Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a series of new case studies, some by young scholars, others by widely published authors. All are based on original research and designed to enhance our understanding of the process of the abolition of slavery in Africa at the grass-roots level. Part of the studies are on new areas of interest such as the German colonies and the Algerian Sahara. Others throw new light on questions already debated, such as emancipation of the Gold Coast. Some focus on the impact of abolition on particular groups of slaves, such as the royal slaves in Nigeria and concubines in Morocco. Among the themes considered is the role of slaves in their own emancipation, the short and long-term results of abolition, the role of the League of Nations, and the vestiges of slavery in Africa today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of royal slavery in the Sokoto Caliphate of what is now Nigeria. Shaped by the broader literature on Islam and slavery in Africa, Stilwell's study seeks to understand the historical relationship between Islam, Islamic politics, and the use of slaves in Kano-a major city in the Caliphate. By doing this, Stilwell opens a new comparative dimension in African social history. This work integrates the history of the most important state of 19th-century Islamic Africa with the broader Islamic world. Based on highly original research, as well as extensive interviews of the descendants of slaves in Kano, this book marks a significant contribution to the literature on Islam, comparative slavery, and African history. Stilwell outlines how and why slaves acquired political power. He argues that, in this African context, slavery and power were not mutually exclusive. Contesting Claude Meillassoux's argument that slaves were by definition socially isolated and kinless "outsiders," Stilwell shows how slaves constructed family networks and took advantage of court politics to contest the terms of their subjugation. In this process, royal slaves aimed not for absolute western-style "freedom," but fought to gain access to, and in some cases redefine, the political and social system of the dominant, aristocratic culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscapes, Sources and Intellectual Projects of the West African Past offers a comprehensive assessment of new directions in the historiography of West Africa. With twenty-four chapters by leading researchers in the study of West African history and cultures, the volume examines the main trends in multiple fields including the critical interpretation of Arabic sources; new archaeological surveys of trans-Saharan trade; the discovery of sources in Latin America relating to pan-Atlantic histories; and the continuing analysis of oral histories. The volume is dedicated to Paulo Fernando de Moraes Farias, whose work inspired the intellectual reorientations discussed in its chapters and stands as the clearest formulation of the book’s central focus on the relationship between political conjunctures and the production of sources. Contributors are: Benjamin Acloque, Karin Barber, Seydou Camara, Mamadou Diawara, Paulo Fernando de Moraes Farias, François-Xavier Fauvelle, Nikolas Gestrich, Toby Green, Bruce Hall, Jan Jansen, Shamil Jeppie, Daouda Keita, Murray Last, Robin Law, Camille Lefebvre, Paul Lovejoy, Ghislaine Lydon, Carlos Magnavita, Sonja Magnavita, Kevin MacDonald, Thomas McCaskie, Ann McDougall, Daniela Moreau, Mauro Nobili, Insa Nolte, Abel-Wedoud Ould-Cheikh, Benedetta Rossi, Charles Stewart.
