This book was released on 2003 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sequel to the author's Cuneiform Texts from the Ur III Period in the Oriental Institute, Volume 1: Drehem Administrative Documents from the Reign of Aulgi (OIP 115), this volume is the editio princeps of the 605 cuneiform tablets in the Asiatic Collection of the Oriental Institute Museum that were found at the site of the ancient administrative center Puzria-Dagan (modern tall Yad-duraihim, Drehem) and date to the reign of Amar-Suena (2046-2038 b.c.), the third ruler of the Third Dynasty of Ur (2112-2004 b.c.). Presented in a systematic arrangement that is based on both date and contents, these administrative documents may be considered indispensable primary sources for the study of the socio-economic, political, and religious history during the reign of Amar-Suena. The volume features an annotated typology of Drehem administrative records from the reign of Amar-Suena, detailed philological commentaries on individual texts and text groups, transliterations of all documents, a complete glossary, extensive analytical charts, as well as illustrations (hand copies, photographs) of selected cuneiform tablets. The sealing practice as attested on the sealed objects within this corpus is analyzed in an appendix by Clemens D. Reichel.

Book Synopsis Cursed Are You! by : Anne Marie Kitz
Download or read book Cursed Are You! written by Anne Marie Kitz and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about curses. It is not about curses as insults or offensive language but curses as petitions to the divine world to render judgment and execute harm on identified, hostile forces. In the ancient world, curses functioned in a way markedly different from our own, and it is into the world of the ancient Near East that we must go in order to appreciate the scope of their influence. For the ancient Near Easterners, curses had authentic meaning. Curses were part of their life and religion. They were not inherently magic or features of superstitions, nor were they mere curiosities or trifling antidotes. They were real and effective. They were employed proactively and reactively to manage life’s many vicissitudes and maintain social harmony. They were principally protective, but they were also the cause of misfortune, illness, depression, and anything else that undermined a comfortable, well-balanced life. Every member of society used them, from slave to king, from young to old, from men and women to the deities themselves. They crossed cultural lines and required little or no explanation, for curses were the source of great evil. In other words, curses were universal. Because curses were woven into the very fabric of every known ancient Near Eastern society, they emerge frequently and in a wide variety of venues. They appear on public and private display objects, on tomb stelae, tomb lintels, and sarcophagi, on ancient kudurrus and narûs. They are used in political, administrative, social, religious, and familial contexts. They are the subject of incantations. They are tools that exorcise demons and dispel disease; they ban, protect, and heal. This is the phenomenology of cursing in the ancient Near East, and this is what the present work explores.

Book Synopsis Visible Dissent by : Teresa V. Longo
Download or read book Visible Dissent written by Teresa V. Longo and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Teresa Longo’s groundbreaking examination reveals, North America’s dissident literature has its roots in the Latin American literary tradition. From Pablo Neruda’s Canto General to Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America to Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude—among others—contemporary writers throughout the Americas have forced us to reconsider the United States’s relationship with Latin America, and more broadly with the Global South. Highlighting the importance of reading and re-reading the Latin American canon in the United States, Longo finds that literature can be an instrument of progressive social change, and argues that small literary presses—City Lights, Curbstone, and Seven Stories—have made that dissent visible in the United States. In the book’s final two chapters on the Robert F. Kennedy Center’s Speak Truth to Power initiative and the publication of Marc Falkoff’s Poems from Guantánamo, the author turns our attention further outward, probing the role poetry, theater, and photography play in global human rights work. Locating the work of artists and writers alongside that of scholars and legal advocates, Visible Dissent not only unveils the staying-power of committed writing, it honors the cross-currents and the on-the-ground implications of humane political engagement.

Book excerpt: Music of Latin America and the Caribbean, Second Edition is a comprehensive textbook for undergraduate students, which covers all major facets of Latin American music, finding a balance between important themes and illustrative examples. This book is about enjoying the music itself and provides a lively, challenging discussion complemented by stimulating musical examples couched in an appropriate cultural and historical context—the music is a specific response to the era from which it emerges, evolving from common roots to a wide variety of musical traditions. Music of Latin America and the Caribbean aims to develop an understanding of Latin American civilization and its relation to other cultures. With focused discussions on genres and styles, musical instruments, important rituals, and the composers and performers responsible for its evolution, the author employs a broad view of Latin American music: every country in Latin America and the Caribbean shares a common history, and thus, a similar musical tradition.
Book Synopsis America and the Will of God by : Carlos A. Mojica
Download or read book America and the Will of God written by Carlos A. Mojica and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-08-29 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines an important issue facing America today the increasing influence of evangelical Christians in our Federal government and the erosion in the separation between Church and State. The election of George W. Bush secured a representative for the Christian right who was willing to effect government policies to reflect Christian values on issues such as gay marriage, stem-cell research, abortion, and others. More significantly, the importance of securing this group of voters was not lost on any of the presidential candidates in the upcoming 2008 election. From now on, every candidate will have to publicly express their faith and how it influences their lives and decisions. This book explores several questions posed by this shift in the balance between Church and State: Can we derive a moral code independent of God? Would a strong evangelical influence strengthen our government? Are democratic principles compatible with a theocracy? And more fundamental, does God really exist? How do we know?

Book Synopsis Origins of Cuban Music and Dance by : Benjamin Lapidus
Download or read book Origins of Cuban Music and Dance written by Benjamin Lapidus and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-10-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins of Cuban Music and Dance: Changüí is the first in-depth study of changüí, a style of music and dance in Guantánamo, Cuba. Changüí is analogous to blues in the United States and is a crucible of Cuban Creole culture. Benjamin Lapidus describes changüí and its relationship to the roots of son, Cuba's national genre and the style of music that contributed to the development of salsa, in Eastern Cuba. He also highlights the connections between Afro-Haitian music and Cuban popular music through changüí, connections with the Caribbean that have been largely overlooked in the past. After an initial historical discussion about the region of Guantánamo and the inter-connectedness of its various musical styles with a focus on changüí, Lapidus discusses the technical aspects of the genre as practiced within the region and beyond. He considers the socio-historical importance of its lyrics, presenting numerous musical transcriptions that explain how the music is structured, as well as providing background stories to songs. In a chapter unique to this book and a first in Cuban musicology and ethnography, Lapidus describes years of festivals and musical competitions to show how local musical identity takes shape, particularly when encountering national narratives of music history. The volume concludes with a comparison between changüí and son, as well as a bibliography, discography, and videography.
