Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
Book Synopsis Performance of Chevron-Notch Short Bar Specimen in Determining the Fracture Toughness of Silicon Nitride and Aluminum Oxide by : D. Munz
Download or read book Performance of Chevron-Notch Short Bar Specimen in Determining the Fracture Toughness of Silicon Nitride and Aluminum Oxide written by D. Munz and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ease of preparation and testing are advantages unique to the chevron-notch specimen used for the determination of the plane strain fracture toughness of extremely brittle materials. During testing, a crack develops at the notch tip and extends stably as the load is increased. For a given specimen and notch configuration, maximum load always occurs at the same relative crack length independent of the material. Fracture toughness is determined from the maximum load with no need for crack length measurement. Chevron notch acuity is relatively unimportant since a crack is produced during specimen loading. In this paper, the authors use their previously determined stress intensity factor relationship for the chevron-notch short bar specimen to examine the performance of that specimen in determining the plane strain fracture toughness of silicon nitride and aluminum oxide.
Book Synopsis New Formulae for Determining Fracture Toughness of a Wide Range of Different Materials with Chevron-Notched Short-Rod and Short-Bar Specimens by : XC. Yin

Yin and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New formulae are presented to re-evaluate plain strain fracture toughness of brittle and ductile materials from previous works on chevron-notched specimens. The fracture toughness KIm from the new formulae agree with values of KIC from ASTM specimens. The KIm measurements are successful in tests of tough aluminum when the fracture toughness exceeds 40 MPa . m1 2 and steel 20G with the plasticity factor p approach 1. It is found that the valid specimen size could be smaller than 1.25(KIC/?S)2 for aluminum alloys, and even less than 0.1(KIC/?S) for steel 20G when the KIm formulae are used.

Book Synopsis Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small- Size Chevron-Notched Specimens by : Yevgeny Deryugin
Download or read book Determination of Fracture Toughness Characteristics of Small- Size Chevron-Notched Specimens written by Yevgeny Deryugin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new method is proposed to determine fracture toughness of structural materials according to the test data of non-standard small-size chevron-notched specimens. During the tests, loading diagrams and photographic images of the specimens taken in time intervals are obtained. The crack length is measured in the process of its initiation and propagation. The analytical expressions are obtained being based and derived from the constitutive equations of engineering fracture mechanics to determine the crack-driving force (specific fracture energy) and the stress intensity factor. The method allows us to exclude the periodic unloading of the specimen applied under standard test conditions to determine the change in specimen compliance, which is taken into account in constitutive equations at crack length increase. All necessary calculation parameters are determined according to the experimental data. The method allows us to certify fracture toughness of the material without restrictions regarding the amount of plastic deformation and in front of the crack tip and in the specimen as a whole. The examples are given to calculate the fracture toughness criteria for a number of structural materials characterized by the ability to plastic deformation and by the Young's modulus value.
Book Synopsis An Investigation on the Method for Determination of Fracture Toughness KIc of Metallic Materials with Chevron-Notched Short-Rod and Short-Bar Specimens by : W. Chizhi

Chizhi and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By means of an expression proposed by the authors, dimensionless critical crack lengths and stress-intensity factor coefficients for chevron-notched short-rod specimens were calculated based on the straight-through crack assumption. Calculation was also done for chevron-notched short-bar specimens in an extended range including short bar with rectangular cross section. Three configurations of chevron-notched specimens were used to test fracture toughness KIc for eight metallic materials. Some results were compared with values from standard compact tension and three-point bend specimens. Good agreement was obtained when both stable crack extension and a very small plasticity factor were achieved. The role of load-displacement plot is emphasized. A discussion about some specimen parameters such as dimensionless initial crack length and width to half height (or width to radius) ratio is given.

The fracture toughness specimens were chevron-notch, short-bar specimens for which B was 12.7 mm and W was 25.4 mm. Tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM Test Method for Plane-Strain (Chevron Notch) Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 1304-89).
Book Synopsis A Procedure for Fracture Toughness Testing Using a Chevron-Notched Crack-Arrest Specimen by : RJ. Bonenberger
Download or read book A Procedure for Fracture Toughness Testing Using a Chevron-Notched Crack-Arrest Specimen written by RJ. Bonenberger and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new chevron-notched crack-arrest (CNCA) specimen has been developed for determining the fracture toughness of metals in a more cost-effective manner. The specimen is a hybrid design that incorporates features from the standard KIc and KIc specimens. Details of the specimen geometry and associated test procedures are described. Strain gages record the stress state in the specimen, and a clip gage measures the crack mouth opening displacement. The method for extracting arrest and initiation toughness from the measured data is presented. Fracture experiments using the CNCA specimen ware conducted to determine Ka and Kc for A533-B reactor grade steel at 23°C. The Ka and Kc results from this study were consistent with similar data established for the same material by other-researchers. A fractographic analysis identified cleavage as the dominant failure mode during crack propagation, with a conversion to ductile tearing just before arrest.
Book Synopsis Short Bar Chevron-Notch Fracture Toughness of Bone Cement by : SK. Bhambri
Download or read book Short Bar Chevron-Notch Fracture Toughness of Bone Cement written by SK. Bhambri and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poly(methylmethacrylate) is used as a grouting agent in total joint arthroplasty. Fracture toughness of the relatively brittle bone cement is an important property determining the reliability and defect tolerance capability of the material. In the present study, fracture toughness of bone cement and commercial PMMA has been determined using a short bar chevron-notch test method. Chevron-notched short bar specimens were prepared with a notch molded-in during the polymerization process or by machining techniques. Specimen size and other test parameters were varied to determine variability of the results. In addition, parameters were also varied to simulate clinical practices.

Book excerpt: There is increasing interest in the use of chevron-notched specimens for the measurement of plane-strain fracture toughness. Attention has been focussed on the short rod/bar specimens, for which several different geometries have been proposed. This paper describes a series of tests on 6061-T651 aluminum alloy aimed at providing a comparison of five short rod/bar specimen types with three different thicknesses. Also included are data from standard compact-tension specimens.
Book Synopsis ASTM E 1304, The New Standard Test for Plane-Strain (Chevron-Notched) Fracture Toughness by : LM. Barker
Download or read book ASTM E 1304, The New Standard Test for Plane-Strain (Chevron-Notched) Fracture Toughness written by LM. Barker and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins and rationale for the three plane-strain fracture toughnesses defined by the new ASTM Test Method for Plane-Strain (Chevron-Notch) Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 1304-89) are reviewed. KIvM represents the toughness measured in a greatly simplified test, but it can be less accurate than KIv and KIvj. The test for KIv is complete with all the procedures and validity criteria necessary to assure accurate measurements of plane-strain critical stress-intensity factors. When a material exhibits a crack-jump behavior, the KIv procedure must be modified, and the toughness is called KIvj. This paper suggests that ASTM E 1304-89 toughness measurements can be used for the full range of applications appropriate to KIc values measured by the ASTM Test Method for Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399-83). However, a material-dependent constant, equal to about three times the ctack-tip plastic zone radius, should be added to the preexisting flaw size in calculations of crack stability.
