Book excerpt: Corrosion is one of the most terrifying incidents that engineers does not want on the pipeline, especially when involving billion of dollars losses. Many industries depended on the pipeline for transporting their raw material or products from the places of source to the place of treatment and finally to the consumers. Among the industries that widely used the function of pipeline were oil and gas industries, water treatment and also crude oil industries. Therefore, as the most important part in transportation role, pipeline need to be ensured always in great condition and anything that could cause damages to these railways must be control immediately before unwanted accident happens. Currently, there were report that said pipeline damages was very dangerous to the environment whether to the human being or to the nature. There were some human fatality and body damages of the environment that caused billion of dollars losses. Due to all consequences that would occur in the future as the punishment for the lack of information on the conservation of pipelines, the research based on this problem will be done to find out the cause of buried pipelines damages due to the soil. The research will focus on the soil properties and its effects towards the corrosion of carbon steel pipeline. The parameters that will be the variables in this research are clay content, moisture content, pH value and also particles size of soil. Relationship between these parameters with the corrosion rate will be investigated properly. The pipelines samples will be taken from actual segment and will be buried in different condition of soil based on previous parameters. About 180 samples plates will be buried for at least 5 months to get the real corrosion rate for different type of soil condition. Once a month the retrieval procedure will be done to check the rate of corrosion and also to ensure the soil properties remain stables as been set up. After all the samples had been retrieve from its medium of different soil conditions, the data will be interpreted in form of tables and graph to shows different parameters will get different results. The result from linear regression analysis and also using excel analysis had shown that the pH parameter were could accept the hypothesis of pH condition were the major influence in corrosion rate phenomenon while others had rejected the hypothesis to become the major influence. The ANOVA analysis also shown the correlation coefficient of all the parameters were high but only the pH condition were satisfy the significance value with lower than 0.05. The pH condition, moisture and clay parameter could be study further while the particles size particles does not suitable for further study.

However pipelines for transportation need to consider factors such as strength of material, cost, corrosion caused by carrier fluid and soil properties on corrosion. It is essential to have knowledge about the soils which may cause corrosion to the pipelines. Analysis on the soils are done for investigate the physical properties such as structure or texture and permeability of soils and also the chemical properties for example soil pH and conductivity. Structure of soil is studied by using sedimentation separation method to distinguish weight percent of clay, sand and silt. Permeability of soil is determined by constant head and falling head permeability test. Soil chemical properties are determined by pH meter and conductivity meter. Corrosion rate can be determined by weight-loss method that determined the metal loss during corrosion. Moisture content of soils is determined by weighting initial and final weight after drying in oven. One-way ANOVA test of the corrosion data with factor which type of soil showed that the model developed is limited to certain type soil. Result analysis will be done by linear and non-linear correlation regressions such as Weibull and exponential growth and decay to study the relationships of corrosion rate with time. Result of comparison of three curve fitting method showed that clay and silty clay loams is moderately fitted with exponential fit, while sand and silt is largely deviated from all three curve fit method. Trend analysis result of soil type clay and silty clay loam only can be used to model the correlation dynamic for corrosion control with reasonable accuracy. Corrosion model developed from averaged observed data yield unsatisfied fit of model to observed data. However, by further eliminate extreme observed data for each month for each type of soils the adjusted exponential model for all type of soil yield high R2 value.

Although soil,Äôs corrosion phenomenon has been understood and identified long time ago, pipe failures due to corrosive soil are uncontrollable and unavoidable despite the use of protective coatings and techniques such as cathodic protection. Therefore, it is essential to review the causes of soil,Äôs corrosivity for the protection of steel pipes. This chapter demonstrates the influence of varying moisture and chloride contents of soils on the corrosion of coated and uncoated steel pipes. Carbon steel specimens (coated and uncoated) were buried in soils of 20, 40, 60, and 80¬†wt.% moisture content, respectively, while the chloride concentration introduced in soil was 0, 5, and 10¬†wt.%, respectively. Through the analysis of experiments, it is revealed that the corrosion rate of pipes buried in soil increases with increase in moisture content up to critical moisture and chloride values. The influence of soil,Äôs moisture and chloride on the corrosion products formed on steel pipes was investigated and comprehensively explained in this chapter. Authors believe that the knowledge presented in this chapter can be applied to other structures or utilities buried in corrosive soils.

Transmission gas pipeline is an important part of oil and gas industries and the carbon steel is a primary material for construction the pipeline due to its low cost and availability, but it is very susceptible to corrosion in CO2 environments. Carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion is the major problem in oil and gas industries that causes the pipeline failures. Aqueous carbon dioxide (carbonic acid) is corrosive and corrodes the carbon steel pipelines and it is influenced by several environmental factors such as pH, temperature, partial pressure of CO2, hydrodynamics, etc. Actually there are many types of corrosion which occur in pipeline but in this study only focused on CO2 corrosion and only two environmental factors which is pH and temperature were investigated. In this study, SOLTEQ Corrosion Study Kits, Model BP01 is used as an apparatus to examine the corrosion rate of metal. Based on the result from the experiment, it was stated that acidic condition recorded the corrosion rate of weight loss was very high. In the temperature test with 3.5% NaCl solution, corrosion rate was high at temperature 1200C. From the research, the corrosion occured in high temperature condition and at low pH environment. As the temperature increase, the corrosion rate also increases due to the dissolution of iron ion and formation of weak carbonic acid. The weak carbonic acid dissociates into carbonate and hydrogen ion, which increase the cathodic reaction on the metal surface. In acidic condition, the available H+ ions makes H+ reduction the dominating cathodic reaction and corrosion rate is found to be sensitive at this low pH.
