This bold picture book tells the story of the peace symbol—designed in 1958 by a London activist protesting nuclear weapons—and how it inspired people all over the world. Depicting the symbol's travels from peace marches and liberation movements to the end of apartheid and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Three Lines in a Circle offers a message of inspiration to today's children and adults who are working to create social change. An author’s note provides historical background and a time line of late twentieth-century peace movements.

Book excerpt: Researchers Fairchild and Boulay (2002, p. 4) provided terms such as "learning loss," "the summer gap," and the "summer setback" to describe the noticeable break in learning that occurs between the end of one school year and the start of the next. For the majority of children, summer results in a three-month vacation from structured learning activities. A number of researchers have studied the summer effect on student achievement, with many of their conclusions finding that student learning does decline during the summer months. Researchers have also established the degree of decline differs by socioeconomic status. A study conducted by Cooper (1996) described in the article Lost Summers, maintains that on average, summer vacations generate an annual reading achievement gap of nearly three months between students from the middle and lower-income families. In addition, research on the correlation between the volume of summer reading and summer reading setback found that children who read during the summer months were less likely to suffer from summer reading setback and more likely to have their achievement remain constant or increase slightly. The research supports the need for continued reading practice throughout the school year and during the summer months. Establishing a summer reading program would award the students in Hamilton Township, New Jersey supplementary learning time from which they all could benefit.

Since the old adage says, Every reader is a leader, it behooves us as responsible adults to help our children to develop a love for reading. Let us remember that every subject entails reading. As a result when we teach or encourage children to read, we incidentally teach the other subjects like math social studies, science and others. Bringing my own experiences into the lives of young children, I do realize that children show greater preference to read about topics they like. Consequently after my evaluation of reading materials for children, I have decided to focus on reading materials that are consistent with the high interest of your child. This strategy will surely awaken the childs interest in reading and most likely lead her to become the avid reader she is destined to be.
