Book excerpt: From the inspired fiction of Jules Verne to the dark menace of the Cold War, submarines have captivated the imaginations of millions for more than a century. Many inventors have been credited for the submarine, but one significant figure has been seriously overlooked. Without the efforts of Simon Lake, underwater navigation would be quite different from what it is today. Argonaut illustrates Lake's creativity and passion.

Book excerpt: The fact that the Montego Bay Convention has been only ratified by 37 States at present and that it will be some time before the 60 ratifications required by Article 308 are achieved has not prevented states from acting in accordance with the rules drawn up by the Conference. Close on one hundred states have established either exclusive economic zones broadly modelled on Part V or 200-nautical-mile fishery zones and drawn on the principles laid down for exploiting living resources. Although these laws have been formulated unilaterally by states, international custom, since the judgement by the International Court of Justice in the Fisheries Case of 18 December 1951, is derived from concordant national rules. This shift began even before the Conference ended, and has been consolidated since then. Moreover, the régime governing the sea-bed beyond the limits of national jurisdiction defined by Part XI, which was the stumbling block of the Conference, is subject to transitional arrangements on the basis of two resolutions adopted in the Conference's Final Act, one providing for the establishment of a Preparatory Commission and the other on the preliminary activities of pioneer investors. This two-volume work, an earlier edition of which appeared in French, has been written by a team of experts of international renown. It presents an analysis of the Convention with an additional Chapter on the legal régime governing underwater archaeological and historical objects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book commences with a discussion of the policy issues as to whether Australia needed submarines and then the decision to buy AE1 and AE2. It then goes through their coming to Australia, the tragic loss of AE1 in New Guinea on 14 September 1914 and the bravery and daring of the AE2 crew in penetrating the Dardanelles on Anzac Day in 1915. The history then goes on to deal with the J-Class submarines that came to Australia in 1919, the first Oxley and Otway (which went to the RN in the Depression in 1931), and the fact that in World War Two, Australia had no submarines except for the Dutch K IX whose career ended with a battery explosion in 1944. Then the period of the RN Fourth Submarine Squadron based in Sydney is dealt with, including some of the happy memories of those who served in it. The book sets out the story of the new RAN submarine arm from 1963. When Oxley (S 57) arrived in Neutral Bay, Sydney, in 1967, so began the new Australian era of submarines. The basic dates of the O Boats are outlined, along with the building and basic dates of the Collins class. The book deals with some of the issues about the intelligence patrols, about the Future Submarine and also records the numerous plaques, services, memorials and museums in Australia and overseas dedicated to Australian submarines and Australian and NZ submariners. There is a detailed chapter on special submarine craft such as the X-Craft in which some of the submarine heroes like Max Sheean, Henty Henty-Creer and Ken Briggs served, and in some cases died. The appendices to this book are numerous and detailed by a strong team from around the world, including Garry Mellon, Barrie Downer and Pat Heffernan. Numerous photographs have been collected and included in the book to fit in with the text from Darren Brown and others. The appendices also list all Australian submariners who have qualified and served up until mid-2014, including those who have died.

Book excerpt: Submariners are a tight knit group of men bound together by training and experience, and with a language all their own. That language is perhaps a little vulgar, but never intentionally demeaning, and a little irreverent but still worldly. This work is an attempt to preserve and explain some of these curious guys who so proudly wear a shiny metal pin that looks like a strange pair of fish on their left breast. This process of accumulating this new language begins in Boot Camp, and is added to with every change of duty station the sailor undergoes. It is heard aboard the boats and, unknowingly, by family members who can't understand terms like head, deck, and overhead, and who think SOS is a distress signal.

Book excerpt: Terrain Relative Navigation (TRN) provides bounded-error localization relative to an environment by matching range measurements of local terrain against an a priori map. The environment-relative and onboard sensing characteristics of TRN make it a powerful tool for return-to-site missions in GPS-denied environments, with potential applications ranging from underwater and space robotic exploration to pedestrian indoor navigation. For many of these applications, available sensors may be limited by mission power/weight constraints, cost restrictions, and environmental effects (e.g. inability to use a magnetic compass in space). Such limitations not only degrade the accuracy of traditional navigation systems, but further impact the ability to successfully employ TRN. Consequently, despite numerous advances in TRN technology over the past several decades, the application of TRN has been restricted to systems with highly accurate and information-rich sensor systems. In addition, a limited understanding of the effects of map quality and sensor quality on TRN performance has overly restricted the types of missions for which TRN has been considered a viable navigation solution. This thesis develops two new capabilities for TRN methods, resulting in significantly increased TRN applicability. First, a tightly-coupled filtering framework is developed which enables the successful use of TRN on vehicles with both low-accuracy navigation sensors and simple, low-information range sensors. This new filtering framework has similarities to tightly-coupled integration methods for GPS-aided navigation systems. Second, a set of analysis and design tools based on the Posterior Cramer-Rao Lower Bound are developed which allow for reliable TRN performance predictions as a function of both sensor and map quality. These analyses include the development of a new terrain map error model based on the variogram which allows for performance prediction as a function of map resolution. These developed capabilities are validated through field demonstrations on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) operated out of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), where available sensing has been limited primarily by cost. These trials include a real-time, closed-loop demonstration of the developed tightly-coupled TRN framework, enabling 5m accuracy return-to-site on a sensor-limited AUV where traditional TRN methods failed to provide better than 150m accuracy. The results further demonstrate the accurate prediction capability of the developed performance bounds on fielded systems, verifying their utility as design and planning tools for future TRN missions.

Book excerpt: This volume is the third annotated bibliography on this subject area to be compiled by these authors. The first, published by Gordon and Breach, Science Publishers, in 1971, was entitled AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON DIVING AND SUBMARINE MEDICINE. It covered material published during the 1960's. The second volume, entitled UNDERWATER MEDICINE AND RELATED SCIENCES: A GUIDE TO THE LITERATURE, published in 1973 by Plenum Press, covered primarily material published during 1970 and 1971, with some material from 1968 and 1969. The present volume covers material published during 1972 and 1973, but here again some earlier material has been included. The purpose of these annotated bibliographies is to make available a large proportion of the published material, in abstract form, indexed in such a manner as to make it possible to compile a reasonably complete annotated bibliography on any specific subject area in the field. It is possible thus to learn where the work is being done, by whom, and how extensively. Also, it becomes obvious what areas of research are lacking or inadequate. These specific searches can also form a background of reference material on which to base further research, or from which to write monographs or state-of-the-art surveys. Papers, articles and reports listed here are in most cases readily available.

Book excerpt: With the content of an authoritative reference and the excitement of a thriller, this history of the U.S. submarine war is one of the most informative and entertaining books written on the Pacific campaign. The author, a respected journalist and World War II submariner himself, is credited with providing a complete and unbiased account of what happened. When published in 1975, it was the first such account to detail controversial aspects of the American campaign, from the torpedo scandal to discrepancies between claimed and confirmed sinkings. To get to the truth, Clay Blair interviewed scores of skippers, staff officers, and code breakers, and combed thousands of documents and personal papers. In addition, he thoroughly researched the development of the submarine and torpedo from pre-war to post-war times. As a result, he takes the reader into the submarine war at all levels--the highest strategy sessions in Washington, the terrifying moments in subs at the bottom of the ocean waiting out exploding depth charges, the zany efforts of a crew coaxing a chicken to lay an egg. He also exposes the reader to the jealous infighting of admirals vying for power and the problems between cautious older skippers and daring young commanders. Supplementing the text are nearly forty maps showing submarine activity in the context of every important naval engagement in the Pacific, more than thirty pages of photographs, multiple appendixes (including a calendar of submarine war patrols), and an index of over 2,000 entries. This is a work of great scholarship and scope that makes a timeless contribution to the history of World War II.

Book excerpt: 'The Kosmic Symphony' is a holistic approach which examines the evolution of our social, religious and cultural world, our physical and scientific world and finally our inner mind or subjective reality. This book identifies where many of our beliefs and traditions originate. These have been imposed on us by religious authorities, politics, large corporations and institutions. We absorb these ideas without our conscious awareness or control, they can lead to wars and fundamentalism. Science has transformed our understanding of the universe, life and the mind. With this new world-view we have the knowledge to reach our full potential and progress into a new era of self -actualisation and enlightenment. Volume 1 -covers the ascent of humanity into the classical world. Followed by a decent to the dark ages when humans become puppets of Gods, Priests and Kings. Volume 2 brings the thesis forward from the reformation.

Lamb, formerly the editor of "The American Historical Magazine," and one of the best informed historical writers of our times, left a great legacy at her death, especially to the citizens of New York, in her masterful effort "The History of the City of New York." This work has an increasing value with each succeeding year, and, as the late Hon. Thurlow Weed wrote, "No library is complete without it". Everything about New York, from the first day of its settlement until today, that is worth knowing, is between the pages of this valuable volume. This book is widely conceived as “the” authority on the first two centuries of New York City, forever. This is volume two out of two.
