Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarine and Anti-Submarine Cromer, and the spirit which (however personal and diverse in its manifestations) they both drew from the nation that sent them forth Such an understanding would enable the narrator to carry us all with him, For every man of our national birth and breeding would feel, when he was told the story of such heroes, not only their superiority but their likeness to himself. 'there, ' he would say, but for lack Of fortune, or opportunity, or courage, or stature, there goes John Smith.' It is admiration which helps us to feel that, and a mean spirit which conceals it from us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The submarine was undoubtedly the most potent purely naval weapon of the twentieth century. In two world wars, enemy underwater campaigns were very nearly successful in thwarting Allied hopes of victory - indeed, annihilation of Japanese shipping by US Navy submarines is an indicator of what might have been. That the submarine was usually defeated is a hugely important story in naval history, yet this is the first book to treat the subject as a whole in a readable and accessible manner. It concerns individual heroism and devotion to duty, but also ingenuity, technical advances and originality of tactical thought. What developed was an endless battle between forces above and below the surface, where a successful innovation by one side eventually produces a counter-measure by the other in a lethal struggle for supremacy. Development was not a straight line: wrong ideas and assumptions led to defeat and disaster.

There is no such boat in our sub marine flotilla as the X - 4. We ought to have plenty of big, fast, sea-going submarines, with plenty of big, fast sea-planes and battle-cruisers, so that if an invading army ever starts for this country we can meet it and smash it while it is cooped up on transports somewhere in mid ocean. There, and not in shallow, off-shore waters, cumbered with nets and mines, is the true battlefield of the submarine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military history explores more than a century of aerial submarine hunting, from WWI through the Cold War and beyond. U. S. Navy veteran Michael Glynn served as a submarine hunting pilot. Now he chronicles the evolution of this unique combat role from the Great War through the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II and on to secret Cold War confrontations. He traces the parallel evolution of both aircraft and submarine as each side tries to gain advantage. Through his expert analysis, Glynn distills complicated oceanography, operations analysis, and technical theory, helping the reader understand how complex weapons and sensors function. He also examines submarine hunts in action, showing how theory and practice work together to help aviators detected their targets.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarines, Mines and Torpedoes in the War Warfare has become so largely a matter of science that in order to arrive at an intelligent understanding of the naval situation or of the military campaigns in the Great European War, a knowledge of the scientific factors contributing to victory or defeat is essential. And in this volume it has been my aim not only to review the actual fighting underseas, but also to present a compendium of information relative to the submarine fleets and arms of the great Naval Powers engaged; which I venture to hope will prove of present interest on account of the prominent part played by the underwater fighting ships and appliances, and of permanent historic value as being the first work to describe the vast preparations and curious events leading to the new "Submarine Phase" in naval warfare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarines: A List of References in the New York Public Library The destiny of the submarine is as yet but little understood by the casual reader; at the present time its introduction into the art of warfare has caused it to be condemned by many, while others look upon it as a means of defense against or a means of destroying overwhelming sea power and, perhaps, think it may be utilized to assist in extending domination over other peoples when combined with military supremacy on land. I think those who use it for any illegitimate purpose will eventually see their error. Submarine inventors have, from the earliest days, considered the sub marine boat as a means to advanced knowledge of things beneath the surface of the seas, to recover and restore to the use of mankind many of the things that have gone to the bottom of the sea in ships, and also to recover the natural products of the sea, in the nature of shell fish, sponges, coral, pearls, and to reach mineral and other deposits heretofore inaccessible and unavailable to the people. The introduction of the submarine in war will eventually prove a benefit to all of the smaller and less powerful nations, as the submarine is undoubtedly able to offer to any nation the greatest degree of security for the least expenditure of money in the defense of its coast line. This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential new account of how anti-submarine warfare is conducted, with a focus on both historic and present-day operations. This new book shows how until 1944 U-boats operated as submersible torpedo craft which relied heavily on the surface for movement and charging their batteries. This pattern was repeated in WWII until Allied anti-submarine countermeasures had forced the Germans to modify their existing U-boats with the schnorkel. Countermeasures along also pushed the development of high-speed U-boats capable of continuously submerged operations. This study shows how these improved submarines became benchmark of the post-war Russian submarine challenge. Royal Navy doctrine was developed by professional anti-submarine officers, and based on the well-tried combination of defensive and offensive anti-submarine measures that had stood the press of time since 1917, notwithstanding considerable technological change. This consistent and holistic view of anti-submarine warfare has not been understood by most of the subsequent historians of these anti-submarine campaigns, and this book provides an essential and new insight into how Cold War, and indeed modern, anti-submarine warfare is conducted.

I wish I had written the book." ?Capt. Edward L. Beach, USN (Ret.) author of Run Silent, Run Deep "Peter Padfield is the best British naval historian of his generation now working. [His] book...will now become the standard work on the subject." ?Daily Telegraph (London) "Peter Padfield has produced by far the best and most complete critical history of the submarine operations of all the combatants in the Second World War, at the same time providing vivid narrative accounts of particular actions and events." ?Lloyd?s List (London) "An excellent account of submarine warfare in 1939?45... [it] recreates the tribulations and horrors of that especially brutal form of warfare within a sturdily analytical and often critical framework." ?The Economist "[A] marvelously complete and detailed study of World War II submarine warfare...an interesting, serious, and timely book." ?Houston Chronicle "A brilliant submarine warfare study." ?Military Review
