Book excerpt: Coherent motions are understood to play an important role in enhancing the momentum transport of turbulent wall bounded shear flows, but determining whether or not a coherent motion is present in a given volume of space at a particular time is still a difficult task. Although most detection schemes were developed for use within a specific region above the wall, most are ultimately used throughout the entire boundary layer. Three different probe based algorithms and three different visual detection schemes are applied to combined flow visualization and spanwise vorticity probe data taken in the near wall region and at y/delta of 0.8. Several new performance parameters have been developed, and they are calculated along with most of the commonly used evaluation parameters as functions of detection threshold and Reynolds number or y+. The one to one correspondence between probe based detections and visual detections is also evaluated using two parameters already in common use and a new parameter, P(T, t), which is based on the number of event overlaps as a function of time during an event inner, outer, and mixed variables are used whenever appropriate to scale all results, but only two Reynolds number independent curves are found which describe the outer region response of any detection algorithm as a function of threshold.

Some, but not all previous studies suggest that a large-scale, stationary array of counter-rotating vortices exists within the turbulent boundary layer on a concave wall. The objective of the present study was to obtain a qualitative model of the flow field in order to increase our understanding of the underlying physics. A large free-surface water channel was constructed in order to perform a visual study of the flow. Streamwise components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a hot film anemometer. The upstream boundary was spanwise uniform with a momentum thickness to radius of curvature of 0.05. Compared to flat wall flow, large-scale, randomly distributed sweeps and ejections were seen in the boundary layer on the concave wall. The sweeps appear to suppress the normal mechanism for turbulence production near the wall by inhibiting the bursting process. The ejections appear to enhance turbulence production in the outer layers as the low speed fluid convected from regions near the wall interacts with the higher speed fluid farther out. The large-scale structures did not occur at fixed spanwise locations, and could not be called roll cells or vortices. (Author).

The conference programme comprised 6 invited lectures and 94 contributions, presented either orally or at poster sessions. There were 165 participants from 18 countries. All papers published in these conference proceedings were, with the exception of the invited ones, again refereed by the members of the scientific committee. The main research topics discussed at this meeting were stability and gener ation of turbulence, effects of rotation, stratification and buoyancy forces, novel instrumentation, manipulation and control, boundary layers with separation and reattachment, computer simulation, turbulent diffusion, image analysis and flow visualization, vorticity dynamics and turbulence, and large-scale structures.
