Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides comprehensive coverage of technologies which integrate adsorption and biological processes in water and wastewater treatment. The authors provide both an introduction to the topic as well as a detailed discussion of theoretical and practical considerations. After a review of the basics involved in the chemistry, biology and technology of integrated adsorption and biological removal, they discuss the setup of pilot- and full-scale treatment facilities, covering powdered as well as granular activated carbon. They elucidate the factors that influence the successful operation of integrated systems. Their discussion on integrated systems expands from the effects of environmental to the removal of various pollutants, to regeneration of activated carbon, and to the analysis of such systems in mathematical terms. The authors conclude with a look at future needs for research and develoment. A truly valuable resource for environmental engineers, environmental and water chemists, as well as professionals working in water and wastewater treatment.

Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2016 in the subject Engineering - Chemical Engineering, grade: 87, Moi University, language: English, abstract: This degree thesis studied the viability of treating molasses waste water using a combination of chitosan and activated carbon. Chitosan is obtained by deacetylation of chitin and is an important polymer in water treatment. Activated carbon is a powerful absorbent that is used in filtration. Effects of temperature, time, oh and agitation was studied. The research pointed important leads to embracing chitosan in waste water treatment. Kenya is a major sugar producer with a sugar production output of 591,658 tonnes. The sugar industry encompasses sugar refining which yields molasses used in molasses distilleries to produce ethanol. The molasses distillery produces distillery waste known as spent wash which has a high BOD/COD, bad odor and brown color. The high BOD/COD can be removed by conventional means such as aerobic and anaerobic digesters, but it is this brown caramelized compounds known as melanoidins that must be removed by unconventional means since they are recalcitrant and difficult to biodegrade biologically. This project aims to explore options of removing recalcitrant compounds in molasses waste water by adsorption process using powdered activated carbon and chitosan a biopolymer derived from chitin. Sugarcane molasses is the by-product of the sugar production industry which are generated during sugar production. Sugarcane molasses contains 50% fermentable sugar is dark brown, putrid and viscous liquid. Sugarcane molasses is a feedstock for ethanol production and is used in a ratio of 1:1 for fermentation and purification of spirit. The product collected as bottom products form spent wash which is the major constituent of molasses waste water. Properties of molasses include high acidity, strong odor, coloring pigments due to presence of melanoidins, metal sulfides and phenolics giving it brown color. Spent wash is one of the serious pollution problems of countries producing alcohol from fermentation and subsequent distillation of cane molasses. According to distillery spent wash is characterized as one of the caramelized and recalcitrant wastes containing extremely high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), inorganic solids and low in pH 1-2. The post methanation distillery effluent produced from treatment is characterized by high BOD, COD, intense brown colour due to presence of melanoidin pigments and high levels of salts and nutrient rich.

Book excerpt: Physical and chemical characteristics of wastewaters generated by typical field laundries, showers, and kitchens were compiled. Previous investigations of the use of carbon and polymers in the treatment of wastewaters with characteristics similar to those generated at military bases were surveyed and assessed. Laboratory investigations were conducted to optimize the controlling parameters of a wastewater treatment system involving powdered carbon adsorption, polymer coagulation and diatomite filtration. The mechanisms of the treatment system were also researched and presented. Analytical studies were conducted to develop the methods and a field test kit necessary for determining the nature and concentration of pollutants likely to be present in wastewater generated at field laundries, showers, and kitchens. This book was released on 1990 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is commonly used in drinking water treatment plants to control taste and odor, and it is available to remove synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) that must be controlled to meet drinking water standards. The objective of this study was to show how the adsorptive properties of PAC could more effectively be used in both conventional and unconventional treatment processes to control organic compounds. A major finding of this study involved the competitive effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on the the adsorption of organic compounds on activated carbon. Isotherm data show that the adsorption capacity of a compound is highly dependent on the initial compound concentration due to the competition of NOM for adsorption sites on the surface of the carbon. The equilibrium carbon capacity at a certain aqueous concentration decreases with decreasing initial organic compound concentration in the isotherm test when the initial NOM concentration is constant. An easy-to-use method was developed in this study to determine the isotherm of an organic compound when present in natural water at any initial concentration. The method approximates the complex mixture of NOM as a single compound referred to as the equivalent background compound (EBC). The initial concentration and single solute isotherm constants of the EBC are solved for based on the NOM's competitive effect on the adsorption of the organic compound on activated carbon, and these data can be used to accurately predict the adsorption capacity for conditions of relevance in operating plants. The performance of PAC in a floc-blanket reactor (FBR) for the adsorption of TCP, NOM and trichloroethylene (TCE) from natural water was investigated. Laboratory and field data were collected. PAC residence times as high as 30 hrs can be achieved in the floc blanket under laboratory conditions. Comparison of the PAC adsorption capacity in the reactor to the equilibrium adsorption capacity of TCP, TCE, and NOM in central Illinois groundwater and surface water showed that full utilization of the adsorption capacity of the carbon can be achieved with such high residence times. However, the PAC performance has to be compared to an isotherm conducted with an initial SOC concentration comparable to the SOC concentration in the influent to the reactor. This is due to the finding of decreasing isotherm capacity with decreasing initial concentration.
