Book excerpt: Concerns about global resource management and environmental conservation have drawn attention to the large amounts of energy used by buildings and the resulting impact on the environment. Building Energy Simulation (BES) programs play a crucial role in efforts to reduce energy use by the built environment. However, BES has many areas where sources of uncertainty may enter into the process and propagate to the results. In order for BES to reach its full potential for aiding in energy reduction efforts, a better understanding of the uncertainty in simulation results is required. Much research has been done to uncover the nature of these sources of uncertainty and additional work has been done to explore how the sources of uncertainty interact and propagate to the final simulation program output. Despite the extensive work already conducted on the topic of BES uncertainty, very little research has been done to investigate the effect of the building energy modeler on simulation results. This dissertation research explores the role of the modeler in the uncertainty of BES results, and establishes a testing methodology and classification system for sources of modeler variability. It additionally makes specific recommendations for the mitigation of each class of modeler variability. A study was conducted where 12 professional building energy modelers were provided with identical building plans and asked to create a model of the building, in the BES program eQUEST, in accordance with their typical modeling habits. The building chosen for the modeling task was a single story school administrative building with a vaulted lobby, and it was located in California Climate Zone 4, the climate zone local to the sample of modelers. Time to complete the modeling task was limited to 3 hours to impose time pressure on the participants to expose how modelers prioritize different modeling tasks. All participants submitted the input and output files of the simulation for further analysis. Demographic information on the modelers was collected to determine if modeling decisions were linked to modeler background. Various forms of analyses were employed to explore the study data and to develop a classification method for modeler variability. A one-at-a-time factor analysis (OAT) applied modeler decisions to a best-practices baseline model to assess the effect of individual participant decisions on simulation results. Monte Carlo sampling was applied to the set of participant decisions to create 200 input files that were hybrids of randomly chosen participant decisions. The results of this Monte Carlo analysis yielded the effect of modeler decisions in combination with all other modeler decisions. Classification trees were applied to the Monte Carlo data to investigate the interaction between modeler decisions. Random forests were applied to the Monte Carlo data to more robustly assess interaction effects. In the OAT, classification tree, and random forest analyses, the decision of how to represent the HVAC systems consistently was the most significant, so classification trees and random forests were applied to the individual HVAC system decisions to determine interaction effects with these parameters. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) plots were generated to explore any potential correlations between modeler background and modeler decisions. A combination of the results of the OAT analysis and the random forest analysis yielded 3 basic classes of variability introduced by modelers. A high OAT impact and low random forest impact indicated that modeler decisions in that category differed from the best practices model consistently but had little impact on energy results when combined with other modeler decisions. Low OAT impact and high random forest impact categories were where modelers varied widely in their decisions; the decisions had very little effect on the baseline model on their own but had a large impact on results when combined with other modeler decisions. The final class of modeler variability was characterized by high OAT impact and high random forest impact. In this category, participant decisions varied greatly from each other and from the baseline model setting, and had a large impact on energy results independently and in combination with other modeler decisions. The MCA plots showed little correlation between modeler decisions and modeler background. Future work needs to be conducted to confirm the classification system described above. Tests can be conducted on larger samples of modelers, on different sizes and types of buildings, on modelers and buildings in different climate zones, and in a variation of testing procedures. Furthermore, modeler variability mitigation tactics can be applied to the simulation process for each of the classes of variability to assess whether a reduction in modeler variability results from the mitigation tactics.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a simulation with worked examples on the creation of episodic memories and the troubleshooting ability of maintenance technician students. Previous research shows that domain knowledge, conceptual knowledge, strategic knowledge, and episodic memories are all required to successfully troubleshoot. While domain, conceptual, and strategic knowledge can all be taught using traditional instruction, episodic memories require students to experience the actual troubleshooting of a fault. Simulations and worked examples are two instructional methods that have proven effective at teaching troubleshooting. This research specifically examined how a simulation combined with worked examples would affect 1) immediate troubleshooting abilities, 2) the creation of episodic memories, and 3) delayed troubleshooting abilities. This study was conducted in two stages and administered via a learning management system due to COVID-19 restrictions. The first stage included a pre-test, a training session using the simulation with worked examples, and an immediate post-test for near and far transfer of troubleshooting abilities. The second stage occurred one week later and included the final posttest for near and far transfer of troubleshooting abilities and creation of episodic memories. Answers to four troubleshooting questions on each of the pre-test and immediate and delayed post-tests were collected to determine any differences in the immediate and retained troubleshooting abilities. Answers to the solution mapping questions were collected to determine the creation of episodic memories. A repeated measure analysis of variance was conducted in SPSS to analyze the results of the troubleshooting pre- and post-tests. A correlational coefficient was used to determine any interaction between episodic memories and delayed troubleshooting abilities. Previous experience levels and participants' major of study were also examined to determine their effect on the results. The findings show the simulation with worked examples had a statistically significant effect on delayed troubleshooting abilities and the created episodic memories had a positive correlation with the delayed troubleshooting, both with a medium effect size. However, the simulation with worked examples had no statistically significant effect on immediate troubleshooting abilities. Levels of previous experience and participants' major of study had little effect on the results.

Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the experiment and model-based research on one important topic of human dynamics, namely, the legged locomotion under varying gravity environment generated by a passive statically-balanced reduced-gravity simulator. The requirements of human space exploration have raised interest about the legged locomotion in a hyper/hypo gravity environment. The main questions concern how a legged locomotor system, evolved to cope with the Earth terrestrial gravity, could move in an environment with different gravity acceleration magnitude. Will the well-established locomotion relevant criterion still be applicable to reduced-gravity conditions? The objective of this research is to study and investigate the possible effects of reduced gravity on human bipedal locomotion kinematics and dynamics. To simulate reduced gravity conditions in a laboratory environment, a high-fidelity, low-cost, easy-to-operate reduced-G facility is developed based on the static balancing technique. The dynamic similarity hypothesis (DSH) is tested and explored for human walking and running under the simulated reduced gravity environments. The dissertation contents eight chapters. In Chapter 1, a brief background research approach and the objective of the work is given. The background contents the importance of dynamic similarity hypothesis in governing the locomotion dynamics by providing a potential unifying theory for combing the effects of speed, size and gravity. The Froude number, which is widely accepted as the criteria for defining dynamic similarity, is also introduced. The most prominent mechanical paradigms of walking and running, namely the stiff inverted pendulum and the compliant spring-mass model, are introduced by demonstrating their importance in analyzing legged locomotion. With the limitations of current methods in simulating zero- or reduced- gravity stated, the need of using the statically balanced technique to develop an innovative reduced gravity simulator are shown. In Chapter 2, the methods of using inverted pendulum and spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) models are reviewed to represent the two distinct human locomotion strategies, i.e. walking and running respectively. The dynamic similarity hypothesis is key issue in understanding and predicting legged system dynamics. The limitations of using Froude number to determine the dynamically similar locomotion under reduced-G environment are also addressed. In chapter 3, the need of simulating a reduced-G environment emerges in order to better explore the dynamic similarity hypothesis with varying gravity conditions. The design and development of one passive, multiple degrees of freedom reduced gravity simulator using the underlying static balancing technology is included. The conditions of realizing the gravity compensation to simulate reduced gravity environment by appropriate design parameter choice are addressed. It is showed that, by properly selecting the springs in the system, the total potential energy of the human and mechanism combined system can remain constant, such that a desired level of gravity will be compensated. In Chapter 4, the end-effector dynamic effects of the developed reduced gravity simulator are analyzed in terms of impedance between the robotic system and the test subject. It is addressed to what extent the system inertia and friction forces could affect the gravity compensation. In Chapter 5, the reduced gravity simulator prototype is demonstrated with the design and the lab equipment setup included. The fidelity of the development reduced gravity facility in simulating one reliable reduced gravity environment is tested and validated using static and dynamic experiments. The performance of the human legged locomotion with the system is also reported in terms of the gait kinematics with different simulated gravity conditions. In Chapter 6, the test of dynamic similarity hypothesis is conducted for walking and running gaits with reduced gravity environment generated by the reduced gravity simulator. The results show that Froude number fails to define dynamic similarity for both the walking and running gaits under the reduced gravity conditions. This raises one important question: why does the Froude number predict dynamic similarity in Earth gravity, but no in simulated reduced gravity? In Chapter 7, a general criteria is identified that must be met in order to ensure dynamically similar locomotion in different gravity conditions. Our study is based on the analysis of the bipedal locomotion with the spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model. This provides a theoretical framework for defining the correct dynamic similarity hypothesis, and therefore allows us to address the above questions. In the final part of this dissertation, in Chapter 8, the results of the preceding chapters are summarized to a more coherent picture of human legged dynamics. The complete sufficient criterion for dynamic similarity utilizing the effects of speed, size, gravity and leg elasticity are built for the bipedal gaits under varying gravity environment.
