Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sulphuric Acid Handbook As sulphuric acid is one of the most important of chemicals, being an intermediate raw product, essential in most manufacturing processes, I think the appearance of this handbook dealing solely with sulphuric acid is well justified. In fact, in almost every industry some sulphuric acid is used and it has been asserted that the consumption of sulphuric acid by any nation is a measure of its degree of industrial progress. This is certainly not strictly correct, but sulphuric acid forms the starting point of, and is used in so many industries that there is considerable element of truth in this statement. A few examples showing some of its important uses follows: (a) For decomposing salts with the production of nitric acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium sulphate, thus indirectly in the manufacture of soda ash, soap, glass, bleaching powder, etc. (b) For the purification of most kinds of oil, including petroleum and tar oils. (c) For pickling (i.e., cleaning) iron goods previous to tinning or galvanizing. (d) As a drying agent in the production of organic dyes, on which the textile industry depends to a large extent. (e) For rendering soluble mineral and animal phosphate (superphosphate) for manures; thus agriculture absorbs large amounts, and consequently food stuffs are affected by fluctuations in the supply of this important chemical. (f) For the manufacture of nitric acid from Chile saltpetre: nitric acid and sulphuric acid together are used in the nitration of organic substances such as glycerine and cellulose forming nitro-glycerine and nitro-cellulose mainly used in the manufacture of explosives now in great demand. Book excerpt: By some measure the most widely produced chemical in the world today, sulfuric acid has an extraordinary range of modern uses, including phosphate fertilizer production, explosives, glue, wood preservative and lead-acid batteries. An exceptionally corrosive and dangerous acid, production of sulfuric acid requires stringent adherence to environmental regulatory guidance within cost-efficient standards of production. This work provides an experience-based review of how sulfuric acid plants work, how they should be designed and how they should be operated for maximum sulfur capture and minimum environmental impact. Using a combination of practical experience and deep physical analysis, Davenport and King review sulfur manufacturing in the contemporary world where regulatory guidance is becoming ever tighter (and where new processes are being required to meet them), and where water consumption and energy considerations are being brought to bear on sulfuric acid plant operations. This 2e will examine in particular newly developed acid-making processes and new methods of minimizing unwanted sulfur emissions. The target readers are recently graduated science and engineering students who are entering the chemical industry and experienced professionals within chemical plant design companies, chemical plant production companies, sulfuric acid recycling companies and sulfuric acid users. They will use the book to design, control, optimize and operate sulfuric acid plants around the world. - Unique mathematical analysis of sulfuric acid manufacturing processes, providing a sound basis for optimizing sulfuric acid manufacturing processes - Analysis of recently developed sulfuric acid manufacturing techniques suggests advantages and disadvantages of the new processes from the energy and environmental points of view - Analysis of tail gas sulfur capture processes indicates the best way to combine sulfuric acid making and tailgas sulfur-capture processes from the energy and environmental points of view - Draws on industrial connections of the authors through years of hands-on experience in sulfuric acid manufacture

Book excerpt: A valuable reference, Pump User's Handbook: Life Extension explains just how and why the best-of-class pump users are consistently achieving superior run lengths, low maintenance expenditures, and unexcelled safety and reliability. The book conveys, in detail, what must be done to rapidly accomplish best-of-class performance and low life cycle cost. Simply put, the text explains what exactly needs to be done if a facility wants to progress from being a one, two, or three year pump MTBF plant, and wishes to join the leading money-making facilities that today achieve a demonstrated pump MTBF of 8.6 years. Written by two practicing engineers whose combined 80-year working career included all conceivable facets of pumping technology, book provides experience-based details, data, guidance, direction, explanations, and firm recommendations. Implementing what this text explains will allow a plant to move from yesterday's demonstrably unprofitable and costly repair focus to tomorrow's absolutely necessary reliability focus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Sulphuric Acid Practice During a period of several years in close contact with the manufacture of Sulphuric Acid the writers have a great many times been asked to recommend some published work upon the subject from which a knowledge of the practical essentials of modern American acid making could be obtained. This inquiry has come from men working in association with, and under the supervision of, the writers, and also from men in allied lines who wished to acquaint themselves quickly with this information. So far as the writers know, such a work in English does not exist. Lunge's Sulphuric Acid and Alkali is admirable in many ways, and certainly every one permanently connected with the manufacture of acid should have it for reference: it does not, however, cover modern American practice, nor is it suitable to present to a new chamber operator as a source of information. Besides Lunge, there are several books which include a few chapters on sulphuric acid, but none is satisfying. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first version of this book, Packaging Materials and Containers was published in 1967 and was revised extensively ten years later under the title The Packaging Media. Some thirty or so authors were involved in producing the initial texts for these books, and I must acknowledge their material, much of which is still valid. It is now thirteen years since The Packaging Media-high time to take stock and incorporate the considerable advances in materials, forms, techniques and machinery that have taken place. In 1977, wherever possible, we asked the original authors to carry out the revisions, but retirements and job changes have now eliminated over twenty of the original authors. We have therefore appointed an Editorial Board to advise on this more extensive revision, and I wish to thank them for their detailed and helpful assistance: Dr C. J. Mackson and Professor Y. Dagel for general comments and guidance on the overall plan and, in particular, the Introduction (chapter 1); Graham Gordon and Harri Mostyn for assistance with much of Part D on Distribution Packages, and Dennis Hine and Susan Selke for their work in respect of paperboard and plastics retail packaging, respectively. A major contribution was made by the seventh member of the Editorial Board, David Osborne, who advised in the area of glass.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alkali-Makers' Handbook: Tables and Analytical Methods for Manufacturers of Sulphuric Acid, Nitric Acid, Soda, Potash, and Ammonia Most practical Chemists and manufacturers have long felt the want of uniformity in analytical methods, tables of specific gravities, etc., employed by buyers and sellers for the valuation of chemicals, and by manufacturers for controlling and superintending their various pro cesses. Want of uniformity in this respect is constantly leading to disagreements, and prevents exact comparison of results.
