Book excerpt: This program focuses on the need to improve the resistance of high-strength steels to hydrogen embrittlement of hydrogen stress cracking. Variations in heat treatment and modifications in alloy composition of electroslag remelted 4340 steel at 53 HRC were extensively explored. Target goals were established in terms of a threshold stress intensity parameter, KIscc for open circuit potential conditions, designated KIhem for cathodic charging conditions under stress during test, which were the primary test conditions in this program. In general, all alloy additions improved KIhem. The addition of 0.1% vanadium appears to be the most significant individual modification to ESR 4340 steel in that it alone provides the same gains as the more heavily alloyed ESR 4340 steels. The results must be somewhat qualified because the hardness of ESR 4340V was 50 HRC instead of the intended 53 HRC. Silicon additions of about 1.5% tended to maximize the benefits from alloy modifications. Although within an alloy system the heat treatment effects were monor or secondary relative to alloy additions, the use of an intermediate quench and subzero cooling appeared to maximize the benefits from heat treatment.

Book excerpt: A test program to compare the relative hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of remelted 4340 steel with ESR and VAR methods has been completed. The issue of ESR's susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement arose when unexpected difficulties were experienced with critical control system actuator pistons on the helicopter programs. High strength (above 260 Ksi) 4340 ESR steel is used in these applications because of 4340 ESR's demonstrated superior ballistic tolerance. Three heat treat levels and two grain orientations were evaluated; and three test methods were applied to measure embrittlement susceptibility. A significant reduction in embrittlement susceptibility is associated with lower strength approximately 43 HRC) as compared to high strength approximately 53 HRC) 4340. The short transverse grain direction is more susceptible than the longitudinal direction, and all test methods indicated that VAR is less susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement than ESR. A parallel effort during the test program focused on heat treat distortion difference between ESR and VAR 4340. While a difference in distortion propensity cannot be ruled out on the basis of test results, it can be concluded that such differences between ESR and VAR are small compared to heat treatment parameters affecting distortion. Book excerpt: The effect of heat treatment on irreversible hydrogen trapping was investigated for high strength steels (4340, 18Ni (250), and AerMet 100), alloy K-500, and precipitation-hardened alloys (X-750 and 18Ni (250) steel), with the goal of providing insight into the factors governing the intrinsic susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). A potentiostatic pulse technique was used to determine irreversible trapping constants (k), which were compared with changes in strength and microstructure. Irreversible trapping in AerMet 100 is associated with two types of carbide, depending on the aging temperature. 4340 steel also undergoes a change in its principal type of irreversible trap with decreasing yield strength. The type of heat treatment for alloy K-500 can produce differences in trapping. Annealing increases k considerably, whereas aging has a negligible effect for the annealed alloy but can result in an increase for the unannealed alloy. 18Ni steel and alloy X-750 both show an increase in k with aging. Carbonitride particles provide the principal irreversible traps in the unaged alloys and appear to be one of the principal traps in aged X-750 but not in the aged steel. The order of the k values for AerMet 100, 4340, 18Ni (250), and two previously studied steels --H11 and 18Ni (300)--inversely parallels their threshold stress intensities for stress corrosion cracking. A correlation was found between k and the observed resistance to HE also for annealed/aged and direct-aged alloy K-500, alloys X-750 and 718, and 18Ni (250) steel and alloy 718.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the deleterious effects of hydrogen gas on steel at elevated temperatures and/or pressures. Hydrogen attack on steels is manifest as decarburization, intergranular fissuring, or blistering. These conditions result in lowered tensile strength, ductility, and impact strength. The reaction of hydrogen with iron carbide to form methane is probably the most important chemical reaction involved in the attack on steel by hydrogen. Attack of steel at elevated temperatures and pressures is limited or prevented by the following measures: (1) use of steel alloyed with strong carbide-forming elements, (2) use of liners of resistant alloy steels, and (3) substitution of resistant nonferrous alloys.

Book excerpt: This memorandum introduces the problem of delayed, brittle failures associated with hydrogen in steel, particularly high-strength steel. It is intended to help the steel user determine if he has such a problem. The effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of steel are dealt with, and the behavior of material susceptible to delayed, brittle failure is described. Also, the effects of such factors as strength level, magnitude of applied stress, hydrogen content, steel composition, test temperature, and strain rate on hydrogen embrittlement and the susceptibility to hydrogen-induced, delayed, brittle failure are discussed. Possible sources of hydrogen in steel and the types of tests useful in determining the susceptibility to delayed failure are outlined. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effect of austenitizing conditions on the anisotropic embrittlement of electroslag remelted (ESR) 4340 steel were studied. Increasing austenitzing of temperature from 1550 F to 1750 F had little or no effect on the strength and toughness of ESR melted 4340 steel. Decreasing the quench rate from 1000 F per minute to 500 F per minute had no effect on the strength and toughness. Decreasing the quench rate from 500 F per minute to 100 F per minute had a significant effect on Charpy V-notch toughness. Lower Charpy V-notch toughness associated with the quench rate of 100 F per minute was due to the presence of bainite in the microstructure. The presence of bainite had a small effect on a slow blend fracture toughness. Plate anisotropy was very small in the plane of the plate (longitudinal versus transverse). Properties normal to the plane of the plate were affected drastically. Charpy V-notch toughness was decreased as much as 56% over the values obtained in the longitudinal direction. Reduction in area of the mild notch tensile specimen was decreased as much as 64% in the through-thickness direction when compared to the longitudinal direction. Inclusion clusters were primarily alumina with some calcium present. In all the tests conducted, there was no evidence for anisotropic embrittlement of this material (i.e., intergranular fracture).
