Book excerpt: This report deals with pavement mixture designs and construction operation of field trials on U.S. 69 north of Lufkin, Texas. The binders used in this field trial consisted of pure asphalt cement for the control sections and 30/70 weight percent of a sulphur/asphalt emulsion as the test binder. All elements of the structural (thickness) design were produced in pairs for comparison purposes with the exception of two thinner sections selected to possibly show distress in two or three years. Otherwise, the thickness designs used in the test sections were those specified by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in the conventional section of this highway. Preconstruction laboratory evaluations of mixture properties and field laboratory control measurements are included as a part of this report.

Book excerpt: This report documents the design, placement, and collection of initial data from a sulfur-extended-asphalt (SEA) pavement and a conventional pavement used as a control. The SEA pavement used 30-percent sulfur by total weight of the binder. Both pavements were placed under New York State specifications during the summer of 1980 on Rtes 118 and 202 adjoining the Amawalk Reservoir in Westchester County. Mix temperatures, hot-bin gradations, and toxic emissions were monitored at the plant and the site throughout placement. Aggregates were collected from the hot bin during production of the control and SEA mixes for use in a Marshall mix design. Cores were extracted from both SEA and control pavements 1 month after placement for laboratory testing. Pavement surface properties were also examined after 1 month of service. A Marshall mix design based on hot-bin aggregate gradations was prepared for both the control and SEA mixes after the fact, and it was found that both had been placed at a binder content less than optimum.

Book excerpt: In 1987 the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) completed a field study to compare the performance of sulfur-extended asphalt (SEA) pavements to conventional asphalt control (AC) pavements. A representative set of pavements was chosen to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of sulfur on pavement performance. The primary conclusion was that there was no difference in overall performance between the SEA and AC sections. The field study is documented in FHWA Report DP54-01, FHWA, Washington, D.C., 1987. It is entitled "Performance Evaluation of Sulfur-Extended Asphalt Pavements - Field Survey and Assessment." The laboratory study documented in this current study complements the field study. Cores were obtained from many of the pavements and tested (1) to verify that the SEA and AC sections were similar in thickness and mixture composition, except for sulfur content, (2) to predict whether the pavement performances of the SEA and AC sections will remain similar, and (3) to investigate individual pavements where the performances of the two sections were not equal. In general, the laboratory test results supported the results of the field study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 4,070 tons of sulfur-extended-asphalt (SEA) pavement was placed on Maine roads during the 1979 construction season. The SEA mix tot& includes 3,300 tons placed on the Interstate and 770 tons placed on a primary highway. The mix was produced in an 8,000 pound batch plant. A 30/70 (15/85) weight blend of sulfur and asphalt was used as the binding agent. The sulfur modified asphalt was mixed by the "Direct Method" by adding the two materials, asphalt first, one after the other into the mix plant asphalt weigh bucket. The SEA Mix was designed by the Hveem procedures by State technicians in the Bituminous Concrete Laboratory in Bangor. Quality assurance of the finished product was determined by State of Maine inspectors at the plant and on the street. After construction, tests were conducted on the SEA Mix to determine the physical properties of the recovered asphalt for a before and after comparison of the modified binding agent. Frictional resistance, deflection and rideability measurements were obtained on both the SEA and the control sections. These parameters produced similar results for both sections. The SEA binder concept used on the experimental project reduced the required asphalt cement by nearly 20 percent. Laboratory tests indicated that sulfur negated the oxidation of the asphalt cement during the plant mix cycle.
