Nursing students need to have the competencies necessary to screen for suicidal ideation and manage at-risk individuals. The aim of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to develop an intervention to improve suicide prevention competencies among baccalaureate nursing students. Empirical support was found in the literature for a two-pronged approach, including the implementation of an educational program on suicide prevention that incorporated a validated and reliable suicide risk screening tool, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-9. A PowerPoint presentation on foundational suicide prevention concepts served as the intervention. Benner's From Novice to Expert theory provided the theoretical structure for the project. The ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation formed the organizational fabric from planning through evaluation. The project outcomes were evaluated by pre- and post-analysis of a 12-item test and a simulation skills checklist administered during each of two standardized patient simulations. The aggregate post-test mean scores improved by 24.3% and the second simulation checklist had an aggregate mean score gain of 67.6%, exceeding 20%, the established benchmark for improvement. This project allowed nursing students to practice the screening and management of a suicidal individual in a less stressful, but realistic simulated clinical environment. The project's results support this was an effective strategy to improve nursing students' suicide prevention competencies. Sustainment of this project will be essential to enhance the suicide prevention knowledge and skills of future nursing students. This project can be adapted to suit other levels of nursing students and practicing nurses in the future.
