Book excerpt: Sudan is a country located in northeastern Africa, bordered by Egypt to the north, Libya to the northwest, Chad to the west, Central African Republic to the southwest, South Sudan to the south, Ethiopia to the southeast, and the Red Sea to the northeast. The country is home to over 40 million people and is one of the largest in Africa in terms of land area. It is also one of the most diverse countries in terms of languages, cultures, and religions, with Arabic and Islam being predominant in the northern regions, while different African languages and religions are more prevalent in the south. Since its independence from colonial rule, Sudan has experienced widespread violence and instability, including two civil wars that lasted for several decades and resulted in the secession of South Sudan in 2011. Even after the split, Sudan still faces numerous challenges, including economic crisis, political turmoil, ongoing conflicts in Darfur and other regions, and a large number of refugees and internally displaced people. However, the country also has significant resources and potential, including oil reserves, mineral deposits, and a strategic location at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East.

Book excerpt: People scratching a living from parched land, women walking miles for scraps of firewood are both familiar images of Africa. But, in many places, people, with the help of governments and aid agencies, are putting the land into good shape, growing more food and creating a healthy cover of trees. This book joins the literature of hope by looking at these advances from the viewpoint of the energy crisis of the poor. This crisis can only be solved by going beyond the narrow confines of energy to consider all the needs of local people and the potential for change. Drawing on a wide range of case histories, the authors describe the gains in farming and forestry and woodfuel supply that have come about through this broader, people-centered approach. They also write about woodfuel prices, markets and other key elements of survival strategies for the cities. Huge efforts will be needed to recover from the failures of the past, but Leach and Mearns show that important lessons are at last being learned and that new roads to success can be mapped. Book excerpt: Blueprint for a Green Economy put the economics of the environment onto the public agenda. Its authors have now widened the issue by applying the principles of their earlier, ground-breaking work to the tangled issue of sustainable Third World development. They offer a definition of sustainable development in terms of not depleting natural resources and then examine its economic implications. The bulk of the book contains six lively case-studies of major developmental issues, from the watersheds of Java to the drylands of the Sudan; from Amazonia to Africa, all of which show the crucial importance of incorporating the economics of sustainable development into our thinking.

Book excerpt: This open access book presents a picture of the current energy challenges on the African continent (and the Sub-Saharan region in particular) and proposes pathways to an accelerated energy transition. Starting with an analysis of the status quo and the outlook for Africa’s energy demand and energy access, it provides an account of the available resources, including hydrocarbons and renewable energy resources, which are playing an increasingly crucial role. It then moves on to analyze the level of investment required to scale-up Africa’s energy systems, shedding light on the key barriers and elaborating on potential solutions. It also provides a suggestion for improving the effectiveness of EU–Africa cooperation. While mainly intended for policymakers and academics, this book also speaks to a broader audience interested in gaining an overview of the challenges and opportunities of the African energy sector today and in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Sudan, the world's youngest country, has experienced a rocky start to its life as an independent nation. Less than three years after gaining independence in 2011 following a violent liberation war, the country slid back into conflict. In the wake of infighting within the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), violence erupted in South Sudan's capital, Juba, in December 2013. The conflict pitted President Salva Kiir's predominantly Dinka presidential guard against Nuer fighters loyal to the former Vice President Riek Machar. As fighting spread across the country, it has taken on an increasingly ethnic nature. Ceasefires have been agreed, but there have been repeated violations by all sides. Today the conflict continues unabated and the humanitarian situation grows ever more urgent. This book analyses the crisis and some of its contributing factors. The contributors have worked on South Sudan for a number of years and bring a wealth of knowledge and different perspectives to this discussion. Providing the most comprehensive analysis yet of South Sudan's social and political history, post-independence governance systems and the current challenges for development, this book will be essential reading for all those interested in the continuing struggle for peace in South Sudan.
