Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summerland Sketches, or Rambles in the Backwoods of Mexico and Central America Twelve years ago I crossed the ocean of my own accord, and I do not repent it even now, he said, when be mounted his horse at the hospital gate. Mexico is the freest country on earth, after all. They may blockade the valleys, and change their President for a Sultan, for all I care but there is freedom in the mountains, and I know a place of refuge where neither monarchs nor demagogues will bother me. Book Synopsis The Key to the Kalevala by : Pekka Ervast
Download or read book The Key to the Kalevala written by Pekka Ervast and published by Blue Dolphin Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Key to the Kalevala was originally published in Finland in 1916. Now this insightful and detailed exploration of the ancient origins of Finnish mythology is available in English. Students of the ancient traditions and mystical teachings will find no better introduction to the profound esoteric meaning of the Kalevala, the Finnish National Epic, than Ervast's book. This translation is authorized by Ervast's study-school in Finland, whose members have worked to preserve his insights into his culture's past and the spiritual evolution of humanity. We also have the good fortune of being able to use Eino Friberg's beautiful translation of Kalevala (1988) into the modern American idiom. The combined work of Ervast and Friberg results in a unique, insightful, and aesthetically pleasing offering.
Book Synopsis William Grant Still by : Catherine Parsons Smith
Download or read book William Grant Still written by Catherine Parsons Smith and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compact introduction to the life and work of eminent African American composer William Grant Still (1895-1978), Catherine Parsons Smith tracks the composer's interrelated careers in popular and concert music. Still merged both musical traditions in his work, studying composition with George W. Chadwick at the New England Conservatory, collaborating with Langston Hughes on "Troubled Island," and working as a commercial arranger and composer on Broadway and radio during the Harlem Renaissance. Still also played in the pit band for "Shuffle Along," served as recording director for the first black-owned record label, Black Swan, and arranged music for artists such as Sophie Tucker, Paul Whiteman, and Artie Shaw. Best known for his "Afro-American Symphony" and other works that drew heavily on black American musical heritage, Still struggled against financial hardship and declining attention to his work, which he attributed to political and racist conspiracies. This "dean of Afro-American composers" created his own, unique version of musical modernism, influencing commercial music, symphonic music, and opera in the process."
