Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Origins: Or the Problems of Knowledge, of Being and of Duty IT is due to my readers that I should explain how I was led to enter on the discussion of the philosophical and scientific questions of the day. At the time when I was preparing the revision of my History of the first three Centuries of the Church, I was struck, more than I had ever been before, with the increasing vehemence of the attacks made, not only on Christian theism, but on the very foundations of spiritual religion. If we are to believe the men who come forward as the recognised organs of the scientific world, we must conclude that all that has been afi'irmed by the disciples of the Gospel and the philosophers who believe in a God, in the soul, in a future life, in the morality of duty, is but an empty dream. Our aspirations after a higher world are, to use the figure of one of this school, but as dead leaves whirled aloft into the air, which fall back upon the hand that flung them. Everything is to be reduced to energy, ever transmuted yet ever the same. That which we take to be thought and consciousness is nothing more than a combination of associated sensations. Ai though these oracular assertions did not for one moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Search for Life's Origins by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Search for Life's Origins written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of planetary biology and chemical evolution draws together experts in astronomy, paleobiology, biochemistry, and space science who work together to understand the evolution of living systems. This field has made exciting discoveries that shed light on how organic compounds came together to form self-replicating molecules-the origin of life. This volume updates that progress and offers recommendations on research programs-including an ambitious effort centered on Mars-to advance the field over the next 10 to 15 years. The book presents a wide range of data and research results on these and other issues: The biogenic elements and their interaction in the interstellar clouds and in solar nebulae. Early planetary environments and the conditions that lead to the origin of life. The evolution of cellular and multicellular life. The search for life outside the solar system. This volume will become required reading for anyone involved in the search for life's beginnings-including exobiologists, geoscientists, planetary scientists, and U.S. space and science policymakers.

Book Synopsis Conceptual Issues in Modern Human Origins Research by : Geoffrey A. Clark
Download or read book Conceptual Issues in Modern Human Origins Research written by Geoffrey A. Clark and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While those who study human origins now agree that the evolution of modern human form extends back much further in time than the evolution of modern human behavior, they disagree sharply as to how to interpret the substantive data. Two fundamentally incommensurate interpretations of our origins, the "Replacement" camp and the "Continuity" camp, have now emerged out of pre-existing models and theories that go back to the last quarter of the 19th century. This book contends that these positions are based on radically different biases and assumptions about what the remote human past was like. The purpose of this volume is to examine those conceptual differences, not to arrive at a consensus, but rather to explore the reasons why a consensus might never be possible.
Book Synopsis Studies in Language Origins by : Jan Wind
Download or read book Studies in Language Origins written by Jan Wind and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of language origin has fascinated people for years. Traditionally, humanists like linguists and philosophers attempted to solve it with limited success. In the last decades, however, the sciences have begun to study the same question seemingly with more success. This book is the result of the activities of a group of scholars, members of the Language Origins Society, who approach the problem not only from the viewpoint of linguistics, but also from that of anatomy, physiology, social sciences, physical anthropology, paleoanthropology, paleontology, comparative zoology, general biology, ethology, evolutionary biology and psychology. The volume thus clearly reflects the interdisciplinary approach the Language Origins Society is advocating. Since this book is the first of a series meant for the general scholar, it attempts to avoid specialist jargon. Hence it is equally useful for student courses in linguistics, social sciences, communication science, ethology, evolutionary biology and speech therapy.
Book Synopsis The Social Studies Curriculum by : E. Wayne Ross
Download or read book The Social Studies Curriculum written by E. Wayne Ross and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of The Social Studies Curriculum thoroughly updates the definitive overview of the primary issues teachers face when creating learning experiences for students in social studies. By connecting the diverse elements of the social studies curriculum—history education, civic, global, and social issues—the book offers a unique and critical perspective that separates it from other texts in the field. This edition includes new work on race, gender, sexuality, critical multiculturalism, visual culture, moral deliberation, digital technologies, teaching democracy, and the future of social studies education. In an era marked by efforts to standardize curriculum and teaching, this book challenges the status quo by arguing that social studies curriculum and teaching should be about uncovering elements that are taken for granted in our everyday experiences, and making them the target of inquiry.
