Book excerpt: Axial fans are extensively used in industries for various applications such as mine ventilation, air conditioning system, heat exchangers, and so forth. In the view of low head produced by an axial flow impeller, drag acquires greater importance in axial flow impellers than that of centrifugal and mixed flow impellers. The axial fan performance strongly linked to aerodynamic properties of the blades, so the main objective is to analyze the fluid flow through an axial fan impeller with aerofoil cross-section. This project work presents the Modeling and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis of 2-D and 3-D flow field through an axial flow fan rotor. The aim of the project is to find the aerodynamic performance and analysis of fluid flow through an axial flow fan. The main purpose of this work is to analyze the nature of fluid flow through an axial flow fan at designed and off designed conditions using turbulence model. Here, k-turbulence model is used for CFD analysis.

Book excerpt: Axial Flow Fans: Design and Practice focuses on the design of axial flow fans and the practices involved in their applications. The manuscript first offers information on the fluid mechanics of ducted fans, boundary layer and skin friction relations, and aerofoil data for blade design. Discussions focus on flow deflection in cascade of aerofoils, pitching moment, lift, surface roughness in turbulent boundary layers, turbulent boundary layers in pressure gradients, laminar skin friction, viscosity and boundary layers, and similarity and non-dimensional numbers. The text then ponders on vortex flows in ducting and fan, ducts, and introduction to fan design methods. The book takes a look at the momentum and blade element considerations on free vortex flow of rotor and rotor losses. Topics include momentum considerations, profile drag, tip clearance losses, optimum conditions in terms of the flow and swirl coefficients, pressure relations and velocity vectors, and thrust and torque gradients. Tail fairing design and associated losses, overall efficiencies, torque, thrust, and power, and the design of fan unit with arbitrary vortex flow are also discussed. The publication is a dependable source of information for engineers and readers interested in the design of axial flow fans and practices involved in their operation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flows are encountered in our daily life as well as in engineering industries. Identifying the temporal and spatial distribution of fluid dynamic properties is essential in analyzing the processes related to flows. These properties, such as velocity, turbulence, temperature, pressure, and concentration, play important roles in mass transfer, heat transfer, reaction rate, and force analysis. However, obtaining the analytical solution of these fluid property distributions is technically difficult or impossible. With the technique of finite difference methods or finite element methods, attaining numerical solutions from the partial differential equations of mass, momentum, and energy have become achievable. Therefore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged and been widely applied in various fields. This book collects the recent studies that have applied the CFD technique in analyzing several representative processes covering mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and thermal engineering.

Book excerpt: Two digital computer programs have been formulated for predicting performance characteristics of centrifugal and axial fans which may be used to provide lift air for large surface effect vehicles. Pressure rise and flow characteristics of forwardly curved, radial, and backwardly curved centrifugal fans can be evaluated. Axial fans having either inlet flow prerotators or exit flow straighteners can also be handled in the program. Sample results are presented to illustrate the method of calculation and the nature of the results. (Author).

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was aimed at improving the efficiency and decrease the noise generated by a cooling fan used by GE transportation to cool a row of resistor networks which dissipate excess energy generated by regenerative power in an inverter application. The first part of study focused on determining the effect of various parameters on the performance of the fan quantitatively by using FLUENT, a general purpose CFD code. The effects of parameters such as hub to tip ratio, chord length/thickness and solidity/number of blades was studied. Once the effect of these parameters was found a new fan was designed which increased the efficiency at the operating point from 73% to 77%. This new fan had a longer blade (increased by 0.75 inches), less number of blades (24 reduced to 18) and a larger chord length (the airfoil scaled by 1.5 time). The hub shape was also modified to reduce separation at the hub. Although a more efficient design, this new fan was found to make more noise with the peak dB levels increasing from 89dB to 110dB due to a higher rate of change of axial force on blades which is proportional to the sound pressure level. Thus a different approach was adopted, an inlet guide vane (IGV) with different lean angles were experimented with. It was seen that a 6 degree lean angle eliminated the peak at the first harmonic of the blade pass frequency (2400Hz) and a 15 degree lean angle eliminated the first and the second harmonic of the blade pass frequency (2400Hz and 3600Hz). The first peak at the blade passing frequency remained approximately the same (~89dB) with the IGV lean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and updated, this well established and highly successful book gives a competent account of the fundamental theory of turbomachines. A concise and unified approach to the subject is employed which fills the need for a comprehensive introductory text suitable for most engineering curricula. The theoretical approach, based firmly on the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, makes the book particularly suitable for undergraduate courses. It has also proved very useful to professional engineers who require a relevant text on the basic physical processes in turbomachines and their theoretical representation. Several modifications have been incorporated in the text in the light of recent advances in the subject. Further information on cavitation has been included and a new section on the optimum design of a pump inlet taking account of cavitation limitations has been added. Certain chapters have been extended: the section on 'Constant specific mass flow' design now includes the flow equations for a following rotor row, and the section on the definition of blade shapes has been extended to include the parabolic arc camber line blade. A list of symbols used in the text has been added. Each chapter contains a selection of useful problems and answers are provided at the end of the book. SI/Metric units are used throughout
