Book excerpt: The very funny true story of three children recruited by their parents to work for ASIO in the 1950s. 'Hilarious, moving and brilliantly told' - Susan Johnson 'It reads like the very best of spy thrillers.' - Matthew Condon 'An intimate and compelling look at an ordinary family who happen to be ASIO agents.' - Kristina Olsson Growing up in the 1950s, the three Doherty children were trained by their parents to memorise car number plates, to spot unusual behaviour on the street and, most important of all, to avoid drawing attention to themselves. The children became unwitting foot soldiers in Australia's battle against Soviet infiltration in the Cold War. They attended political rallies, stood watch on houses owned by communist sympathisers, and insinuated themselves into the UFO Society. In 1956 the Doherty family went on a beach holiday with Vladimir and Evdokia Petrov, the famous Soviet defectors, who were hiding from Soviet assassins. Dudley and Joan Doherty swore their children to secrecy, and for decades, they didn't even discuss among themselves the work they did for ASIO. With My Little Eye is a poignant and very funny account of a peculiar childhood in 1950s suburban Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is fiction and could fill several niches in the marketplace. Reluctant readers, those learning English as a second language, trivia buffs, and fans of Beatles spring to mind. This Is as Big as It Gets tells the story of two boys who meet and pair up with two girls. The four of them then banter as they try to put the world to rights while coping with stepparents, sexism, abused parents, sick parents, a plague of rats, death, suicide, and a terrorist attackbut not necessarily in that order. Interspersed with these dramas is an offbeat modern fairy tale told by one of the boys; it is so well received that he decides to write a book. His friends try to help him with ideas, and they get sidetracked by idioms, song lyrics, jokes, palindromes, and trivia. However, the book is never penned, not in this story anyway. The entire text of the story is told using no words longer than four letters because it began life as a teaching exercise for primary school children in Australia. The language is not your average American English, and for that reason, a glossary is attached by way of a translation from the Australian and English idioms and vocabulary that the story is punctuated with. This Is as Big as It Gets will, hopefully, be followed by A Bit of This and a Bit of That and then, to complete the trilogy, Amen to All That. The pattern of using no words longer than four letters in the telling of the story will continue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too many books tell you what you need to do during a round of editing...but they very rarely explain why that need exists. Without explanation and examples to help your understanding, craft basics can feel restrictive and unbearable. You might have already begun writing something you’ve had a great idea for. But a great story requires more than the gift of inspiration. Tell Me A Story takes you through the first steps of what you need to know to write well, and how to improve your editing technique. This book lets you learn with Hows and Whys, through writing examples from real novices. This will allow you to jump into storytelling with solid practices for getting your ideas from your mind to the page. Praise for E.J. Runyon "E.J. has done much more than prove to me that writing is a mosaic skill, worthy of a myriad of effort, but also that it is a sharp-bladed pillow from which we all draw a precise dream." - V. Pittsenbargar “E.J’s done exactly what I wanted and been searching for. Help about storytelling and the English language. Not just as in punctuation and grammar, but about the craft. I wanted to get my readers more engaged in my story. In swoops E.J. to save the day.” - D. Chapman “I'm glad I found E.J., she's a wonderful coach. It's like being a kid getting on a bike for the first time, and realizing what the pedals do. The revisions I'm doing now are helping me tell the story that I want to tell.” - C. Murphy

Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of one woman's transformation from 335 pounds to world-class triathlete in just four years. After being on yo-yo diets almost all her life, Sue Reynolds was still morbidly obese, but decided to try one more time without much hope for positive results. But this time was different. She was fed up with not being able to do things because of her size. She was tired of not being able to tie her own shoes, fit in restaurant booths, or walk more than a few feet. She was ready. The Athlete Inside follows Reynolds's journey as she lost 200 pounds and found an athlete hiding inside her body. From her first walk to the neighbor's mailbox to finishing sixth at the World Triathlon Championship, Reynolds discovered the joy of conquering fear and pride to find that the best version of herself had been there all along. A world-class triathlete and a grandmother, Reynolds is proof that you can transform your life at any age. Her story is one of hope, tenacity, and faith, as she committed to doing whatever it took to be among the best triathletes in the world. It's a story about a unique intergenerational relationship between Reynolds and the young coach who earned her trust and helped her develop fitness and confidence. It's a story about the power of kindness and the spiritual growth Reynolds experienced as she realized the compassion that surrounded her was the face of God. Ultimately, it's the story of how each of us can discover amazing gifts and talents within ourselves.

Book excerpt: Growing up an orphan, author Su Anne Sherry often found herself adrift in life belonging to no one. As Sherry struggled to navigate the sometimes perilous waters of her life without parental guidance, she just wanted to know what it felt like to be loved. In her poignant memoir, Sherry, called Sophie in her childhood, chronicles a lost and lonely little orphan's hunger for affection and her struggle to understand her world as she battled instinctively to hold onto her true self and her sense of humor in the face of institutional indifference, bureaucratic foibles, and human cruelty. Orphaned three months after she was born due to her mother's untimely death and her father's chronic illness, little Sophie began her journey through foster care and subsequently life in an orphanage, where she learned to embrace random acts of kindness, develop her personality, and overcome daily challenges. As she slowly unveils memories from her coming-of-age journey, she illustrates the power of the human spirit to overcome even the greatest of challenges in order to realize true happiness. My Three Lost Girls shares a heartrending, often humorous account of one woman's pilgrimage from an unpredictable beginning in an orphanage to adolescent independence, where she finally discovers what it is like to be loved.

With its contemporary perspective, Twenty-First Century Civil Procedureincludes discussion of modern problems, such as e-discovery and the requirement of careful scrutiny during the certification stage of class suits. Pictures and sidebars provide additional context and pique student interest. A statutory supplement is published annually. New to the Third Edition: New cases—including Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. v. Superior Court of California; Ford Motor Co. v. Montana Eighth Judicial District Court; and Ford Motor Co. v.
