Book excerpt: To the person about to read my book, thank you for allowing me to talk to you. If you don’t know me, hi, my name is Arrow. Throughout this book, you’ll come to learn a lot more about me than just my name as this book is filled with some of my most vulnerable thoughts, emotions, and stories. As a teen author, I’m still learning and finding my style in writing my books, but one thing is still the same . . . The goal behind my books is to not only give some inside perspective on mental health for people to gain a better understanding but also let people know they’re not alone. Struggling with mental health can feel beyond isolating like nobody cares. I’m only one person, but I need you to know that you have at least one person that cares about you, even if I don’t know you. To me, you’re not just a reader of this book but someone whom I have yet to form or expand a connection with. I’ve been told I need to “have some class” and, my favorite (not at all; it pisses me off), “put a smile on your face.” I’m not good at being fake, and why should I have to be? Being human is all about forming a connection whether that’s to people, the world, or yourself. Whatever connection that may be, how can you form that if you aren’t you? You feel me? Throughout this book, I hope that not only am I able to make a connection with you but also for you to find a deeper connection to yourself. Having a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you I feel makes life a little less lonely. I hope this book is able to help you in whatever way you need it to. At the end of the day, we’re only human. I think it’s time that we as human beings start acting like it instead of putting on this fake persona that everything is perfect when, in all reality, it’s the complete opposite; nothing is perfect. I think that’s what makes life beautiful though, how you choose to see things. Anything can be beautiful or perfect; it’s all on how you choose to view it.

Book excerpt: Evil Readers, as ye partake of Encyclopaedia of Hell, rejoice! The hateful sequel written by Satan has arrived! After Hell’s army conquers Insignificant Earth and devours the human race in a celebratory feast, Lord Satan reveals that he will now journey deep into the universe to find the throne of the despised Creator. There Satan will depose God and take his rightful place as Emperor of Existence. However, hellish complications quickly arise: exposed to the rays of the Celestial Sun, Satan’s horns and claws become brittle and his undercarriage breaks out in a rash. And a hypnotic, ghostly nun named Debbie seduces the naïve King of Hate into taking a wrong turn. Now Lord Satan must face Oblivion when he enters Heaven’s labyrinthine Library, from which there is no escape. But when the Armies of Hell arrive to find Lord Satan and conquer Heaven, instead they find a disturbing secret at the core of Creation too shocking for even a demon to stomach. Martin Olson’s savage wit provides the firepower for a preposterous literary feat unaccomplished since Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce passed—channeling the real voice of Satan. As a satirist, Olson has inflicted numerous comedy series on the populace via HBO, CBS, Showtime, Comedy Central, Disney, and FX.

Inspired by the examples of first generation African poets like Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, Dennis Brutus, and Mazisi Kunene, the poets in this anthology display rootedness in, and preoccupation with, the discourses of identity and political freedom. At the same time, they engage the more contemporary themes of human and economic rights, governance, the natural environment, love, family and generational relations representative of the African continent. Poems from Tanure Ojaide, Yewande Omotoso, Reesom Haile and Frank Chipasula are inlcluded and in all there are contributions from 68 poets.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a close study of four novels by Boris Vian. It aims to show how L'Écume des jours, L'Automne à Pékin, L'Herbe rouge and L'Arrache-coeur form a unified and coherent tetralogy. By establishing close links between these four texts, it becomes possible to achieve a more comprehensive understanding, not only of the significance of the tetralogy in exposing a complex and multi-layered novelistic strategy at the heart of the vianesque, but of the individual novels as autonomous creations. An examination of the novels reveals that they are not merely joined to one another via a superficial network of textual similarities (that which I refer to as intratextuality), but that this intertwining is emblematic of a common method of narrative construction. Each Vian novel is dependent, for a thorough understanding of the text to be possible, upon the multiple lines of external influence running through it. The sources of this influence (which I refer to as intertextuality) are located in various major texts of twentieth century literature, anglophone as well as francophone. Thus, in each instance the narrative is driven by a complicated interaction of intratextuality and intertextuality.

Book excerpt: “Pushes urban fantasy noir to its logical extreme by casting the resurrected body of Christ—now called Cross—as an angel-slaying, wise-cracking antihero.” —Publishers Weekly For thousands of years, Cross has wandered the earth, a mortal soul trapped in the undying body left behind by Christ. He’s been a thief, a con man, a soldier, and a drunkard. He’s fought as a slave in the Colosseum and as a knight at King Arthur’s side. But now he must play the part of reluctant hero, as an angel comes to him for help finding the Mona Lisa—the real Mona Lisa that inspired the painting. Cross’s quest takes him into a secret world within our own, populated by characters just as strange and wondrous as he is. Haunted by memories of Penelope—the only woman he truly loved—he wants to avenge her death at the hands of his ancient enemy, Judas, a forgotten god from an ancient time. The angel promises to deliver Judas to Cross, but nothing is ever what it seems when Judas is involved, and when a group of renegade angels looking for a new holy war show up, things truly go to hell. “A deliriously unhinged roller coaster of a novel, blending fantasy, history, horror and humour with the aplomb of an overfull blender, but all of it smarter than it, truly, has any right—or need—to be.” —National Post “Sweeps you up with its gallows humour, whether you’re revelling in the pleasures of two-fisted, angel-punching action or the cleverly rendered language.” —Quill & Quire “Takes urban fantasy to a different level with this tale of conspiracy and confession.” —Library Journal
