Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1980's information explosion on new-product development demands a broad-scope, up-to-date review of literature. Calantone and di Benedetto take on the task in this comprehensive annotated bibliography, citing more than 450 articles and books on product innovation and new product development. They have produced a thoroughly integrative review of marketing, business, and engineering literatures, identifying general managerial conclusions. Outlining key issues and problems faced by product managers, Calantone and di Benedetto determine to what extent these issues have been addressed in academic literature. How much of reported research is relevant? What is the quality of available scientific knowledge? Can business managers and marketing staffs learn from other functional areas, i.e. engineering or technical journals? This bibliography is a valuable entry into innovation literature for both product managers and academic researchers. Calantone and di Benedetto's review is structured according to topic area: factors influencing product and process innovation; stages in new-product development; product diffusion forecasting; the R & D-marketing interface; organizational structure; and technology transfer. Each chapter includes a literature review and an extensive annotated bibliography. A representative set of articles from major marketing, business management, operations research, and engineering publications are selected. As a rule of thumb, articles from 1978 to the present are included. Several major works from earlier years are also cited. The authors complete this volume with their own observations and conclusions, an author index, and a subject index.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of a study conducted over the years 1963 to 1967 by the National Planning Association for the National Science Foundation. This project had its origins in the deep and continuing interest of the National Science Foundation in the question of the impact of science and technology on society. The objective was to provide empirical knowledge about the factors which stimulate or advance the application in the civilian economy of scientific and technological findings. As the project developed it took the form of a statistical study of innovations in selected industries, the industries-railroads and railroad suppliers, computer manufacturers and suppliers, and housing suppliers - purposively selected to provide a view of the innovation process in industries with differential involvement in, and dependence on, current technological advances. The results are presented in a manner intended to highlight the differences, or similarities, of the innovative process in the several industries. In. a similar manner, differences and similarities between original innovations--those which are new to the economy as well as the firm--are juxtaposed where relevant with corresponding information for adopted innovations, i.e., innovations new to the firm but not new to the economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts management of product innovation in a corporate strategic perspective and argues that a company's competitive position is strongly related to an underlying unique and continually renewed product innovation work process, which drives innovation and delivery of new or improved products in the marketplace. The book will take the reader through a systematic examination of the necessary consecutive steps for companies' successful development of non-assembled products in the cluster of process industries. For readers in search of a seamless, easy-to-use, effective formal product innovation work process, from customer understanding to product launch, this book provides a guiding framework and "hands-on" advice for work process design. A novel five-phase structural process model of the product innovation work process is initially introduced in order to orchestrate a more dynamic interaction between product and process innovation and the integration of sustainability and product eco-design in product design. The reader will learn first about the importance of aligning new product ideas with the corporate business model and product innovation strategy during the contextualization phase and then how to transform product ideas into well-defined complementary product and process concepts. In the movement of product ideas from the conceptualization phase to industrialization, the use of pilot-planting and production trials for scale-up of product and process concepts is further explored. To secure a design for processability, a novel industrialization sub-process is introduced, and the integration of complementary development of product and service offerings is further examined. The deployment of application development throughout and after product launch is highlighted for an enhancement of product commercialization and a reduction of "time to break even" for new products.

Open Innovation assumes that companies can and should use both internal and external ideas and paths to market, permeating the boundaries between firm and environment. Innovations transfer outward and inward through purchase, licensing, joint ventures, and spin-offs, allowing companies to expand beyond their own research and dramatically improve productivity through collaboration. PDMA Essentials provides practical guidance on exploiting the Open Innovation model to these ends, with clear guidance on all aspects of the new product development process. Topics include: Product platforming and idea competitions Customer immersion and interaction Collaborative product design and development Innovation networks, rewards, and incentives Many practitioners charged with innovation have only a vague understanding of the specific tools available for Open Innovation, and how they might be applied. As the marketplace shifts dramatically to keep pace with changing consumer behaviors, remaining relevant increasingly means ramping up innovation processes. PDMA Essentials provides the tools NPD practitioners need to implement a leading innovation method, and drive continued growth.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 1,7, International University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: The new information age has seen an impressive shift to global markets and cross-border competition, resulting in customers increased expectations for higher quality products, competitive prices and better and faster services. Hence, companies aiming at striving success are focussing more and more on generating fast, innovative, and efficient solutions to satisfy customers’ expectations and to create value for shareholder. In view of that, the quest for new products capable to bestow the company with the differential advantage to position itself against its competitors has never been more critical than ever before. However, although innovations are generally seen as the engine of growth, only a small number survive the first year and generate significant value for shareholders. Thus, managers all around the world are keen to identify key factors of success to reduce uncertainty in the new product development process. Yet, history teaches us that product innovation is a complex and dynamic process whose success is difficult to measure, to forecast and which call for talented managers capable to identify and harmonize an array of exogenous, endogenous and consumer perception factors of success simultaneously. Most notably, consumers perception is difficult to map and far more complex to manage. Only new products and innovations that timely offer superior and unique benefits that are perceived as such by customers are marketable and sustainable in the long run and thus generate value for shareholders.
