Book excerpt: Long range photoinduced electron transfer between electron donor and acceptor groups is of considerable current interest in terms of strategies for artificial photosynthesis and studies regarding the redox properties of proteins. As part of an extensive study of long range electron transfer involving biopolymers, we have carried out this year investigations of the assembly of electron transfer agents in a system of model short peptides. Also studied is a polyelectrolyte that can adopt a helical conformation when electrostatically complexed with organic dye counter-ions. The principal interest in these systems has to do with the well ordered secondary structures adopted by peptide polymers, and the capabilities for synthetic modification of peptide side chains and end groups with chromophores or electroactive substituents. The present report gives a brief account of the following elements of work related to photochemical electron transfer themes: (1) the synthesis and photochemical characterization of chromophore-bound peptides and amino acid model compounds based on the amino acids, tryptophan and the spacer residue, alanine (Ala); (2) the study of binding of the cationic organic dye to a peptide electrolyte, for which cooperative dye loading and helix formation is important; and (3) completion of the synthesis of a new series of acridinium chromophores that have rod-like'' arrangements of inked aryl rings for assembly of electron donor-acceptor systems that will exhibit especially long lived charge separation.

Book excerpt: Electron transfer reactions are of great importance to nearly every subdiscipline of chemistry. The simple transfer of a single electron has been shown repeatedly to be a common activating mode for organic, inorganic, and biological molecules, and the very ubiquity of such reactions has guaranteed that their investigation would involve the most fundamental questions of modern chemistry. The fact that photoexcitation induces enhanced redox reactivity via electron transfer also provides a convenient method for experimentally testing theoretical predictions regarding structural and energetic effects. As can be seen from the very size of this work there is a great deal known about photoinduced electron transfer reactions and the editors have tried to capture the diversity and excitement inherent in this broad field. The reader will find contributions from theorists and experimentalists, from organic and inorganic chemists, from the perspective of the synthetic and mechanistic viewpoint. Some contributions are fundamental basic research, while others clearly show practical applications of these principles. These volumes are intended to serve a joint purpose: as a reference resource and an introductory overview to the diverse research accomplished via photoexcitation of electron donor-acceptor systems. The information is organized in four parts. The first deals with the theoretical and conceptual factors which influence electron transfer. The second covers experimental methodology and medium effects. The third and fourth deal with reactivity, with most organic transformation being addressed in Part C and most inorganic reactions covered in Part D. Each part thus provides an overview of typical reactions observed for these classes of compounds. Part D also provides examples of photoinduced electron transfer in current use in important applications. There is of course a significant interdependence between the four parts. Subject, chemical, and author citation indices appear at the end of each of Parts A, B and C, and comprehensive indices are included in Part D.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devoted exclusively to the basic theories, concepts and applications of light-initiated electron transfer processes, Fundamentals of Photoinduced Electron Transfer is the first book to deliver an introductory-level account of this highly active research area in a concise and easy-to-follow pedagogical manner. No prior knowledge of photochemistry is assumed or required. The author introduces essential background information on photochemistry and electrochemistry and presents a systematic account of the photoinduced electron transfer process. He carefully explains the fundamental thermodynamic equation governing the photoinduced electron, explores the diverse realm of electron photochemistry reactions and provides a survey of today's most important applications. Coverage also features discussion on classical and nonclassical theories to faster insight on a host of underlying molecular and environmental factors. Novel applications such as solar energy conversion, artificial photosynthesis, semiconductor technology, organized assemblies, and molecular electronic devices are described in appropriate detail. Fundamentals of Photoinduced Electron-Transfer is of special value as both a learning tool and working reference in photochemistry, physical chemistry, molecular physics, spectroscopy and electrochemistry.
