Book excerpt: In this thesis, we performed a study for the decay modes D+ → + K-K+K+ and D+s → + K-K+K+, using the data collected by the E791, a hadroproduction of charm experiment at Fermilab. The D+ → + K-K+K+ decay is doubly Cabibbo suppressed while the D+s → + K-K+K+ decay is singly Cabibbo suppressed. We found 11.6 +- 3.9 events in the D+ mass region and 8.9 +- 3.3 in the D+s mass region. The D+ → + K-K+K+ branching ratio is measured to be (3.7 +- 1.3 +- 0.6) x 10-4 while the D+ → + K-K+K+ branching ratio relative to D+s → + K-K+K+ is measured to be (4.2 +- 1.5 +- 0.6) x 10-2.

Our results are compatible with no mixing and no CP violation. At the 95% confidence level, allowing for CP violation, we find the mixing parameters x[prime][sup 2]

Theoretical arguments suggest that these decays may be enhanced relative to Cabibbo-allowed D+ decays. Use of hadronically tagged D+D− events produced in the decay of the? (3770), reduce backgrounds significantly, allowing the isolation of three candidate events in the?+?+?− final state and a limit on the relative decay rate of the?+?°channel. 4 refs., 2 figs.

From a sample of 234 signal events, they find a branching ratio of?(D° → K+?−)/?(D° → K−?+) = (0.429{sub -0.061}{sup +0-.063} ± 0.027)% under the assumptions of no mixing and no CP violation. Allowing for CP violation, the find a branching ratio of (0.435{sub -0.061}{sup +0.063} ± 0.028)% and a CP asymmetry of 0.178{sub -0.141}{sup +0.144} ± 0.041. The branching ratio for the case of mixing with no CP violation is (0.381{sub -0.163}{sup +0.167} ± 0.092)%. They also present limits on charm mixing.

Book excerpt: Using a sample of 232 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory we study the decay B{sup -} {yields} [K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}]{sub D}K*{sup -} where the K{sup +}{pi}{sup -} is either from a Cabibbo-favored {bar D}{sup 0} decay or doubly-suppressed D{sup 0} decay. We measure two observables that are sensitive to the CKM angle {gamma}; the ratio R of the charge-averaged branching fractions for the suppressed and favored decays; and the charge asymmetry A of the suppressed decays: R = 0.046 {+-} 0.031(stat.) {+-} 0.008(syst.); A = -0.22 {+-} 0.61(stat.) {+-} 0.17(syst.).
