Two feuding neighbors who couldn't be more opposite, forced to live next door to one another. Neither is backing down. She drives him crazy with her loud nineties rap music. He gets under her skin the way he obsesses over his stupid perfect lawn. She fantasizes about having sex with the hot nerd-but with duct tape over his dumb mouth. He has dirty dreams of the bombshell beauty where he bangs the crazy right out of her-nightmares of course. Anger isn't the only thing heating up between these two. They think this is a battle only one of them can win... The growing attraction between them, though, seems to be far more stubborn than the two of them combined.

Book excerpt: Set in a farming community in the Karoo and in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, A Life To Live is the story of Nel, a farm girl who leaves home to find work in the city so that she can support her family during the years of the Great Depression. She takes a room in a rundown boarding house and is thrown among its noisy, shiftless inhabitants who move like detritus on a stagnant pool of poverty, drunkenness and decay. But Nel lives her life as best she can, honestly and with fortitude. She marries Piet, whose feckless ways ruin her hopes of achieving a decent life for both of them. When Piet dies Nel is destitute and she returns to the Karoo, dependant for the last years of her life on the bleak charity of her youngest sister, who has married a wealthy farmer. The reality of this novel is laced with humour and Burgess's skilful pen brings the characters to life in a powerful and moving way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of my several experiences, some good and some not so good. They include my pre-Depression years, which brought so many physical needs and so much humiliation during all those 1930s years. I review here my relationship with my parents and every member of our thirteen-people family crowded into five rooms with no central heat or central air-conditioning. As a youth, I survived the Great Depression and active service in the army in a combat zone. I guess that I am truly a member of the greatest generation. After a runaway wild time of youth, there came a big moral and spiritual turnaround that brought my life meaning and direction. Serving churches as a pastor, I recount many crazy and happy experiences that taught me many lessons that I never learned in seminary. Along the way, Alice and I were married and had two sons and one daughter. It was all so weird and beautiful.

Book excerpt: Can you name America’s oldest brewery? If visions of outsized draft horses plod to mind, you’re way off. Instead, head for the mountains—of northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1829, in Pottsville, German immigrant D.G. Yuengling set up shop to slake the thirst of immigrants flocking to the region’s booming anthracite coalfields. Five generations have steered the family-owned brewery through fires, temperance, depressions, Prohibition, and the whims of changing tastes; outlasted hundreds of local competitors; and turned Yuengling from a regional name into a national institution. For 175 years, the hard-working, hands-on approach of Yuengling has kept it going, and growing, while thousands of other brands vanished into history’s recycling bin. Kick back, relax, and crack open a cool history of Yuengling and Son, Inc., America’s oldest brewery. It begins with the brewery’s founding in 1829 by German immigrant D.G. Yuengling, who saw an opportunity in the region’s growing, beer-loving immigrant population. Subsequent chapters follow the brewery into the age of bottled beer and advertising; through the dark days of Prohibition; the age of consolidation, when a few big names swallowed up or buried most regional brews; and into the age of microbrews, when consumers turned away from bland brands in search of a beer with character, leading to Yuengling’s resurgence on the national scene. An epilogue gauges the company’s current status and immediate future, and a chronology lists key events in the brewery’s existence. Notes and copious illustrations supplement this history, which also includes a list of reference works, and an index.

Book excerpt: Perhaps all of Jonathan Ames’ problems–and the genesis of this hilarious book–can be traced back to the late onset of his puberty. After all it can’t be easy to be sixteen with a hairless “undistinguishable from that of a five year old’s.” This wonderfully entertaining memoir is a touching and humorous look at life in New York City. But this is life for an author who can proclaim “my first sexual experience was rather old-fashioned: it was with a prostitute”–an author who can talk about his desire to be a model for the Hair Club for Men and about meeting his son for the first time. Often insightful, sometimes tender, always witty and self-deprecating, What’s Not to Love? is an engaging memoir from one of our most funny, most daring writers.

Growing up in a blue-collar, Midwestern family, Melissa Stephenson longed for escape. Her wanderlust was an innate reaction to the powerful personalities around her, and came too from her desire to find a place in the world where her artistic ambitions wouldn’t be thwarted. She found in automobiles the promise of a future. From a lineage of secondhand family cars of the late ’60s, to the Honda that carried her from Montana to Texas as her new marriage disintegrated, to the ’70s Ford she drove away from her brother’s house after he took his life (leaving Melissa the truck, a dog, and a few mix tapes), to the VW van she now uses to take her kids camping, she knows these cars better than she knows some of the people closest to her. Driven from grief and toward hope, Melissa reckons with what it means to lose a beloved sibling. Driven is a powerful story of healing, for all who have had to look back at pain to find the way forward. “Written with a poet’s ear and a traveler’s grit, and it will be a comfort to anyone who has watched a loved one self-destruct.”—Sarah Hepola, author of Blackout “Not all writers are survivors and not all survivors are writers, but Melissa Stephenson is both and goddamn is she good. Driven is a book you will want to hold right against your heart, to take with you everywhere you go.”—Domenica Ruta, author of With or Without You

In this hilarious and heartfelt memoir, she charts her transition from party girl to parent, and how she eventually chose love over liquor. Victoria grew up in 1980s England in a happy home full of laughter, booze and a disturbing amount of fancy-dress parties. From her youthful days downing cheap wine at the local park to dodging disastrous relationships and a messy run-in with a firework, her reliable mate alcohol was never far from reach. Eventually, Victoria found herself in Australia with a husband and a child on the way. After sobering up for her first pregnancy, becoming a boring, bottom-wiping, cleaning machine meant she soon returned to her binge-drinking ways, and had to grapple anew with the habits and beliefs that had gone unchecked since childhood. Can a party girl put down the pint glass for good? Incredibly funny and highly relatable, A Thousand Wasted Sundays is for anyone that has ever had a close encounter of the drinking kind. For fans of Rosie Waterland, Judith Lucy, Dolly Alderton and Adam Kay.

Book excerpt: Japan's Cultural Code Words is a study of Japanese society through the understanding of the key terms and concepts that define their attitudes and behaviors. Japan's traditional culture is still so powerful that it continues to be the prevailing force in molding and tuning the national character of the Japanese, with the result that they still have two faces—one modern and rational, the other traditional and emotional. The best and fastest way to an understanding of the traditional and emotional side of Japanese attitudes and behavior is through their "business and cultural code words"—key terms that reveal, in depth, their psychology and philosophy. In 234 essays, arranged alphabetically from "Ageashi / Tripping on Your Own Tongue" to "Zenrei / Breaking the Molds of the Past". Long term expatriate and internationally renowned expert on Japan, Boye Lafayette De Mente offers personal insights into the extremes of Japanese behavior and into the dynamics of one of the world's most fascinating societies.

Book excerpt: Aspects of Colonial Tanzanian History is a collection of essays that examines the lives and experiences of both colonizers and the colonized during colonial rule in what is today known as Tanzania. Dr. Mbogoni examines a range of topics hitherto unexplored by scholars of Tanzania history, namely: excessive alcohol consumption (the sundowners); adultery and violence among the colonial officials; attitudes to inter-racial sexual liaisons especially between Europeans and Africans; game-poaching; European settler vigilantism; radio broadcasting; film production and the nature of Arab slavery in Zanzibar. A particularly noteworthy case related to European vigilantism is examined: the trial of Oldus Elishira, a Maasai, for the murder of a European settler farmer in 1955. The victim, Harold M. Stuchbery, was speared to death when he attempted to "arrest" a group of Maasai young men who were passing through his farm. The event highlighted the differences in the concepts of justice held by Maasai and the imported justice systems from the colonizers. It also raised vexing questions about the colonial judge's acquittal of Oldus Elishira, while the Maasai who should have been satisfied with that decision decided to take it upon themselves to mete out an appropriate punishment to Elshira instead of total acquittal, and to compensate Mrs. Stuchbery for the death of her husband by giving her a number of heads of cattle.
