Bartlett and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight investigation was made of a rocket-launched ram-jet engine incorporating an inlet designed for a Mach number of 4.1 and burning magnesium slurry fuel. In free-flight, the model accelerated from an Mach number of 1.73 and an altitude of 5,900 feet until burnout at a Mach number of 3.84 and an altitude of 38,100 feet in an elapsed time of 13.2 seconds. Maximum values of acceleration (6.1 g), air specific impulse (150 seconds), and gross thrust coefficient (0.760) were obtained. The value of fuel specific impulse was 770 seconds.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical investigation was made of the performance of isolated ram-jet engines in the flight Mach number range from 3 to 7 for two types of diffuser, a high-efficiency diffuser, and a normal-shock diffuser. The fuel was assumed to be a hydrocarbon similar to gasoline. The conclusions reached are: (1) a design altitude of about 100,000 feet is desirable for a high-efficiency high Mach number ram jet on the basis of engine construction and performance; and (2) although greater thrust could be obtained with other fuels, gasoline provides sufficient energy release for maximum engine efficiency in the flight Mach number range investigated. The maximum engine efficiency calculated was 0.47, which occurred at a Mach number of 5. At a Mach number of 7, the maximum propulsive-thrust coefficient was 0.57.

Book Synopsis Method for Calculation of Ram-jet Performance by : John R. Henry
Download or read book Method for Calculation of Ram-jet Performance written by John R. Henry and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method utilizing precalculated solutions graphically presented for calculating subsonic and supersonic ram-jet thrust coefficients and other important quantities is presented with the associated equations and graphs. Using the assumption of constant values of specific-heat ratio and gas constant equal to those of standard air, the thrust-coefficient calculation has been reduced to a few simple operations. Correction methods are presented to account for variations in specific-heat ratio and gas constant. The correction to the thrust coefficient for a typical set of operating conditions may be of the order of 5 to 10 percent.
Book Synopsis A Method for Performance Analysis of a Ramjet Engine in a Free-jet Test Facility and Analysis of Performance Uncertainty Contributors by : Kevin Raymond Holst

This book was released on 2012 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramjet and scramjet engines are being developed to provide a more fuel efficient means of propulsion at high Mach numbers. Part of the development of these engines involves test and evaluation of an engine in ground facilities as well as in flight. Ground facilities, like Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) and those at engine manufacturers like General Electric (GE) and Pratt & Whitney (PW), have decades of experience testing traditional turbine engines and much less experience testing full scale ramjet engines. Testing a supersonic engine in a free-jet mode presents a host of challenges not experienced during traditional direct connect turbine engine tests. Characterizing the performance of an engine in a free-jet test facility is a difficult task due in part to the difficulty in determining how much air the engine is ingesting and the spillage, friction and base drag of the engine installation. As more exotic propulsion systems like DARPA's Falcon Combined Cycle Engine Test (FaCET) article or NASA's X-43 are developed, there is a greater need for effective ground tests to determine engine performance and operability prior to flight testing. This thesis proposes a method for calculating three key performance parameters (airflow, fuel flow, and thrust) and investigates the uncertainty influences for these calculations. A data reduction method was developed for this thesis to calculate the engine airflow, net thrust, and specific impulse (ISP) in a ground test of a generic ramjet engine in a free-jet test facility. It considered typical measurements for an engine test (pressures, temperatures, fuel flow, scale force, and engine and cowl geometry). Once the code was developed, an uncertainty analysis of the calculations was conducted, starting with a simplified analytical assessment. A common industry accepted uncertainty approach was then used in conjunction with the data reduction code to determine the sensitivity or influence coefficients of the independent measurements on the dependent parameters by the dithering method. These influence coefficients were used to ascertain where measurement improvements could be made to affect the greatest reduction in uncertainty of the predicted engine performance.
