Book excerpt: Due to the decline of current conventional oil and gas reservoirs, the development of unconventional resources has received great attention in recent years (World Energy Outlook 2012). Shale, formations that are considered as both source rocks and reservoirs, play a significant role in the USA's hydrocarbon production (EIA 2019). Hence, understanding the effective and efficient development of unconventional resources is of crucial importance. Nevertheless, there are still numerous technical challenges related to fluid transport in shale. The nanoporous system of shale formations has relatively low porosity and ultralow permeability that has considerable influence on fluid transport by advection and diffusion (Javadpour et al., 2007). Moreover, cracks and natural fractures are also very common in shale and they play a very important role in production. Natural cracks and fractures contribute directly to storage and permeability, and they can interact with hydraulic fracturing treatments (Gale et al., 2010). The heterogeneous pore and network system together with the significant variation in mineral composition raise challenges for the understanding of fluid transport through shale. Mechanistic understanding of fluid transport in shale reservoirs is crucial for future production forecasts and for better field planning and development. This research work bridges the gap in understanding the storage and transport mechanisms of unconventional resources. Various experimental, simulation and data analysis techniques were applied, as follows. First, simulation of adsorption properties using statistical modelling based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) techniques for CO2 adsorption in clay systems was performed. Significant CO2 is predicted to adsorb to clay. Results from simulation and experiment are compared to further investigate the adsorption properties of gas shale and to predict the adsorbed phase densities as a function of temperature, pressure, and pore size. It was observed that the simulated CO2 adsorption for the clay is smaller compared to organic matter. This result shows the same trend as the experimental measurement. At 60 bar and 80 °C, the CO2 adsorption in a 2 nm pore in clay is around 2 mmol/cm3; while in the 2 nm pore in the organic matter, the CO2 adsorption is around 13 mmol/cm3. Second, we carried out experiments to probe liquid behaviour in shale samples by X-ray CT imaging. CT scans were taken continuously after injecting water and water tracer into the core. From the change of CT signal of the shale core over time as the water flows through the porous medium, the water flow path is visualized. From CT image analysis, when injecting water into the dry core, a water front was observed to move along the core over time. The CT signal of the entire core increased substantially after breakthrough indicating that water preferably flowed through larger pore space and then transported into the matrix. Third, following on the success of imaging liquid movement in shale, experiments were carried out to visualize and study liquid diffusion in sandstone, carbonate, and two shale samples. The diffusion study is designed to be purely concentration driven with no pressure difference applied to the system. An effective diffusion coefficient was calculated by fitting the experimentally measured concentration profile data and analytical solutions from Fick's law. Then, sample tortuosity was analyzed based on the effective diffusion. The sandstone and carbonate had tortuosities of 1.34 and 1.36, respectively, in agreement with literature. The shale samples had tortuosity in excess of 10 indicating substantial geometrical complexity of shale porous networks. Finally, a data-driven deep learning approach was developed to infer the permeability distribution of shale samples. Through analyzing flow images of the shale sample from CT scans, a convolutional neural network model was trained to calculate the average and local permeability of the sample. Compared to traditional permeability measurement and calculation, this method presents a local 3-D permeability map of the shale and provides valuable information to understand the nature of shale and their production capabilities.

At present, conventional research on the seepage theory of fracturing horizontal wells in shale gas reservoirs are not very systematic, and the comprehensive consideration of adsorption, desorption and diffusion in the seepage model, especially in the linear flow model, is rarely given. Comprehensive consideration of adsorption, desorption and diffusion, using computer programming knowledge, such as shale gas reservoir fracturing horizontal well trilinear flow and five linear flow model, to research the shale gas reservoir fracturing horizontal well pressure dynamic features, provide theoretical basis for the development of shale gas. This paper mainly completes the following work: (1) Conduct in-depth research and analysis of a large number of literatures, analyze the characteristics of shale gas reservoir, and summarize its production and migration mechanism. (2) The continuity differential equation of each zone of the conventional trilinear flow and five linear flow model is derived, which provides the basic theoretical basis for the establishment of the trilinear flow and five linear flow model of shale gas reservoir. (3) Trilinear flow models and five linear flow models were established for fracturing horizontal Wells in single-medium shale gas reservoirs, and corresponding ii pressure characteristic curves were drawn to divide the flow stages. The influence of parameters such as adsorption and desorption coefficient, apparent permeability coefficient, fracture and reservoir conductivity, fracture spacing and pressure conductivity coefficient on the characteristic curve was analyzed. Trilinear flow model and five linear flow model are compared. (4) Trilinear flow models and five linear flow models are established for fracturing horizontal Wells in shale gas reservoirs with dual media. The models include: fracture seepage-matrix pseudo diffusion model, fracture seepage-matrix unsteady diffusion model. The corresponding pressure characteristic curve is drawn and the flow stage is divided. The effects of parameters such as elastic storage capacity ratio, interfacial flow coefficient, adsorption-desorption coefficient, fracture spacing and reservoir boundary length on the characteristic curve were analyzed. Trilinear flow model and five linear flow model are compared. (5) The application of the established model in well test interpretation and analysis of the measured data verifies the practicability of the theoretical model in this paper.

Book excerpt: Accurate production analysis and forecasting of well’s performance is essential to estimate reserves and to develop strategies to optimize hydrocarbon recovery. In the case of shale resources, this task is particularly challenging for the following reasons. First, these reservoirs show long periods of transient linear flow in which the reservoir volume grows continuously over time acting without bounds. Second, variable operating conditions cause scatter and abrupt production changes. Finally, the presence of competing flow mechanisms, heterogeneities, and multi-phase flow effects make the production analysis more complex. Detailed numerical flow models can address the complexities present in unconventional reservoirs. However, these models suffer from the following limitations: (a) the uncertainty of many input parameters, (b) susceptibility to overfit the data, (c) lack of interpretability of their results, and (d) high computational expense. This dissertation provides new and simple mechanistic and statistical modeling tools suitable to improve the production analysis and forecasts of shale reservoirs. This work presents solutions to the following research problems. This study develops and applies a new two-phase (oil and gas) flow suitable to history-match and forecast production of tight-oil and gas-condensate reservoirs producing below bubble- and dew-point conditions, respectively. It solves flow equations in dimensionless form and uses only two scaling parameters (hydrocarbon in-place and characteristic time) to history-match production. For this reason, the model requires minimal time to run making it ideal for decline curve analysis on large numbers of wells. This research illustrates the development and application of a Bayesian framework that generates probabilistic production history matches and forecasts to address the uncertainty of model’s estimates. This work uses an adaptative Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to guarantee a fast convergence of the Markov chains by accounting for the correlation among model’s parameters. In addition, this study calibrates the model’s probabilistic estimates using hindcasting and evaluates the inferences robustness using posterior predictive checks. This dissertation examines the problem of evaluation, ranking and selection, and averaging of models for improved probabilistic production history-matching and forecasting. We illustrate the assessment of the predictive accuracy of four rate-time models using the expected log predictive density (elpd) accuracy metric along with cross-validation techniques (leave-one-out and leave-future-out). The elpd metric provides a measure of out-of-sample predictive accuracy of a model’s posterior distribution. The application of Pareto smoothed importance sampling (PSIS) allows to use cross-validation techniques without the need of refitting Bayesian models. Using the Bayesian Bootstrap, this work generates a model ensemble that weighs each individual model based on the accuracy of its predictions. Finally, this research applies a novel deconvolution technique to incorporate changing operating conditions into rate-time analysis of tight-oil and shale gas reservoirs. Furthermore, this work quantifies the errors and discusses the limitations of the standard rate-transient analysis technique used in production analysis of unconventional reservoirs: rate normalization and material balance time

Book excerpt: The state of the art of modeling fluid flow in shale gas reservoirs is dominated by dual porosity models that divide the reservoirs into matrix blocks that significantly contribute to fluid storage and fracture networks which principally control flow capacity. However, recent extensive microscopic studies reveal that there exist massive micro- and nano- pore systems in shale matrices. Because of this, the actual flow mechanisms in shale reservoirs are considerably more complex than can be simulated by the conventional dual porosity models and Darcy's Law. Therefore, a model capturing multiple pore scales and flow can provide a better understanding of complex flow mechanisms occurring in these reservoirs. Through the use of a unique simulator, this research work establishes a micro-scale multiple-porosity model for fluid flow in shale reservoirs by capturing the dynamics occurring in three separate porosity systems: organic matter (mainly kerogen); inorganic matter; and natural fractures. Inorganic and organic portions of shale matrix are treated as sub-blocks with different attributes, such as wettability and pore structures. In the organic matter or kerogen, gas desorption and diffusion are the dominant physics. Since the flow regimes are sensitive to pore size, the effects of smaller pores (mainly nanopores and picopores) and larger pores (mainly micropores and nanopores) in kerogen are incorporated in the simulator. The separate inorganic sub-blocks mainly contribute to the ability to better model dynamic water behavior. The multiple porosity model is built upon a unique tool for simulating general multiple porosity systems in which several porosity systems may be tied to each other through arbitrary transfer functions and connectivities. This new model will allow us to better understand complex flow mechanisms and in turn to extend simulation to the reservoir scale including hydraulic fractures through upscaling techniques. During recent decades, the mechanisms of shale gas storage and transport were gradually recognized. Gas desorption was also realized and quantitatively described. Models and approaches special for estimating rate decline and recovery of shale gas wells were developed. As the strategy of the horizontal well with multiple transverse fractures (MTFHW) was discovered and its significance to economic shale gas production was understood, rate decline and pressure transient analysis models for this type of well were developed to reveal the well behavior. In this thesis, we considered a 0́Triple-porosity/Dual-permeability0́+ model and performed sensitivity studies to understand long term pressure drawdown behavior of MTFHWs. A key observation from this study is that the early linear flow regime before interfracture interference gives a relationship between summed fracture half-length and permeability, from which we can estimate either when the other is known. We studied the impact of gas desorption on the time when the pressure perturbation caused by production from adjacent transference fractures (fracture interference time) and programmed an empirical method to calculate a time shift that can be used to qualify the gas desorption impact on long term production behavior. We focused on the field case Well A in New Albany Shale. We estimated the EUR for 33 wells, including Well A, using an existing analysis approach. We applied a unified BU-RNP method to process the one-year production/pressure transient data and performed PTA to the resulting virtual constant-rate pressure drawdown. Production analysis was performed meanwhile. Diagnosis plots for PTA and RNP analysis revealed that only the early linear flow regime was visible in the data, and permeability was estimated both from a model match and from the relationship between fracture half-length and permeability. Considering gas desorption, the fracture interference will occur only after several centuries. Based on this result, we recommend a well design strategy to increase the gas recovery factor by decreasing the facture spacing. The higher EUR of Well A compared to the vertical wells encourages drilling more MTFHWs in New Albany Shale.

The technology requires pumping large amount of fracture-fluids and proppant into the target formation at high pressure. The fracture-fluid will then be recovered as aqueous phase during the flowback periods after well shut-in, which can be treated and reused. Sweet spot identification and efficient fracture-fluid flowback management are keys requirement for sustainable and economic development of Marcellus Shale, which can be benefited greatly by optimizing drilling and completion practices, including accurate fracture-fluids flowback prediction. In this work, a systematic study of the geology and engineering factors that influence fracture-fluids flowback, water production, and gas recovery was developed. The complex correlations between gas production and fracture-fluids flowback and produced water provide more understanding about flow mechanism in shale gas. The results suggest that the numbers of hydraulic fracturing stages and well lateral length have significant influence on gas production. The shut-in time and injected proppant volume have the most influence on fracture-fluids flowback. The correlations between gas and fracture-fluid flowback and produced water were different under certain geological conditions and time periods. These knowledges from previous results were used to develop economic analysis regional scale.This work not only will provide the new insights about shale gas well production and fracture-fluid flowback, but also provide a new idea for how to effectively analyze limited field recorded data and to identify the true story behind data.

Because of its complex pore structure and reservoir characteristics, fluid properties and mechanisms of fluid flow are always difficult but important topics which need to be recognized and described. It is known that properties of fluid in the shale reservoir will be affected by confined environment, and fluid flow in shale reservoir does not always follow Darcy's Law such as turbulent flow in the shale gas reservoir. Consequently, it is a significant study for calculating modified properties and describing fluid flow mechanisms within shale reservoirs. Flash calculation is the first step to characterize reservoir fluid properties because shale reservoir is a multi-phase fluid system. This study primarily considers reservoir as a two-phase system, which includes gas and liquid phases based on the prevailing composition of hydrocarbons in studied shale reservoir formation. Comparing with conventional phase behavior studies for bulk phase fluid, the confined flash calculation for shale reservoir fluids considers the shifts of critical properties of components and the impacts of capillary pressure. It determines the bubble-point pressure and dew point pressure of shale fluids at specific temperatures, composition of gas/liquid phases, and the amount of each phase at equilibrium. The obtained results are compared with those results generated by CMGTM Winprop module (Version 2019.10, Computer Modelling Group Limited, Canada) to verify the accuracy of program from the study. Additionally, with those calculated individual composition in each phase, the assessment of several important properties of fluid such as density, viscosity and compressibility of vapor/liquid phases are performed. Based on the calculated results, critical properties shift and capillary pressure prove to be two important aspects which do affect the flash calculations and physical properties determination. Therefore, they should be considered in flash calculation for shale reservoir fluid at confinement effects. In addition, a case study of transient fluid flow which is influenced by phase behavior and confined effects in the shale formation is developed and solved. Starting from general diffusivity equation, an expression of dimensionless bottomhole pressure of shale gas reservoir with dimensionless time in the scenario of infinite outer boundary and vertical well production is constructed and then solved eventually by using several mathematical approaches (Laplace transform, Fourier transform and Stehfest inversion). Furthermore, within the restricted space, fracture pressures and production rates are calculated in the different pore sizes. Through this study, at the confined space, effects of confinement (critical properties shift and capillary pressure) at the shale reservoir apparently influence flash calculation, phase equilibrium, bubble point and dew point pressures estimation, physical property evaluations of fluid and transient fluid flow analysis.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this dissertation is to quantify petrophysical properties of conventional and unconventional reservoirs using a mechanistic approach. Unconventional transport mechanisms are described from the pore to the reservoir scale to examine their effects on macroscopic petrophysical properties in hydrocarbon-bearing organic shale. Petrophysical properties at the pore level are quantified with a new finite-difference method. A geometrical approximation is invoked to describe the interstitial space of grid-based images of porous media. Subsequently, a generalized Laplace equation is derived and solved numerically to calculate fluid pressure and velocity distributions in the interstitial space. The resulting macroscopic permeability values are within 6% of results obtained with the Lattice-Boltzmann method after performing grid refinements. The finite-difference method is on average six times faster than the Lattice-Boltzmann method. In the next step, slip flow and Knudsen diffusion are added to the pore-scale method to take into account unconventional flow mechanisms in hydrocarbon-bearing shale. The effect of these mechanisms is appraised with a pore-scale image of Eagle Ford shale as well as with several grain packs. It is shown that neglecting slip flow in samples with pore-throat sizes in the nanometer range could result in errors as high as 2000% when estimating permeability in unconventional reservoirs. A new fluid percolation model is proposed for hydrocarbon-bearing shale. Electrical conductivity is quantified in the presence of kerogen, clay, hydrocarbon, water, and the Stern-diffuse layer in grain packs as well as in the Eagle Ford shale pore-scale image. The pore-scale model enables a critical study of the [delta]LogR evaluation method commonly used with gas-bearing shale to assess kerogen concentration. A parallel conductor model is introduced based on Archie's equation for water conductivity in pores and a parallel conductive path for the Stern-diffuse layer. Additionally, a non-destructive core analysis method is proposed for estimating input parameters of the parallel conductor model in shale formations. A modified reservoir model of single-phase, compressible fluid is also developed to take into account the following unconventional transport mechanisms: (a) slip flow and Knudsen diffusion enhancement in apparent permeability, (b) Langmuir desorption as a source of gas generation at kerogen surfaces, and (c) the diffusion mechanism in kerogen as a gas supply to adsorbed layers. The model includes an iterative verification method of surface mass balance to ensure real-time desorption-adsorption equilibrium with gas production. Gas desorption from kerogen surfaces and gas diffusion in kerogen are the main mechanisms responsible for higher-than-expected production velocities commonly observed in shale-gas reservoirs. Slip flow and Knudsen diffusion marginally enhance production rates by increasing permeability during production.
