Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Homes on Long Island: A Brief Description of New York and Brooklyn's Nearest Summer Resorts, With a List of Desirable Boarding Places and How to Reach Them by the Long Island Railroad Long Island is the natural and most accessible Summer retreat for persons residing in and about the city of New York. To business men who must be within easy access of their office Long Island offers advantages not possessed by any other near - by resort. The Long Island Railroad stations in New York City (manhattan) are at the foot of New Chambers Street, and at the foot of 34th Street, East River. An annex boat for the especial accommodation of down town business men is also operated during the Summer - June Ist to October rst, morning and afternoon - from Pier 18, foot of Pine Street, East River. The stations in New York City (manhattan) are readily accessible from the various railroad stations and steamboat piers by the elevated and surface lines. The terminus in Brooklyn is at Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues, and is reached from the Pennsylvania Railroad, Jersey City, by annex boat; also from the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the Ferries by the elevated and surface lines. There are also other stations in Brooklyn at Franklin and Atlantic Avenues (bedford Station), at East New York and at Bushwick, which are readily reached by the many car lines. The frequency of trains and the ease with which they can be reached makes the Long Island Railroad service equal to that of any other railroad operated out of New York City. The entire road-bed has been newly ballasted with heavy cinder ballast, thus absolutely avoiding dust and its general attendant unpleasantness. In addition to this the whole length of the road will be sprinkled with oil. For the past two years oil sprinkling has demonstrated for itself its efficiency to allay the dust and to keep the road-bed thoroughly clean. Positive safety (as well as ease and comfort of travel) is ensured by the use of heavy steel rails; hard-coal engines are in use, and the cars are illuminated by Pintsch gas. Long Island is 122 miles in length and from 8 to 20 in width, and within this area of square miles is almost every diversity of scenery. The climate is mild, and not liable to sudden changes or extremes of heat and cold. The temperature of Long Island is 10 degrees higher in Winter and 15 lower in Summer than in New York City. The modifying influences of the Ocean and the Gulf Stream are considerable. Statistics show that the mortality in Suffolk County and in the rural section of Queens County is lower than in any other part of the State. Long Island offers to the pleasure seeker unequalled surf and still-water bathing, ocean or bay sailing, brook, pond or ocean fishing, better shooting than can be found at a less distance than the Adirondacks; pleasant drives, unexcelled roads for bicycling, food fresh from the water, the air or the land, and atmosphere peculiarly invigorating and never tainted. Its pleasure resorts are especially attractive to women and children, because, being close to the city, the hotels and boarding houses are not abandoned by the men from Monday morning until Saturday night. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The south shore of Long Island, one of New York's greatest recreational assets, is receding at the rate of up to six feet per year. In many cases, efforts to halt this erosion actually have increased it. Buildings cone thought safely constructed back from high tidemarks today protrude far into the water. Even more, the number of homes an facilities built too close to the sea's edge has dramatically increased, making the south shore probably less ready to withstand a major storm than at the time of the cataclysmic hurricane of 1938. Thus, the question of what to do now to overcome and avoid these hazards takes on real urgency. Pointing to past mistakes, many Long Islanders insist that only by acting in an informed reasonable way can safe and environmentally sound development be possible for everyone.

Book excerpt: “The Summer Wives is an exquisitely rendered novel that tackles two of my favorite topics: love and money. The glorious setting and drama are enriched by Williams’s signature vintage touch. It’s at the top of my picks for the beach this summer.” —Elin Hilderbrand, author of The Perfect Couple New York Times bestselling author Beatriz Williams brings us the blockbuster novel of the season—an electrifying postwar fable of love, class, power, and redemption set among the inhabitants of an island off the New England coast . . . In the summer of 1951, Miranda Schuyler arrives on elite, secretive Winthrop Island as a schoolgirl from the margins of high society, still reeling from the loss of her father in the Second World War. When her beautiful mother marries Hugh Fisher, whose summer house on Winthrop overlooks the famous lighthouse, Miranda’s catapulted into a heady new world of pedigrees and cocktails, status and swimming pools. Isobel Fisher, Miranda’s new stepsister—all long legs and world-weary bravado, engaged to a wealthy Island scion—is eager to draw Miranda into the arcane customs of Winthrop society. But beneath the island’s patrician surface, there are really two clans: the summer families with their steadfast ways and quiet obsessions, and the working class of Portuguese fishermen and domestic workers who earn their living on the water and in the laundries of the summer houses. Uneasy among Isobel’s privileged friends, Miranda finds herself drawn to Joseph Vargas, whose father keeps the lighthouse with his mysterious wife. In summer, Joseph helps his father in the lobster boats, but in the autumn he returns to Brown University, where he’s determined to make something of himself. Since childhood, Joseph’s enjoyed an intense, complex friendship with Isobel Fisher, and as the summer winds to its end, Miranda’s caught in a catastrophe that will shatter Winthrop’s hard-won tranquility and banish Miranda from the island for nearly two decades. Now, in the landmark summer of 1969, Miranda returns at last, as a renowned Shakespearean actress hiding a terrible heartbreak. On its surface, the Island remains the same—determined to keep the outside world from its shores, fiercely loyal to those who belong. But the formerly powerful Fisher family is a shadow of itself, and Joseph Vargas has recently escaped the prison where he was incarcerated for the murder of Miranda’s stepfather eighteen years earlier. What’s more, Miranda herself is no longer a naïve teenager, and she begins a fierce, inexorable quest for justice for the man she once loved . . . even if it means uncovering every last one of the secrets that bind together the families of Winthrop Island.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spotlight with the publication of The Great Gatsby, the North Shore's Gold Coast boasted perhaps the greatest concentration of wealth in the country during the first half of the 20th century. In its heyday, over 1,200 grand homes lined the shoreline from Eaton's Neck to Great Neck and as far south as Old Westbury. With inspiration from around the globe, as well as the development of many new American styles, an architectural renaissance occurred, bringing together the greatest artisans, architects, landscape architects, and designers to create an exclusive enclave that flourished until World War II. Captains of industry, founding families, and even royalty called Long Island home. Everyone from Morgan, Woolworth, Vanderbilt, Hearst, Field, and Phipps to the Duke of Windsor resided here. Lavish parties celebrated weddings, Lindbergh's transatlantic flight, and other events. Today, approximately one-third of these houses still survive in various states, providing a glimpse of what was the Gold Coast.
