Book Synopsis STUDY OF HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOCOUPLES. by : B. Forrest Hall (Jr)
Download or read book STUDY OF HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOCOUPLES. written by B. Forrest Hall (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials suitable for use as components of thermocouples for temperature measurement in a graphite environment were investigated. The performance of the W/W26%/Re thermocouple was evaluated up to 2500C in the presence of graphite under different atmospheric conditions. Thermoelectric effects were associated with carbon-metal reactions as revealed by metallographic studies or test materials. The behavior of the thermocouple was found to be directly dependent on the carburizing potential of the atmosphere surrounding the wires. Temperature indications were found to be reliable within at least =2% for up to 100 hours at 2400C in argon at atmospheric pressure in a graphite furnace. However, reducing the pressure or replacing the argon with hydrogen or a hydrocarbon gas caused a decrease in the thermocouple output as a function of time and temperature. This was interpreted as the formation of intermediate junctions of Tungsten: Tungsten Carbide and Tungsten-26% Rhenium: Tungsten Carbide in the respective wires. Several thermocouple prototypes were constructed and were found to have features that could be useful in thermocouples for a graphite environment. (Author).

Book Synopsis Meteorological Measurements and Instrumentation by : Giles Harrison
Download or read book Meteorological Measurements and Instrumentation written by Giles Harrison and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamental scientific principles underlying high quality instrumentation used for environmental measurements. It discusses a wide range of in situ sensors employed in practical environmental monitoring and, in particular, those used in surface based measurement systems. It also considers the use of weather balloons to provide a wealth of upper atmosphere data. To illustrate the technologies in use it includes many examples of real atmospheric measurements in typical and unusual circumstances, with a discussion of the electronic signal conditioning, data acquisition considerations and data processing principles necessary for reliable measurements. This also allows the long history of atmospheric measurements to be placed in the context of the requirements of modern climate science, by building the physical science appreciation of the instrumental record and looking forward to new and emerging sensor and recording technologies.

Book Synopsis Thermal Sensors, by : Gerard C. M. Meijer
Download or read book Thermal Sensors, written by Gerard C. M. Meijer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-10-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal Sensors is intended as a comprehensive and accessible reference for designers and users of thermal sensors. Many different physical quantities can be converted easily and accurately into temperature differences using thermal techniques. These temperature differences can be detected with temperature and temperature-difference sensors. In a thermal sensor the thermal converter and the temperature sensor are combined in a single accurate device. This book gives an overview and deals with the design aspects of thermal and temperature sensors, with an emphasis on sensors based on silicon technology. The temperature sensors described are based on the use of various types of sensitive elements, such as platinum resistors, thermistors and special integrated circuits. The thermal sensors described include flow, conductivity, infrared, vacuum, humidity and calorimetric sensors, and ac-dc converters, thus providing a comprehensive overview of all thermal sensors, with practical examples of each type.

Download or read book NASA Contributions to Development of Special-purpose Thermocouples. A Survey written by Calvin Eugene Moeller and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern industry the thermocouple plays an important role in temperature instrumentation. The increasing need for temperature measurements in extreme environments has produced significant advancements in thermo couple technology; much of this technology has come from research in the aerospace and atomic energy areas. This survey reviews developments resulting from work performed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its contractors. The main thrust of the survey is to encourage non-aerospace applications of the results of aerospace research.
