Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for the Repression of Crime: Contained in Charges Delivered to Grand Juries of Birmingham; Supported by Additional Facts and Arguments; Together With Articles From Reviews and Newspapers Controverting or Advocating the Conclusions of the Author Judging, perhaps, too hastily, from the public attention directed towards many of these Charges on their delivery, my friends have decided that they ought to be published, in a form likely to obtain a place for them among works consulted by the student of the various interesting branches of knowledge, which - using the term in a wide sense - may be classed under the head of Criminal Jurisprudence. As the limits of a Charge necessarily exclude very much that a reader engaged in the investigation of the subject might desire to have before him; and as uninterrupted argument becomes wearisome, I have separated the Charges from each other by matter which, I trust, will furnish a variety both useful and acceptable. The views which I have from time to time submitted to my countrymen, though rarely original, have nevertheless had the fortune to provoke controversies in the Press, of a nature to show that the questions thereby raised had then for the first time earnestly occupied the public mind. Consequently, they were sifted with greater zeal, and by a greater number of writers, than had ever before been employed upon them. And, in order that the reader may not lose the benefit to be derived from considering the subject under a multiplicity of aspects, I have presented to him, in rapid succession, the conflicting opinions set forth in the journals and other periodical works, which have done me the honour to notice my labours - whether for approval or for censure. Book excerpt: Drawing on sources in a dozen states and focusing on seven case studies, documents how the prison reform movement that began in 1876 quickly reverted to the previous standards of punishment, psychological and physical abuse, escapes, riots, suicide, drugs, arson, and rape. Argues that today's prisons, directly descended from those, still lay claim to the ideology of education and rehabilitation that was a myth from the beginning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crime and Its Repression At the National Conference of Criminal Law and Criminology, held in Chicago, at Northwestern University, in June, 1909, the American Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology was organized; and, as a part of its work, the following resolution was passed: "Whereas, it is exceedingly desirable that important treatises on criminology in foreign languages be made readily accessible in the English language, Resolved, that the president appoint a committee of five with power to select such treatises as in their judgment should be translated, and to arrange for their publication." The Committee appointed under this Resolution has made careful investigation of the literature of the subject, and has consulted by frequent correspondence. It has selected several works from among the mass of material. It has arranged with publisher, with authors, and with translators, for the immediate undertaking and rapid progress of the task. It realizes the necessity of educating the professions and the public by the wide diffusion of information on this subject. It desires here to explain the considerations which have moved it in seeking to select the treatises best adapted to the purpose. For the community at large, it is important to recognize that criminal science is a larger thing than criminal law. The legal profession in particular has a duty to familiarize itself with the principles of that science, as the sole means for intelligent and systematic improvement of the criminal law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive Justice in an Age of Repression provides a much-needed engagement with questions of justice and reform within the current phase of global capitalism, one that is marked not only by significant social inequality, but also political bifurcation. It offers guidance on progressive strategies for resistance. It also extends criminological analysis by situating these contemporary challenges as globalized and inextricably linked to questions of political economy, law, and society. Bringing together an international selection of scholars, this book draws on a range of issues, such as immigration, street crime and the renewed push for "law and order," violence against women, environmental injustice, assaults on health care and social services, and the unleashing of private corporate exploitation of natural resources. It is a clarion for strategic thinking, a call for action fuelled by informed analysis, and a reimagining of the progressive society that is under attack by Trumpism, populism, and a rising right. This is an important read for those who teach and study criminology, deviance and social control, social problems, legal studies, political science, and policy studies. It is also a useful resource for practitioners, community-based activists, and policy makers seeking new ways of thinking critically about crime, law, and social control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State Crime and Civil Activism explores the work of non-government organisations (NGOs) challenging state violence and corruption in six countries – Colombia, Tunisia, Kenya, Turkey, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. It discusses the motives and methods of activists, and how they document and criticise wrongdoing by governments. It documents the dialectical process by which repression stimulates and shapes the forces of resistance against it. Drawing on over 350 interviews with activists, this book discusses their motives; the tactics they use to withstand and challenge repression; and the legal and other norms they draw upon to challenge the state, including various forms of law and religious teaching. It analyses the relation between political activism and charitable work, and the often ambivalent views of civil society organisations towards violence. It highlights struggles over land as one of the key areas of state and corporate crime and civil resistance. The interviews illustrate and enrich the theoretical premise that civil society plays a vital part in defining, documenting and denouncing state crime. They show the diverse and vibrant forms that civil society takes in a widely varied group of countries. This book will be of much interest to undergraduate and postgraduate social science students studying criminology, international relations, political science, anthropology and development studies. It will also be of interest to human rights defenders, NGOs and civil society.

This book was released on 1981-12-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a study of the police and criminal justice in eighteenth-century France, and of the crimes and disorders the authorities had to contain. It is concerned with two provinces - the Auvergne, in the mountainous centre, and the Guyenne, the hinterland of Bordeaux and is based on extensive archival research in administrative records, police reports and the transcripts of trials. Part one examines the means of repression available to the government: the national police force, the maréchaussée, and the police court of summary justice, the prévôté. It looks at the recruitment and discipline of policemen, their duties, methods of operating and efficiency; it also examines the treatment of beggars and vagabonds, the procedures of criminal justice, the evidence put before the judges and the punishments handed down. Part two studies the thefts, assaults, murders, riots and rebellions of the two provinces, particularly in the light of fashionable hypotheses about changing patterns of criminal behaviour.
