Book excerpt: The energy, commerce, and excitement generated by New York City are unparalleled anywhere else in the world. The suburbs that surround the city are home to many of the movers and shakers that make Manhattan sparkle. These exclusive communities in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey that commuters call home are as special in their exquisite beauty and style as the metropolis itself. This collection of photographs from thirty-four of the most exceptional and unique small towns around New York includes beautifully designed homes - many belonging to celebrities - and pristine landscapes that make them vastly popular tourist destinations. The Old Westbury Gardens estate, the gorgeous beaches and rolling hills of neighborhoods on Long Island Sound, and the historical architecture of Southport, are just a few reasons to visit this unique region yourself. Three states and five million people are represented in this deeply reflective work.

Persons of culture, of whom the more respectable quarter of the world is full, have for a generation or so made a point of Speaking of the suburbans with hushed voices and a certain contempt. Among the superior class the very word suburban nowadays means a great deal more than it was ever intended to mean. Indeed, though, philologically considered, it is quite an innocent word, with but one meaning, the superior mind has latterly contrived to pack into it mean ings enough to start a respectable dictionary. You start with a resume like Dan Kennedy's: • Dressed up as a member of Kiss every Halloween • Memorized Led Zeppelin IV at age ten • Fronted a lip-sync band in junior high • Worked as a college DJ while he was a college drop-out In his outrageous memoir, McSweeney's contributor Kennedy chronicles his misadventures at a major record label. As the agent said, the walk is so beautiful that it really is an additional inducement in the summer time; of course, it's autumn now, but as I told Mr. F astnet, the Winter goes so quickly, it's over almost before you know it. Two distinct, but incomplete personalities are brought together during the fulfillment of a Nostradamus prophecy. The traveller is a man that meets a dream-cast guide while searching coastal Portugal for exotic vineyards. According to this Zen-style teacher he is in search of his incomplete soul. His other 'half' is in France, disillusioned and trying to live out his mid-life crisis as an artist. The two are completely unaware of one another. The artist is circumstantially drawn to England where he meets a gypsy-wicca soul that accompanies him on a pilgramage to Stonehenge, while the traveller banters with the illusive body-changing teacher as he explains the unique state of affairs that needs to be accomodated to bring the souls together and work out karmic debts.

Book excerpt: Since the 1920s, the United States has seen a dramatic reversal in living patterns, with a majority of Americans now residing in suburbs. This mass emigration from cities is one of the most fundamental social and geographical transformations in recent US history. Suburbanization has not only produced a distinct physical environment—it has become a major defining force in the construction of twentieth-century American culture. Employing over 200 primary sources, illustrations, and critical essays, The Suburb Reader documents the rise of North American suburbanization from the 1700s through the present day. Through thematically organized chapters it explores multiple facets of suburbia’s creation and addresses its indelible impact on the shaping of gender and family ideologies, politics, race relations, technology, design, and public policy. Becky Nicolaides’ and Andrew Wiese’s concise commentaries introduce the selections and contextualize the major themes of each chapter. Distinctive in its integration of multiple perspectives on the evolution of the suburban landscape, The Suburb Reader pays particular attention to the long, complex experiences of African Americans, immigrants, and working people in suburbia. Encompassing an impressive breadth of chronology and themes, The Suburb Reader is a landmark collection of the best works on the rise of this modern social phenomenon.

Book excerpt: Suburban space has traditionally been understood as a formless remnant of physical city expansion, without a dynamic or logic of its own. Suburban Urbanities challenges this view by defining the suburb as a temporally evolving feature of urban growth.Anchored in the architectural research discipline of space syntax, this book offers a comprehensive understanding of urban change, touching on the history of the suburb as well as its current development challenges, with a particular focus on suburban centres. Studies of the high street as a centre for social, economic and cultural exchange provide evidence for its critical role in sustaining local centres over time. Contributors from the architecture, urban design, geography, history and anthropology disciplines examine cases spanning Europe and around the Mediterranean.By linking large-scale city mapping, urban design scale expositions of high street activity and local-scale ethnographies, the book underscores the need to consider suburban space on its own terms as a specific and complex field of social practice

Book excerpt: An examination of subversive games like The Sims—games designed for political, aesthetic, and social critique. For many players, games are entertainment, diversion, relaxation, fantasy. But what if certain games were something more than this, providing not only outlets for entertainment but a means for creative expression, instruments for conceptual thinking, or tools for social change? In Critical Play, artist and game designer Mary Flanagan examines alternative games—games that challenge the accepted norms embedded within the gaming industry—and argues that games designed by artists and activists are reshaping everyday game culture. Flanagan provides a lively historical context for critical play through twentieth-century art movements, connecting subversive game design to subversive art: her examples of “playing house” include Dadaist puppet shows and The Sims. She looks at artists’ alternative computer-based games and explores games for change, considering the way activist concerns—including worldwide poverty and AIDS—can be incorporated into game design. Arguing that this kind of conscious practice—which now constitutes the avant-garde of the computer game medium—can inspire new working methods for designers, Flanagan offers a model for designing that will encourage the subversion of popular gaming tropes through new styles of game making, and proposes a theory of alternate game design that focuses on the reworking of contemporary popular game practices.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Suburban Pastoral: And Other Tales In their walks about Southwick it was often agreed between Sproat and Clitheroe that the one or the other of them ought to have an uncle living somewhere in the environs. But each insisted that the duty of providing him lay with the other: Clitheroe on the ground that he had come to town several months the later and was therefore a comparative stranger; Sproat because, as he maintained, Clitheroe carried about him nepotic suggestions. "You look like a man with lots of uncles," said Sproat, "and I don't." It must be acknowledged that the credit of inventing this avuncular fable belonged to Sproat. It happened of a windy March twilight, when Clitheroe looked at his watch and said: "Quarter of six. Come, we must be getting back to the boarding house." "Now," answered Sproat, who was balancing dreamily on the top rail of a fence, "if you only had an uncle somewhere out this way, with a well-stocked sideboard and a lot of pretty daughters! Then we could fetch up at his house and take dinner, and spend the evening around the fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suburban Sketches This heavenly weather, which the Pilgrim Fathers, with the idea of turning their thoughts effectually from earthly pleasures, came so far to discover, con tinued with slight amelioration throughout the month of May and far into June and it was a matter of constant amazement with one who had known less austere climates, to behold how vegetable life strug gled with the hostile Skies, and, in an atmosphere as chill and damp as that of a cellar, shot forth the buds and blossoms upon the pear - trees, called out the sour Puritan courage of the currant-bushes, taught a reck less native grape-vine to wander and wanton over the southern side of the fence, and decked the banks with violets as fearless and as fragile as New England girls; so that about the end of June, when the heav ens relented and the sun blazed out at last, there was little for him to do but to redden and darken the daring fruits that had attained almost their full growth without his countenance.
