Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success With Small Fruits Of all small fruits the Strawberry is probably of the greatest commercial importance in this country, and on the maryland-delaware peninsula the culture has attained an importance second to no other part of the country, since soil and climate favor the production of the finest plants and the most plentiful fruiting. In no section do the plants make better root-systems, and wherever the plants grown here have gone they have made a reputation. There is no plant that so adapts itself to soils of all descriptions as the Straw berry. It is a fruit that can be grown anywhere, in sandy or clayey soils. But certain soils seem to be better adapted to certain varieties than others. While good drainage is essential, there is nothing that the Strawberry delights in more than a moist soil. Of course, it does not want standing water in the soil, but a soil that, while well-drained, has the water table only a few feet down, and in which there is a constant rise of capillary moisture, will always produce the heaviest crop. Late berries, like the Gandy, always do better on soils of this character than on high and dry soils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Small Fruits Lack of time is usually the excuse given by farmers for not growing these fruits. There is no doubt but that this class of fruits requires care and attention, especially when a fancy marketable product is desired. Naturally, some kinds demand more application thanothers. However, many general farmers are obtaining satisfactory results with a comparatively small expenditure of time and effort. If a man can learn just when and how to perform many of the operations necessary in a small fruit patch, greater success will attend his efforts than when more time is spent, but in an unthinking, unsystematic way. The men who are obtaining returns from their berries consider them well worth the necessary care. The culture of the small fruits ls apt to vary in different localities to a greater degree than does that of the tree fruits. It will often be dependent upon special local conditions and upon the grower himself. In this bulletin only a few of the small fruits, the strawberry, rasp berry, blackberry, gooseberry, and currant, are dealt with and no attempt is made to enter into details or to touch upon special condi tions. Some of the fundamentals and a few rules in common use for the growing of these fruits are given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ill-success usually arises from the lack of a little practical knowledge and from neglect - or from leaving the care of the plants to the hired man who may have an antipathy to everything save cabbages and potatoes. But a fraction of the money that supplies a household from the market with fruit that is often but half ripe or half decayed, would stock the garden with the choicest varieties. Besides, the most delicate and luscious kinds are the most easily grown usually. But they are not often found in market because too soft for transportation. They may be picked from our own gardens daily with the dew upon them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success With Small Fruits A Book should be judged somewhat in view of what it attempts. One of the chief objects of this little volume is to lure men and women back to their original calling, that of gardening. I am decidedly under the impression that Eve helped Adam, especially as the sun declined. I am sure that they had small fruits for breakfast, dinner and supper, and would not be at all surprised if they ate some between meals. Even we poor mortals who have sinned more than once, and must give our minds to the effort not to appear unnatural in many hideous styles of dress, can fare as well. The Adams and Eves of every generation can have an Eden if they wish. Indeed, I know of many instances in which Eve creates a beautiful and fruitful garden without any help from Adam. The theologians show that we have inherited much evil from our first parents, but, in the general disposition to have a garden, can we not recognize a redeeming ancestral trait? I would like to contribute my little share toward increasing this tendency, believing that as humanity goes back to its first occupation it may also acquire some of the primal gardener's characteristics before he listened to temptation and ceased to be even a gentleman. When he brutally blamed the woman, it was time he was turned out of Eden. All the best things of the garden suggest refinement and courtesy. Nature might have contented herself with producing seeds only, but she accompanies the prosaic action with fragrant flowers and delicious fruit. It would be well to remember this in the ordinary courtesies of life. Moreover, since the fruit-garden and farm do not develop in a straight-forward, matter-of-fact way, why should I write about them after the formal and terse fashion of a manual or scientific treatise? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Small Fruits: Their Propagation and Cultivation, Including the Grape A new departure was made in 1806, by one Michael Keen, a celebrated English gardener, who introduced the Imperial, which he grew from seed, and subsequently, from seed of the Imperial, what was long known as Keen's Seedling. This was a wonderful fruit for the time, being large, productive, and of good flavor and habit of growth; but it did not succeed in this country, and was soon supplanted by more hardy sorts. The London Horticultural Society, in 1821, had executed a col ored plate of this strawberry (not a very rare thing now), indi cating its high appreciation of its merits. The success of Keen excited scores of others to attempt the growing of better varieties from seeds, and from that time to the present, seedlings have been numerous. Little was done in this country, except in imitation of English practices, till about 1834, when Mr. C. M. Hovey produced and introduced what has since been known as Hovey's Seedling, a fruit hardly sur passed by the best varieties of the present time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Fruit Culture: A Practical Guide to the Cultivation and Propagation of Fruits During the past ten or fifteen years great progress has been made in the cultivation and care of our hardy fruits and especially in the varieties grown, the methods of packing, shipping and marketing, and during this time few books have been written which have kept up with this progress. This progress and the knowledge of insect and fungous pests and their destruction has been largely recorded in scientific books and papers from the numerous experiment stations, with little from the practical and practicing fruit growers, and there is a growing need of a condensed work giving, in plain language, a summary of the scientific progress made, together with the practice of the most successful fruit growers in various sections of the country. Especially is this information needed that those just starting out in the business of fruit growing, or the village home owner who wishes to grow a small quantity of fruit for family consumption, may find in a condensed form the information necessary for success. It is, therefore, the aim of the author to make a book that is up to date in every particular and to cover the entire practice of fruit growing from the starting of the seed or cutting to the marketing of the fruit, though in many cases works devoted to special fruits may be more complete. It is written from the standpoint of the practical fruit grower who is striving to make his business profitable by growing the best fruit possible and at the least cost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit and Ornamental Trees, 1924 Great developments have been and are still 'being made in the creation of new fruits; and, while many of the new varieties have not maintained their first representations, some have proved even more valuable than was at first anticipated and must be considered as very valuable acquisitions. This is more especially so among the plums and small fruits. But, in examining a catalog, one thing cannot help but be observed; that the old leading sorts still maintain their place at the very head of the list and, therefore, in the revision of this catalog, care has been taken to leave out such varieties as are not considered valu able, and only-such varieties are given place as are now in general cultivation (some of which will succeed well only in certain locations), so that by a judicious selection from the list, a model orchard may be obtained. Jane Grigson is at her literate and entertaining best in this fascinating compendium of recipes for forty-six different fruits. Some, like pears, will probably seem homely and familiar until you've tried them ¾ la chinoise. Others, such as the carambola, described by the author as looking ?like a small banana gone mad,? will no doubt be happy discoveries. ø You will find new ways to use all manner of fruits, alone or in combination with other foods, including meats, fish, and fowl, in all phases of cooking from appetizers to desserts. And, as always, in her brief introductions Grigson will both educate and amuse you with her pithy comments on the histories and varieties of all the included fruits. ø All ingredients are given in American as well as metric measures, and this edition includes an extensive glossary, compiled by Judith Hill, which not only translates unfamiliar terminology but also suggests American equivalents for British and Continental varieties where appropriate.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Fruit Growing in California This circular is designed for those who wish to grow fruit and nuts on a small scale for their own use and not for those who may grow fruit as a business. Although nearly all the fruits that the amateur can hope to produce are already available in our home markets, many of us desire to raise something of our own. As a matter of economics, home fruit grow ing is a poor investment; but happily, no matter how much we may try to convince ourselves to the contrary, we grow home fruits not for mone tary gain but as a labor of love. There is a pride of possession in produc ing some nice fruit, for it can be done; but the work is primarily a sport or recreation. It is the creative instinct that makes us want to dig in the soil and plant something. The fructifying soil holds great mystery for us all. As most people know, growing things out of the earth is a gamble, where skill and chance combine to make a most fascinating game. If we persist until we acquire skill and wisdom; study our plants, treat them properly, protect them from their enemies, we may be rewarded with all the fruit we can use and (best of all) with some to present to our friends, which is the sweetest of all rewards for the amateur. As already mentioned, this publication is intended to help the begin ner. Whereas practically all of our books and experiment-station publi cations on the subject were written for commercial fruit growers, this circular is frankly for the amateur, and all the discussions will be from his standpoint. The professional orchardist is always cautioned, for ex ample, to select a site having the climate, soil, water, and marketing facilities that will promote his financial success. The homeowner, on the other hand, must use the site he has, whether all conditions are fav crable or not. His back yard may be only a second or a third-rate location for fruit, but he wants to use it. Fortunately, practices unjustifiable on a large scale may be followed in a small way: Poor soil can be greatly modified and ameliorated if one will go to the necessary trouble and ex pense. To provide for a few trees only, a swampy spot may be reclaimed, an unfavorable soil or subsoil completely made over. Individual fruits or even whole clusters may be protected against diseases and insects by enclosing them in bags made of paper, gauze, or cellophane. Even the mean temperature for a few trees may be raised considerably in a cold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
