Book excerpt: The level of bank development has a determinant effect on the growth potentials of a developing economy. In response, this study examined the impact of banking sector development on foreign investment inflows in the West African countries of Nigeria and Ghana. The study relied on secondary data for analysis and made use of multiple regression technique. However, to ensure the authenticity of our result, Augmented Dickey-Fuller unit root test and Johansen Cointegration techniques were respectively employed to test for the presence unit root and long-run equilibrium relationship in the exogenous variables. Additionally, causal relationships were tested with Granger Causality. It was revealed that banking sector development has a significant influence on foreign investment inflows in the two West African countries. Specifically, domestic credit to private sector and bank deposit rate has significant influence on foreign investment inflows in both countries. Whereas domestic credit to private sector is directly related to the dependent variable in Ghana, it is related inversely in Nigeria. It was also discovered that bank lending rate is significantly and positively related to foreign investment in Ghana. Intermediation efficiency and profitability of banks should be improved by enhancing the capital structure and adopting the appropriate lending rate especially in Nigeria as measures to attract more inflows of foreign investment in both countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the financial system should be regulated and structured to achieve the twin goals of inclusive growth and financial stability, with a focus on African low-income countries (LICs). The subject and content of this book is original in that it attempts to draw on the lessons and radical rethinking on the financial sector in developed and middle income countries, arising in the wake of the international financial crisis. It includes four in- depth country case studies, of Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Ethiopia, but also analyses the empirical evidence for Sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, evaluating the relevance (or not) of such major changes for the very different financial sectors and economies in low income countries. Achieving Financial Stability and Growth in Africa has major academic and policy implications, especially for low income countries, but also more generally, on broader issues. These include the desirable size of the financial sector, as well as more specific issues, such as the high cost of borrowing of small and medium enterprises in LICs, and possible measures to reduce it. Highly topical subjects like the appropriate regulation of the financial sector and management of capital flows are discussed in depth. Though drawing on comprehensive reviews of the literature, this volume has the virtue of the large comparative academic and policy experience of researchers, as well as in-depth case studies, that take account of institutional and economic features of low- income countries. Written by senior academics and policy-makers, this book is a must read for those researching or participating in the financial sectors of low-income countries, as well as in developed economies. It is also suitable for those who study political economy and public finance.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 4.60, , course: Banking and Finance, language: English, abstract: The objectives of this study includes to examine the effects of banking sector reforms on bank performance, savings, investments, developments of the Nigerian Banking System and Economic Growth. The banking sector is without no doubt a very essential part of the economy of a nation and any reforms carried out in it extend to other parts of the economy representing a transformational moment for the economy and its people. So it remains a nationwide challenge that the Nigerian banking sector and it’s reforms haven’t been able to significantly support the long-term financial needs of the real sector or facilitate the growth of the Nigerian economy The Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) Test and The Phillip-Perron Test were used to test for stationarity of the variables, while the Johansen co-integration test was employed to indicate the existence of a long-run relationship among Gross Domestic Product—which acted as the Economic Growth proxy, Commercial Bank’s Capital, Commercial Bank’s Credit, and Number of Commercial Bank Branches which acted as the other variables. Secondary data was sourced from Commercial Bank Statistics, Central Bank Of Nigeria Bulletins, Nigeria Bureau Of Statistics, Statistical Bulletins for the period of 1998-2017. Conclusively, there was a positive and significant relationship betweenEconomic Growth and Banking Sector Reforms in the long run, but a negative relationship between Economic Growth and Financial Sector Reforms in the short-run. It was recommended that the government should ensure political and macroeconomic stability as the activities in all other sectors are affected by them, and that people are enlightened on the benefits of banking sector reforms so that they don’t take opposing actions against the goal of reforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides a critical evaluation of financing options for sustainable development in Africa. While sustainability has long been the watchword for development programs, and while many African countries have taken initiatives to develop integrated frameworks that tackle developmental challenges—including poverty, education, and health—financing has remained a challenge. In this book, an expert team of chapter authors examines new financing options while also exploring how traditional financing means, such as foreign aid and foreign direct investment, can be more effective for sustainability. The authors discuss how African nations can build adequate structures and productive capacity to create a platform that can meet present economic, social, and environmental needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Practical case studies and scientific evidence give this book a unique approach that is both qualitative and quantitative. This book will be of interest to students, practitioners, and scholars of development studies, public policy and African economics.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Xiamen University, language: English, abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is one of the economic growth stimulus due to its associated variables such as capital investment, technical know-how, knowledge transfer and managerial competence required for economic growth. In the last decade, China has emerged on the international financial scene as both financier and investment partner to African economies. Many African economies such as the oil producing and exporting ones have witnessed streams of China’s FDI in their economies whereas non-oil exporting ones have accessed some of China’s FDI in selective sectors. This paper aims at investigating the relationship between China’s FDI and economic growth in Ghana measured by real average annual domestic product (GDP) per capita growth for the period 2001-2010. By using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model, the result indicates that China’s FDI has negative significant effect on Ghana’s economic growth. However, it exerts different effects on value added in the three economic sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the causality relationship between banking sector operations in Nigeria and foreign direct investment from 1997 to 2015. The causal relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and banking sector development in Nigeria is not clear yet, while there abounds empirical and theoretical studies on the nexus between foreign direct investment and economy in general, considerable attempts has not been made on the causality relationship between and banking operations in Nigeria. Specifically, this study ascertained the causal relationship between banking sector deposits, loans and advances, foreign exchange transactions, domiciliary operations, international banking operations and foreign direct investment. To achieve these objectives, this study employed Ordinary Least Square (OLS) econometric technique, Auto Regressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) bound test and granger causality test among others. Secondary data were collected from Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin of 2015. The result indicated significant causal bidirectional relationship between banking sector deposits, foreign exchange transactions and foreign direct investments; a significant unidirectional causal relationship between domiciliary operations and foreign direct investment, while no significant causal relationship existed between loans and advances, international banking operations and foreign direct investment. The study recommends that banking sector should adopt completely smart banking as this evidences low risk, reliability and stability of the banking sector which is essential for inflow of foreign direct investments. Central Bank of Nigeria should cautiously focus on tackling monetary policy variables such monetary policy rate, cash reserve ratio and loan portfolio which a capable of attracting investors from abroad.

This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an attempt to ensure greater participation in the global economy, developing countries have increasingly liberalized, privatized and deregulated their economies since the mid-1980s. More welcoming policies to attract foreign capital inflows have been a prominent component of this trend. In this study, an attempt is made to analyze the impact of foreign direct investment and remittances inflow on economic growth of Nigeria in a quest to find a reasonable answer to the question of whether FDI and remittances inflows constitute vital sources of economic growth to Nigeria. The study employed the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) approach. It was established that foreign direct investment has a positive but non-significant impact on Nigeria's economic growth. However, it is evident from the outcome of the study that the remittances inflow has a negative though non-significant impact on Nigeria economic growth. The policy implication of this study is that government should build an investment-friendly environment free of insecurity and corruption, reduce the cost of doing business and put in place the mechanism to attract more capital inflows to boost domestic production. By doing this, Foreign investors will have confidence in Nigeria economy and commit more funds in form of Foreign Direct Investment in Nigeria which will enhance domestic production. Remittances inflow can then be channeled to consumption of these domestic goods and services rather than on imported goods. This will increase aggregate demand and ultimately affect output and growth in Nigeria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: -, -, language: English, abstract: The ongoing financial crisis has reinforced the importance of capital in the industrial development and economic growth of a country. In the last two years, industries have closed down owing to lack of capital occasioned by the global financial meltdown. From America, London, other European countries, Asia and Africa, governments have had to intervene in other to bail out some ailing industries and forestall total collapse of the economy. These show the importance of credit either from bank or any other means to industries. Recognizing the importance of capital in economic growth, Mackinnon and Shaw (1973), outlined the procedures for strengthening the financial sector of an economy so as to enable it play the all important role of providing capital for industrial development. Among the basic explanations for this is that the financial sector serves to reallocate funds from the supply side, given their investment opportunities, to the demand side with a shortage of funds. Thus, an economy with well-developed financial institutions will be better able to allocate resources to industries that yield the highest returns. The manufacturing sector is a catalyst to the modern economy and has a many dynamic benefits that are crucial for economic transformation, (Loto, 2005). The manufacturing sector is a leading sector. It helps to increase productivity in relation to import substitution, export expansion, creating foreign exchange earning capacity, raising employment and per capital income which according to Loto, (2005), widens the scope of consumption in dynamic patterns. Ogwuma, (1995) asserts that the manufacturing sector promotes the growth of investment at a faster rate than any other sector of the economy as well as wider and more efficient linkages among different sectors.
