Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if you never have to locate a water well site yourself, there is much within this book that the reader may find of interest about ground water: where it may be found, its origins, and the hydrological cycle. The main emphasis is about groundwater and how to locate well sites with the use of maps, climatological and groundwater reports, and drilling records. These are supplemented by keen field observations of land-forms, stream patterns, seeps, springs and the local vegetation (or lack there of), and particularly the health and girth of trees and the particular species with their different root systems. This text was prepared for the layperson, for the general public with an interest in water. It may be of special interest to students of geography and geology, real estate professionals, governmental organizations such as the Peace Corps, and charitable organizations who are assisting developing nations that have a need for low technical, low-cost methods to solve their water shortage problems.

Book excerpt: Growing demands for water in many parts of the nation are fueling the search for new approaches to sustainable water management, including how best to store water. Society has historically relied on dams and reservoirs, but problems such as high evaporation rates and a lack of suitable land for dam construction are driving interest in the prospect of storing water underground. Managed underground storage should be considered a valuable tool in a water manager's portfolio, although it poses its own unique challenges that need to be addressed through research and regulatory measures.

Book excerpt: Hydrogeology, the science of groundwater, requires a multidisciplinary approach involving many other sciences: surface hydrology, climatology, geology, geography, physics, chemistry, biology, and more. This book takes a broad view, considers water as a single entity, and presents many examples illustrating the variety of existing hydrogeological problems and the diverse scientific, technical, and social approaches used in resolving them. It is intended primarily for students of Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Physical Geography. It will also be useful to all players involved in water-related issues: hydrogeologists, geologists, soil scientists, agronomists, civil engineers, and developers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present publication on karst hydrology and physical speleology combines two subjects which have up to now been treated separately. The two fields of knowledge have gone their separate ways, less as a result of differences in subject matter than of varying approaches. The focal point in karst hydrology lies in the description of subter ranean water with its physical and chemical properties, whereas physical speleology de scribes subterranean cavities with their contents (air, water, and sediments), which gen erally have been created by water. Such cavities can be correctly interpreted only by means of a knowledge of karst hydrology, yet they in turn yield indications of the pro perties of karst water. Karst hydrology and physical speleology are thus two aspects of the subterranean karst phenomenon and should be viewed congruently. This book addresses geologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, geographers, and karstologists, above all speleologists, as well as all friends of caves, especially the cavers among them. Its contents must therefore appeal to two groups: on one hand to the academically trained, whether university faculty, graduates, or students, who as a rule have the necessary basic knowledge to be able to understand the theoretical com ments; on the other hand to the laymen, who have fust-hand experience from their own observations in caves, but who often do not dispose over the scientific foundation necessary for an understanding of the phenomena. Therefore occasionally more attention will be given to problems of a simpler nature and to questions of technical terminology.

The state of the art in the discipline is provided by the articulation of six sections. The first three sections successively carry the reader into the basic attributes of groundwater ecosystems (section 1), the drivers and patterns of biodiversity (section 2), and the roles of organisms in groundwater ecosystems (section 3). The next two sections are devoted to evolutionary processes driving the acquisition of subterranean biological traits (section 4) and the way these traits are differently expressed among groundwater organisms (section 5). Finally, section 6 shows how knowledge acquired among multiple research fields (sections 1 to 5) is used to manage groundwater biodiversity and ecosystem services in the face of future groundwater resource use scenarios. Emphasis on the coherence and prospects of the whole book is given in the introduction and conclusion. - Provides a modern synthesis of research dedicated to the study of groundwater biodiversity and ecosystems - Bridges the gap between community ecology, evolution, and functional ecology, three research fields that have long been presented isolated from each other - Explains how this trans-disciplinary integration of research contributes to understanding and managing of groundwater ecosystem functions - Reveals the contribution of groundwater ecology and evolution in solving scientific questions well beyond the frontiers of groundwater systems
