Book excerpt: This report describes results of the second phase of a study of techniques for using laser radiation to detect and measure vibration of mechanical structures. During the first study phase, a number of methods were suggested and demonstrated; two of these were selected as sufficiently promising to merit further investigation. One of these methods is the intermediate frequency optical heterodyne system, which provides quantitative data about the motion of a particular very small area on the mechanical structure. The other method is a qualitative interference technique for observing the vibrational mode patterns, so that the number of points to be measured by other methods can be reduced. During the second study phase, these two methods have been developed analytically and experimentally. A breadboard optical heterodyne system was built, and detection of audio frequency vibrations at levels from one centimeter to less than 0.1 micron peak-to-peak has been achieved with a variety of surface materials. The performance of this system using two different types of demodulation circuits was investigated in detail. A model structure was fabricated for tests involving comparisons of the qualitative and quantitative methods. It has been shown that a very good knowledge of the vibrational modes can be obtained using the two methods in combination. The qualitative interference method also has been extended to include the measurement of axes of rotation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a continuous learning tool for experienced technical staff facing laser vibrometry technology for the first time. The book covers both theoretical aspects and practical applications of laser Doppler vibrometry, and is accompanied by a multimedia presentation that allows the audience to browse the content and come as close as possible to performing real experiments. After a brief introduction, Chapter 2 presents supporting theory, providing general information on light sources, light scattering and interference for a better understanding of the rest of the book. Chapter 3 examines the theory of laser vibrometers, explaining interferometers from an optical perspective and in terms of the related electronics. It also addresses options like tracking filters and different signal demodulation strategies, since these have a significant impact on the practical use of vibrometers. Chapter 4 explores the configurations that are encountered in today’s instrumentation, with a focus on providing practical suggestions on the use of laser vibrometers. Lastly, Chapter 5 investigates metrology for vibration and shock measurements using laser interferometry, and analyses the uncertainty of laser vibrometers in depth.
Book Synopsis New Techniques in Experimental Structural Dynamics Using a Scanning Laser Vibrometer by :
Download or read book New Techniques in Experimental Structural Dynamics Using a Scanning Laser Vibrometer written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is to develop new techniques in experimental structural dynamics that use a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) to measure structural vibration. This report discusses use of a fixed laser vibrometer for vibration control experiments and for vibration testing. The laser vibrometer measures velocity directly with a small time and phase delay. Thus use of the laser as a sensor can improve performance of a control system for vibration suppression. Furthermore, the laser can be moved over the surface of the structure to measure the vibration of many points. Experiments are being performed using the laser to measure vibration, and piezoceramic patch actuators to suppress vibration. Laser reflection is being investigated as a new way to study the vibration response of structures. This technique is a very simple way to study vibration and control of structures by mapping the operational deflections onto simple line patterns. The laser is also being used to measure vibration through the glass door of a vacuum oven. The project is to study the effect of high temperatures on piezoceramic materials, structural adhesives, and structural damping treatments. The laser can measure vibration on high temperature surfaces where other sensors would fail.

Book Synopsis Experimental Techniques for Measuring Vibrations Using a Laser Interferometer by : Ronald A. Darby
Download or read book Experimental Techniques for Measuring Vibrations Using a Laser Interferometer written by Ronald A. Darby and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing and some apparently novel experimental techniques for measuring vibrations by use of a HeNe gas laser interferometer are evaluated. Schemes for obtaining accurate, absolute measurements of displacements less than 100 A, such as used in calibrating accelerometers, are considered as well as are methods of scanning a vibrating surface in order to obtain its dynamic displacement profile, as is often desired in acoustic radiation studies. The effect of intensity fluctuations of the light source, variations of the medium in the optical paths, background vibrational noise, and other phenomena are evaluated by comparison of the theory with measurements made on both a vibrating elastic plate and a vibration shake table. It is shown that experimental measurements at low displacements (“1938 A) can be compared with theory without resorting to statistical evaluations of instrument error and undesired time-variant parameters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SEM Handbook of Experimental Structural Dynamics stands as a comprehensive overview and reference for its subject, applicable to workers in research, product design and manufacture, and practice. The Handbook is devoted primarily to the areas of structural mechanics served by the Society for Experimental Mechanics IMAC community, such as modal analysis, rotating machinery, structural health monitoring, shock and vibration, sensors and instrumentation, aeroelasticity, ground testing, finite element techniques, model updating, sensitivity analysis, verification and validation, experimental dynamics sub-structuring, quantification of margin and uncertainty, and testing of civil infrastructure. Chapters offer comprehensive, detailed coverage of decades of scientific and technologic advance and all demonstrate an experimental perspective. Several sections specifically discuss the various types of experimental testing and common practices utilized in the automotive, aerospace, and civil structures industries. · History of Experimental Structural Mechanics · DIC Methods - Dynamic Photogrammetry · LDV Methods · Applied Digital Signal Processing · Introduction to Spectral - Basic Measurements · Structural Measurements - FRF · Random and Shock Testing · Rotating System Analysis Methods * · Sensors Signal Conditioning Instrumentation · Design of Modal Tests · Experimental Modal Methods · Experimental Modal Parameter Evaluation · Operating Modal Analysis Methods * · Analytical Numerical Substructuring · Finite Element Model Correlation · Model Updating · Damping of Materials and Structures · Model Calibration and Validation in Structures* · Uncertainty Quantification: UQ, QMU and Statistics * · Nonlinear System Analysis Methods (Experimental) · Structural Health Monitoring and Damage Detection · Experimental Substructure Modeling · Modal Modeling · Response (Impedance) Modeling · Nonlinear Normal Mode Analysis Techniques (Analytical) * · Modal Modeling with Nonlinear Connection Elements (Analytical) · Acoustics of Structural Systems (VibroAcoustics) * · Automotive Structural Testing * · Civil Structural Testing · Aerospace Perspective for Modeling and Validation · Sports Equipment Testing * · Applied Math for Experimental Structural Mechanics * Chapter Forthcoming Contributions present important theory behind relevant experimental methods as well as application and technology. Topical authors emphasize and dissect proven methods and offer detail beyond a simple review of the literature. Additionally, chapters cover practical needs of scientists and engineers who are new to the field. In most cases, neither the pertinent theory nor, in particular, the practical issues have been presented formally in current academic textbooks. Each chapter in the Handbook represents a ’must read’ for someone new to the subject or for someone returning to the field after an absence. Reference lists in each chapter consist of the seminal papers in the literature. This Handbook stands in parallel to the SEM Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics, where this Handbook focuses on experimental dynamics of structures at a macro-scale often involving multiple components and materials where the SEM Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics focuses on experimental mechanics of materials at a nano-scale and/or micro-scale.
