At such times barley water is Often well borne and seems to have a good effect upon the disease.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Infant Feeding Iibut rather to amalgamate the best points taught in this country and abroad into what I hope IS a homogeneous whole. It 1s desirable, of course, to make any subject as simple and as easily understandable as possible, and infant feeding need not be made complicated, but, on the other hand, any presenta tion which does not explain underlying processes and the basis of symptoms is not enough for the thinking practitioner of today. As I heard an eminent Philadelphia pediatrist say not long ago, there is at present a tendency to try to make infant feeding so easy for the physician that there is a chance of for getting whether or not the methods used may be suitable for the baby. The general standard of infant feeding in America has, however, improved greatly in the last ten years owing to the increased interest that general practitioners have taken in it, which is shown by the continually increasing numbers coming for instruction to the large post-graduate schools, such as the Harvard Graduate School of Medicine and the New York post-graduate School. To such men as this I respectfully offer this book, and sincerely hope that they may find it of value and interest. I wish especially to thank Dr. W. W. Howell for so kindly consenting to write the chapter on Premature Infants; Dr. R W. Lovett and other members of the staff for permitting me to use several pictures and Roentgen-ray plates taken from their cases in the Children's Hospital; Mr. J. V. Footman for kindly making the prints and taking many pictures, and the publishers for their many courtesies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Summer Care of Infants Mothers of small children should not work outside of their own homes. Infant mortality increases in proportion to the number of women who go out to work, even though this may result in a higher standard of comforts in the home itself. During the siege of Paris, so it is stated, even though it was a time of great famine and starve tion, and while there was a great increase in the general death rate, the mortality among infants fell 40 per cent. This was Simply because the women could not secure cow's milk for their babies, ndr were they able to work in the factories and shops, but were obliged to stay at home and nurse their babies. The same reduction of infant mortality was found during the great Lancaster cotton famine, when all the textile mills were closed. In the industrial centers of the United States, such as the mill towns of New England, where many women are employed, the mor tality among infants is almost twice as high as in Similar towns in which there are no women employed in factories. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition of the Infant IN his endeavour to make his practice as exact and scientific as possible, the author was at one time greatly discouraged by the fact that infant feeding apparently presented almost insuperable obstacles to its rational management in health, and to exact diagnosis and treat ment in the presence of disorder. While this applied, to some extent, to the management of breast feeding, it applied with greater force to substitute feeding. In hospital and private practice he was only too familiar with the various attempts to meet the requirements, and had frequent opportunities of testing the results of. Prao tically every method at all commonly used. But there were many failures, and, what was even more unsatisfactory, the successes were achieved by means so essentially empirical that they taught no lesson for the future. It must be confessed that others were satisfied where the author was greatly discontent. For it was said to be unreasonable to expect that artificial feeding should be so conducted that its results could be at all comparable with those of breast feeding. This attitude seemed to be the more serious in view of the number of women unable or unwilling to nurse their infants. New data have been added which brings the litera ture up to April 1, 1918. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Practice of Infant Feeding The dependence of the offspring upon its mother for food to supply its primitive needs can only be realized when we remember that one-fourth of the civilized race die during the first year of life, and that 60 per cent. of these deaths are due to nutritional disturbances, while a large portion of the other 40 per cent. are primarily dependent upon impairment of the infant's constitution by improper feeding. The mortality of the first year is nearly 60 times that of the fifteenth year, and it is not until we approach the 85th year that we meet with such a high percentage death-rate. The problem is not simply to save life during the perilous first year, but to adopt those means which shall tend to healthy growth and normal development. The child must be fed not only to avoid the immediate dangers of acute indigestion, diarrhea, and marasmus, but the more remote ones - rickets, scurvy, and general malnutrition. These latter three are the most important conditions that predispose to disease in early life. A growing child requires far more food than its weight would indicate. For, in the first place, its intake must exceed its expenditure, so that it may grow. The expenditure of an organism is pretty nearly in proportion, not to its mass, but to its surface. This is Carl Hiaasen's Florida—where the creatures are wild and the people are wilder! When Wahoo Cray’s dad—a professional animal wrangler—takes a job with a reality TV show called Expedition Survival!, Wahoo figures he'll have to do a bit of wrangling himself to keep his father from killing Derek Badger, the show's inept and egotistical star. But the job keeps getting more complicated: Derek Badger insists on using wild animals for his stunts; and Wahoo's acquired a shadow named Tuna—a girl who's sporting a shiner courtesy of her father and needs a place to hide out. They've only been on location in the Everglades for a day before Derek gets bitten by a bat and goes missing in a storm. Search parties head out and promptly get lost themselves. And then Tuna's dad shows up with a gun . . . It's anyone's guess who will actually survive Expedition Survival. . . “Only in Florida—and in the fiction of its native son Carl Hiaasen—does a dead iguana fall from a palm tree and kill somebody.” —New York Post “Chomp is a delightful laugh-out-loud sendup of the surreality of TV that will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.” —Los Angeles Times
