse connotations. Leading comics scholar Jeffrey A. Brown assesses six distinct approaches to superhero illustration—idealism, realism, cute, retro, grotesque, and noir—examining how each visually represents the superhero as a symbolic construct freighted with meaning. Whereas comic book studies tend to focus on text and narrative, Super Bodies gives overdue credit to the artwork, which is not only a principal source of the appeal of comic books but also central to the values these works embody. Brown argues that superheroes are to be taken not as representations of people but as iconic types, and the art conveys this. Even the most realistic comic illustrations are designed to suggest not persons but ideas—ideas about bodies and societies. Thus the appearance of superheroes both directly and indirectly influences the story being told as well as the opinions readers form concerning justice, authority, gender, puberty, sexuality, ethnicity, violence, and other concepts central to political and cultural life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book provides fascinating insights into the fast-emerging body of research that explores the relationship between sport, theology and disability within a social justice framework. In the shadow of two major sport-faith events that fore-fronted the theology of disability sport, the Vatican’s international conference—Sport at the Service of Humanity and the Inaugural Global Congress on Sports and Christianity York St John University, UK, at which Dr Brian Brock led a thematic strand on the topic—this book provides a foundation for further research and practice. This text is a timely and important synthesis of ideas that have emerged in two previously distinct areas of research: (i) ‘disability sport’ and (ii) the ‘theology of disability’. Examples of subjects addressed in this text include: elite physical disability sport—Paralympics; intellectual disability sport—Special Olympics; equestrian sport; church, sport and disability, and; theologies of embodiment, competition and mercy. This book, written by leaders in their respective fields, begins a critical conversation on these topics, and many others, for both researchers and practitioners. The chapters originally published in the Journal of Disability and Religion and Quest.

Book excerpt: True to Our Native Land is a pioneering commentary on the New Testament that sets biblical interpretation firmly in the context of African American experience and concern. In this second edition, the scholarship is cutting-edge, updated, and expanded to be in tune with African American culture, education, and churches. The book calls into question many canons of traditional biblical research and highlights the role of the Bible in African American history, accenting themes of ethnicity, class, slavery, and African heritage as these play a role in Christian Scripture and the Christian odyssey of an emancipated people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hitler Wins of the novelette of Smart Arse got into ambrosia and the occult, and eventually it was entitled Superbitch. Terry Parrott had indulged anti-Semitism. Maldek and the calendar were attacked with the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, and antichristianity put the Jewification of Maldek, in its debunked place. His anti-Lamaism was put below his Maldekism or Maldekianism. Lamaism was Oriental Jewification of Maldek and Tree of Life. So there were things akin to limnology and antitreeoflife, which Thoreau and Emerson were assimilated by, ex post facto? Things akin to Maldek and Machinery's Handbook were signs of parasitic Jewification, including the penumbral, obvious R.U.R.'s references to science of war and oldest, pivotal religions. Heron clashed with weapons of Jews, or weapons of the Dead Sea Scrolls. So Lamaistically the wrong kinds of Jews had goaded plantations, making gestures of zoandry and The Koran. The mark of the beast was a castration of numerology, and devoid of the Dead Sea Scrolls it entails a magical significance, partly. Ex post facto, Jews attacked Tree of Life, utilizing zoandry and plantations, crookedly. So NAFTA had bolstered sparse population of Jews, in pastoral communities. So akin to Jews' imitation of numerology, other things were imitated and castrated, including the pentacle or the pentagram.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book provides a fascinating insight into the relationship between sports (and leisure), religion and disability. In the shadow of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, at which athletes that were both able-bodied and disabled, provided an extravaganza of sporting excellence and drama, this text is a timely and important synthesis of ideas that have emerged in two previously distinct areas of research: (i) ‘disability sport’ and (ii) the ‘theology of disability’. Many of the elite athletes at this global sporting mega-event often explicitly displayed their religious beliefs, and in turn their importance in the context of sport, by observing different religious rituals, and or, utilising the multi-faith sports chaplaincy service. This raises a whole range of unanswered questions with regard to the intersections between sports, religion and disability, which to-date has been under- researched. Examples of subjects addressed in this text include: elite physical disability sport--Paralympics; intellectual disability sport--Special Olympics; reflections on the illness narrative of the cyclist Lance Armstrong through the lens of the theology of ‘radical orthodoxy’; the application of biblical athletic metaphors in understanding modern conceptions of disability sport; the role of sport and spirituality in the rehabilitation of injured British Military personnel, and; the importance of sports and leisure in L’Arche communities. This book begins a critical conversation on these topics, and many others, for both researchers and practitioners. This book was based on two special issues of the Journal of Religion, Disability and Health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God will never be mad at you!” Although the Bible assures us that God’s essential nature is love, how seldom one hears such encouraging words in church. Maybe you are one of the many people who have dropped out of the church because of its prevalent portrayal of God as an unfriendly old man who is always angry with those who don’t shape up and, worse yet, plans to punish those who don’t believe and behave correctly with eternal conscious torment. If you’ve ever wondered whether the Bible supports such an irritated image of God, this book is for you. Looking closely at major beliefs and key passages of Scripture, author Morgan Roberts introduces us to a friendlier God, a God who is incapable of anything other than love, a God who will never give up on anyone—a God who even loves our enemies! Such a beautiful view of God is the result of the author’s lifetime journey as a pastor and teacher, a journey that began when, as a teenager, he happened to find a copy of the New Testament and began reading about a God who is endlessly, foolishly, and incredibly merciful.

Book excerpt: Since the dawn of film in the 1890s, religious themes and biblical subjects have been a staple of cinema. One of the earliest focuses of screen presentations was the Bible, especially the New Testament and the Gospels. In Screen Jesus: Portrayals of Christ in Television and Film, Peter Malone takes a close look at films in which Jesus is depicted. From silent renditions of The Passion Play to 21st-century blockbusters like The Passion of the Christ, Malone examines how the history of Jesus films reflects the changes in artistic styles and experiments in cinematic forms for more than a century. In addition to providing a historical overview of the Jesus films, this book also reveals the changes in piety and in theological understandings of the humanity and divinity of Jesus over the decades. While most of the Jesus films come from the United States and the west, an increasing number of Jesus films come from other cultures, which are also included in this study. Fans and scholars interested in the history of religious cinema will find this an interesting read, as will students and teachers in cinema and religious studies, church pastors, parish groups, and youth ministry.

Book excerpt: Are you walking in the victory Jesus purchased for you at the cross? Do you want a more intimate relationship with God? Are you willing to do what it takes to remove any obstacles in your spiritual walk? Author, Ginger Schievelbein, uses the basic steps outlined in James 4:7-8 to guide you through the process of healing and deliverance. She uses the gift of discernment of spirits and her ten years of ministry experiences to expand and emphasize the truth of these verses. This book is designed for individual or group study, and will teach you how to have more of God and less of yourself as you come near to Him. Ginger Schievelbein is a first time author who grew up in a typical Christian home. At the age of fifteen, she encountered God and received the gift of discernment of spirits. Since she did not fully understand the gift, she kept it a secret for ten years. Gradually, she began to share some of her spiritual experiences with the adults and children under her ministry. Ten years later, God asked her to step down from those responsibilities so that He could send more people to her for personal prayer and deliverance. This ministry has grown, and recently she became an ordained minister. She and her husband reside in Texas where she homeschools their two teenagers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all instruments of musical expression Bach preferred the organ. At the time when he was employed as court organist and chamber musician to Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar, Bach had to perform on the organ a great deal. He prepared a repertory for those performances which includes some of his greatest works as for instance: Fantasia & Fugue in G minor (The Great) Passacaglia in C minor, Prelude and Fugue in C Minor, 8 Little Preludes & Fugues and the wonderful Orgelbuechlein. Most of his organ works date from around 1708 to 1717, through the “Little” fugue in G minor was composed in 1700. This volume contains various Choral Preludes and a composition called 4 Duets. A “Duet” really means 2 part music, and not music for Clavier 4 hands.
