Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamics of aircraft at high angles of attack is a subject which is being pursued diligently, because the modern agile fighter aircraft and many of the current generation of missiles must perform well at very high incidence, near and beyond stall. However, a comprehensive presentation of the methods and results applicable to the studies of the complex aerodynamics at high angle of attack has not been covered in monographs or textbooks. This book is not the usual textbook in that it goes beyond just presenting the basic theoretical and experimental know-how, since it contains reference material to practical calculation methods and technical and experimental results which can be useful to the practicing aerospace engineers and scientists. It can certainly be used as a text and reference book for graduate courses on subjects related to high angles of attack aerodynamics and for topics related to three-dimensional separation in viscous flow courses. In addition, the book is addressed to the aerodynamicist interested in a comprehensive reference to methods of analysis and computations of high angle of attack flow phenomena and is written for the aerospace scientist and engineer who is familiar with the basic concepts of viscous and inviscid flows and with computational methods used in fluid dynamics.

Book excerpt: An important region of the flight envelope of military aircraft is the transonic regime where fighter aircraft must undergo agile maneuvers, and airlift aircraft must cruise efficiently. Unfortunately it is a speed regime where wind tunnel testing is difficult, and numerical computations are not yet fully viable. Most troublesome is that exact configuration optimization criteria are lacking. Unavoidably the optimization procedure has been an ad hoc procedure, depending on the intuitive skills of the aerodynamicist. During the past decade, there has been significant progress in the development of transonic wind tunnel test techniques and computational methods. Employing these techniques, the aerodynamicist has developed many imaginative design concepts that have added to the optimization data base. It was the purpose of the symposium to review and assess these developments and project the future. Twenty nine papers comprised the meeting with three invited review papers. There was a relatively even mixture of theoretical and experimental papers with many providing test/theory comparisons. Subject matter ranged from simple wing-fuselage interference for both fighter and airlift configurations to those envolving additional components such as nacelle and pylons, powered jets, winglets, and most importantly stores and weapons.

Book excerpt: The AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel held its spring symposium 1980 on Subsonic/Transonic Configuration Aerodynamics at the Hochschule der Bundeswehr Munchen, Neubiberg, 5-7 May, 1980. The requirement of improved performance of military combat and airlift aircraft requires not only highly refined point designs at specific flight conditions, but also mission design to maintain optimal performance over the flight spectrum; for instance, by variable geometry concepts. Of particular importance here is the aerodynamic design of the wing, fuselage, components of the empennage, external and conformal stores, fuselage and wing-mounted nacelle-pylons with their powered jet exhausts at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers such that each component achieves optimal performance under the influence of the other components. Here, not only must adverse interference effects be eliminated, but positive favorable interference must be sought. There have been great strides recently in the understanding of aerodynamic interference through more carefully conducted and highly diagnosed windtunnel tests, as well as by the availability of versatile computer codes and powerful computers. It will be the aim of the Symposium to report on these accomplishments. Vectored thrust in the context with V/STOL in excluded. With this scope the meeting was a direct successor of the FDP-Symposium Aerodynamic Interference held in autumn 1970. At that time the solution of aerodynamic interference problems at subsonic and supersonic speed became feasible with the development of panel methods.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This course was a follow-up to an AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel Symposium on Subsonic/Transonic Configuration Aerodynamics. The emphasis of the course was on the configuration optimization in the transonic regime where both military and commercial aircraft must cruise efficiently and where military aircraft must maneuver in an agile but stable manner. The course material was updated and presented in a more structured fashion emphasizing the fluid dynamic interference mechanisms that are the keys to the optimization. In addition, some aspects of subcritical interference were also covered, including those arising in the takeoff and landing phase of the flight with high lift devices deployed. Specific topics include: Subsonic/Transonic Aerodynamic Interference for Aircraft; Computational Methods for Subsonic and Transonic Aerodynamic Design; Subsonic/Transonic Viscous Interactions; Transonic Airfoil Development; Application of Computational Procedures in Aerodynamic Design; Transonic Empirical Configuration Design Process; External Stores Interference; and Engine/Airframe Interference.

Book excerpt: Several theoretical and empirical methods are comgined into a single computer program to predict lift, drag, and center of pressure on bodies of revolution at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic Mach numbers. The body geometries can be quite general in that pointed, spherically blunt, or truncated noses are allowed as well as discontinuities in nose shape. Particular emphasis is placed on methods which yield accuracies of ninety percent or better for most configurations but yet are computationally fast. theoretical and experimental results are presented for several projectiles and a computer program listing is included an an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsonic and transonic aerodynamic data for a wraparound fin configuration are presented. Free-flight aeroballistic tests to obtain these data were conducted at atmospheric pressure and over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.35. The aerodynamic coefficients and derivatives presented in this paper were extracted from the position-attitude-time histories of the experimentally measured trajectories using nonlinear numerical integration data reduction routines. Results of this analysis indicate that a dynamic instability exists above Mach 1.0 and is related to an out-of-plane side moment which is dependent of the pitch angle. The stability boundaries associated with this side moment are mapped. Designers should consider this moment whenever wraparound fins are used. Keywords include: WAF(Wraparound Fins), Aerodynamic stability, Side moment, Pitch-roll resonance, Folding fins, and Submunitions.
