Book excerpt: Substitute teaching is one of the least glamorous areas of the teaching profession. Everyone remembers the day their class made the sub cry or refused to do work the sub assigned, or worse, because the teacher was "just a sub". This book focuses the reader's attention on the problems faced by a substitute teacher in Canadian classrooms. The purpose of this book is threefold. First, it describes some of the difficulties and frustrations which many substitute teachers face on a daily basis. Second, I give brief examples describing the problems, the frustrations and, in some cases, the humour as seen by a real substitute teacher. And third, in a section called, "In a Perfect World", I provide suggestions outlining ways that many of the difficulties described could be alleviated, either by the classroom teacher, the school administration, or by the school board staff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how representations of African in the Anglophone West have changed in the post-imperial age. The period since the Second World War has seen profound changes in sub-Saharan Africa, notably because of decolonization, the creation of independent nation-states and the transformation of the relationships with the West. Using a range of case studies from news media, maps, popular culture, film and TV the contributions assess how narrative and counter-narratives have developed and been received by their audiences in light of these changes. Examining the overlapping areas between media representations and historical events, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of African Studies and Media and Cultural Studies.

Download or read book The Internet of Things for Smart Urban Ecosystems written by Franco Cicirelli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to provide a multidisciplinary overview of methodological approaches, architectures, platforms, and algorithms for the realization of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Urban Ecosystem (SUE). Moreover, the book details a set of real-world applications and case studies related to specific smart infrastructures and smart cities, including structural health monitoring, smart urban drainage networks, smart grids, power efficiency, healthcare, city security, and emergency management. A Smart Urban Ecosystem (SUE) is a people-centric system of systems that involves smart city environments, applications, and infrastructures. SUEs require the close integration of cyber and physical components for monitoring, understanding and controlling the urban environment. In this context, the Internet of Things (IoT) offers a valuable enabling technology, as it bridges the gap between physical things and software components, and empowers cooperation between distributed, pervasive, and heterogeneous entities.

Book Synopsis The Sub-national Dimension of the EU by : Carlo Panara
Download or read book The Sub-national Dimension of the EU written by Carlo Panara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph-form legal study on multilevel governance in the EU and represents a radical change in the approach to this topic. Particularly after the Treaty of Lisbon’s entry into force, research on multilevel governance can no longer remain confined to the analysis of political dynamics or of soft law arrangements. Multilevel governance emerges as a constitutional principle in the European constitutional space, envisaging a method of governance based on the strong involvement of sub-national authorities in the creation and implementation of EU law and policy. Its foundation is in the mosaic resulting from the constitutional systems of the Union and its Member States. Multilevel governance arrangements play a fundamental part in achieving key Treaty objectives (such as subsidiarity, respect for the national identities of the Member States including regional and local self-government, openness, and closeness to the citizen). These arrangements lend legitimacy to EU decision-making, while also promoting constitutionalism and democracy in the EU.
