Since then many of our colleagues have encouraged us to publish our approach to the subject in a concise format, easily accessible to a broad mathematical audience. However, it was the invitation by the faculty of the ETH Ziirich to deliver the ETH N achdiplom-Vorlesungen on this material which provided the opportunity for the author to develop our research papers into a format suitable for mathematicians with a modest background in differential geometry. We also hoped it would provide the basis for a graduate course stressing the application of fundamental ideas in geometry. For this opportunity the author wishes to thank Eduard Zehnder and Jiirgen Moser, acting director and director of the Forschungsinstitut fiir Mathematik at the ETH, Gisbert Wiistholz, responsible for the Nachdiplom Vorlesungen and the entire ETH faculty for their support and warm hospitality. This new approach to Teichmiiller theory presented here was undertaken for two reasons. First, it was clear that the classical approach, using the theory of extremal quasi-conformal mappings (in this approach we completely avoid the use of quasi-conformal maps) was not easily applicable to the theory of minimal surfaces, a field of interest of the author over many years. Second, many other active mathematicians, who at various times needed some Teichmiiller theory, have found the classical approach inaccessible to them.

During the second half of the 19th century, it became known that a separately continuous function is not necessarily continuous as a function of all variables. At the beginning of the 20th century, the study of separately holomorphic functions started due to the fundamental work of Osgood and Hartogs. This book provides the first self-contained and complete presentation of the study of separately holomorphic functions, from its beginnings to current research. Most of the results presented have never been published before in book form. The text is divided into two parts. The first part deals with separately holomorphic functions, ``without singularities''. The second part addresses the situation of existing singularities. A discussion of the classical results related to separately holomorphic functions leads to the most fundamental result, the classical cross theorem as well as various extensions and generalizations, to more complicated ``crosses''. Additionally, several applications for other classes of ``separately regular'' functions are given. A solid background in basic complex analysis is a prerequisite. To make the book self contained, all the results are collected in special introductory chapters and referred to at the beginning of each section. I constructed this theory by application of the Li- ville integro-differentiation. To some extent, it is similar to M.M.Djrbashian's factorization theory of the classes Na of functions of a-bounded type in the disc, as much as the well known results on different classes and spaces of regular functions in the half-plane are similar to those in the disc. Besides, the book contains improvements of several results such as the Phragmen-Lindelof Principle and Nevanlinna Factorization in the Half-Plane and offers a new, equivalent definition of the classical Hardy spaces in the half-plane. The last chapter of the book presents author's united work with G.M. Gubreev (Odessa). It gives an application of both a-theories in the disc and in the half-plane in the spectral theory of linear operators. This is a solution of a problem repeatedly stated by M.G.Krein and being of special interest for a long time. The book is proposed for a wide range of readers. Some of its parts are comprehensible for graduate students, while the book in the whole is intended for young researchers and qualified specialists in the field.
