Book excerpt: Excerpt from Style in Singing This last tone was delivered with the full force and brilliance of her magnificent voice, and was prolonged until the thrill produced in the listener became almost painful in its intensity. Again I ask, why did this world-famous singer perform this passage always in the same way? Unrefiecting people may reply vaguely that it was because the artist sang with expression. But what constitutes expression in singing? No great artist - no matter what the vehicle or medium through which his art finds manifestation - does anything at random. The wind bloweth where it listeth only in appearance; in reality, it is governed by immutable law. Similarly, the outward form of an art is only apparently dictated by caprice and freedom from rule. The effective presentation of every art is based on well defined and accepted principles. And it is with the earnest desire to throw light on this most important phase of vocal art, that I present the principles of Style in Singmg. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Vocal Music His Handbook has been prepared in order to bring about a greater harmony in teaching, and to explain in detail the various steps which must be taken in the study of the books of the different series. Mere methods are of little value unless the material is in strict accordance with the right educational idea; indeed, with the best elementary method the music may be such as utterly to defeat the plan. It is important that every succession of tones, however simple, should be introduced and studied with the musical development ever in view. Mere sight-singing, however skilfully exercised, is but a stepping-stone to the right musical rendering. When the first is over-estimated, we have little that is helpful to the student or singer. Every technical point should im mediately have its musical application. This is an original feature of the Normal Music Course. This principle applies in a large degree to music without words, so that the language of tones may exercise the strongest influence over the mind. In the songs with words, the words must be chosen with the greatest care, each poem simply as read expressing a positive idea. In the union, then, of the music and words, there must be the most positive agreement. The music is the most pertinent and suggestive; but the words, as far as possible, should second the expression of the tones; and in the combination there should be the most accurate correspondence. This correspondence should always be shown after the preparatory work with music and words is fully mastered, so that in the rendering of either there may be no uncertainty. Mere prettiness should never take the place of the best and most earnest expression of musical and literary thought. The selections need not, how ever, be mere problems of tune or time to be worked out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Sing: Meine Gesangskunst The Object Of the first edition is attained. The book has opened the eyes Of many to the nature of the art of song. All those who have anything to say or' write must expect to meet misinterpretations: there are just as many ideas and modes Of expressing the same thing as there are listeners and readers. I have endeavored, in this second edition, to forestall 'misinterpretations and to express better what I had to say in the first. It must not be thought that I lay claim to anything new: But I do lay claim to having translated that which has Often been said and likewise misunderstood, into the language Of the singer who can only guide himself by tone sensations and learn therefrom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tone-Line: Principles of Voice Development The First Principle to be established in learning to sing is, that the mind controls the body. Singing is a physical act, and before the act, must be the mental mandate. The place to begin is at the beginning; our first attention should be directed to the mind. Now, the mind has ever one object in view, the truth. In learning to sing, therefore, we at once ally ourselves with the great souls of all ages; we are seekers after truth. Such is the dignity, the worth, of tone study and tone production; and on no smaller terms can we hope for the development of a great singer.
