The results from the PWA confirm the existence of a 0/sup +/ kappa (1490) and propose the existence of a second scalar meson resonance, the 0/sup +/ kappa' (1900). Structure in the P-wave amplitude indicates resonance behavior in the mass region near 1700 MeV. In two of the four ambiguous solutions for the mass region above 1800 MeV, there is strong evidence for another P-wave resonant structure near 2100 MeV. The observed strange meson resonances are found to have a natural interpretation in terms of states predicted by the quark model. In particular, the mass splittings of the leading trajectory natural spin-parity strange meson states and the mass splittings between the spin-orbit triplet states are discussed. 59 figures, 17 tables.

Book excerpt: The status of our programmatic study of states containing a strange quark is briefly reviewed. An 11 GeV/c K−p experiment run on the LASS spectrometer at SLAC is discussed and preliminary results presented for several inelastic channels based on approximately one half of the available data sample. In addition, new results utilizing the full statistics of the experiment are presented for the elastic K−.pi./sup +/ channel from the K−.pi./sup +/n final state. The well established leading K*(890), K*(1435), and K*(1780) resonances are observed, and clear evidence is presented for a new J/sup p/ = 4/sup +/ resonance at approx. 2070 MeV. Preliminary results from an energy independent partial wave analysis of these data are presented which display unambiguous evidence for resonant structure in the non-leading 0/sup +/ and 1− waves.

Book excerpt: A model incorporating K* resonance contributions and simple backgrounds is shown to quantitatively reproduce the mass dependence of the partial wave amplitudes governing the production and decay of the anti K°..pi ... pi..− system. A fit of this model to these amplitudes confirms the resonance interpretations of the well-established 1 K1(1400), the 2+ K2*(1430), the 3− K3*(1780), and the less well-known 1− states, the K*(1410) and the K*(1790). The 4+ amplitudes are shown to be consistent with the production and decay of the 4+ K4*(2060). A second 2+ enhancement at a mass of approx. 1.95 GeV/c2 can be interpreted as resonant and may be the radial excitation of the K2*(1430) or the triplet partner of the K4*(2060). New measurements of the masses, widths and branching ratios of these states are given, and the implications of these data for the spectroscopy of the nonstrange meson sector are discussed.

The data come from a high sensitivity study (4.1 ev/nb) of K−p interactions at 11 GeV/c using the LASS spectrometer at SLAC. The complete leading orbitally-excited K* series up through J/sup P/ = 5− and a substantial number of the expected underlying states are observed decaying into K−.pi., anti K3°.pi.pi.−, and K eta final states, and new measurements are made of their masses, widths, and branching ratios. Production of strangeonium states via hypercharge exchange is observed into K3°K3°, K−K+, and K3°K/sup + -/.pi./sup - +/ final states. The leading orbitally-excited phi series through J/sup P/ = 3− is clearly seen and evidence is presented for additional high spin structure in the 2.2 GeV/c2 region. No f2(1720) is observed. The K3°K/sup + -/.pi./sup - +/ spectrum is dominated by 1/sup +/(K* anti K + anti K* K) production in the region below 1.6 GeV/c2. These results are compared with data on the same systems produced by different production mechanisms. 12 refs., 28 figs.

The SLAC 15'' rapid cycling bubble chamber, operating at 20 cycles per second, was triggered by detecting fast forward neutrons in an optical spark chamber and scintillation counter array downstream. Following two-component duality arguments, Jacob and Weyers and Rosner have suggested backward scattering processes as a favored mode for exotic meson resonance production. Upper limits of the order of one microbarn are reported for the production of narrow exotic meson resonances with masses less than or equal to 3 GeV and which could decay into even G-parity states: .pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/, .pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/.pi.−, .pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/.pi.−.pi.−, and p anti p.pi./sup +/.pi./sup +/. The mass resolution in the above channels varied from 5 to 30 MeV over the mass range for the most restrictive sample of events. The statistical significance of the data corresponds to 30 events per microbarn. Evidence for forward N* and rho° production are also reported. The main features of the data can be simulated by a Monte Carlo model which incorporates Lorentz-invariant phase space modified by exponential transverse momentum damping on each final state particle and, in addition, takes into account the geometrical constraints and trigger requirements of the experiment.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a study of strange vector meson production, [open-quotes]leading particle[close-quotes] effect and a first direct measurement of the strangeness suppression parameter in hadronic decays of the neutral electroweak boson, Z[sup 0]. The measurements were performed in e[sup+]e[sup -] collisions at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) with the SLC Large Detector (SLD) experiment. A new generation particle ID system, the SLD Cerenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID) is used to discriminate kaons from pions, enabling the reconstruction of the vector mesons over a wide momentum range. The inclusive production rates of[phi] and K*[sup 0] and the differential rates versus momentum were measured and are compared with those of other experiments and theoretical predictions. The high longitudinal polarisation of the SLC electron beam is used in conjunction with the electroweak quark production asymmetries to separate quark jets from antiquark jets. K*[sup 0] production is studied separately in these samples, and the results show evidence for the[open-quotes]leading particle[close-quotes] effect. The difference between K*[sup 0] production rates at high momentum in quark and antiquark jets yields a first direct measurement of strangeness suppression in jet fragmentation.

Results from an amplitude analysis of strange meson final states in K/sup /minus//p .-->. /ovr K0/.pi./sup /minus//p interactions are presented. The data derive from a 4 event/nb exposure of the LASS (large Aperture Superconducting Solenoid) spectrometer to an 11 GeV/c K/sup /minus// beam. The data sample consists of (approximately)100,000 vents distributed over the Dalitz plot of the channel. The process is observed to be dominated by the production and decay of natural spin-parity (J/sup P/ = 1/sup /minus//,2,3/sup /minus//, /hor ellipsis/) strange meson states. The data can be understood in terms of a simple model in which the resonant /ovr K*−/ are produced predominantly via natural parity exchange in the t channel. The leading K*(890), K2*(1430), and K*(1780) resonances are clearly observed and measured, and the underlying spectroscopy is also extracted. Indications of higher mass resonance production are also shown. The observed properties of these states are used to confront current models of quark spectroscopy in strange meson systems. 94 refs., 96 figs., 23 tabs.
