Book excerpt: This volume of the International School of Physics Enrico Fermi is dedicated to Valerio Filippini. He devoted his life to physics. Valerio Filippini was born in Somma Lombardo (Milano) on December 8, 1958. He obtained the Master Degree in Physics at the University of Pavia in 1982, cum laude. After a working parenthesis at an industrial firm, he became Research Physicist of INFN, Sezione di Pavia, in 1988 and was promoted Senior Research Physicist in 1993. He participated to the experiments PS 179 (TOFRADUPP) and PS 201 (Obelix) at LEAR (CERN), FINUDA at LNF and ATHENA at AD (CERN). His outstanding scientific contributions were provided in the OBELIX and FINUDA experiments. Nobody could compete with Filippini in exploiting at best the daily-evoluting performances of the computing tools for the needs of the experiments, both for on-line and off-line purposes. The FINUDA experiment collected physics data immediately after the roll-in thanks to the reliability and simplicity of the on-line system designed and assembled by the physicist. However, he was not only a 'Clavier Physicist' but a complete Scientist: he also leaded the Pavia Group in designing and providing advanced detectors, and in developing mathematical methods for the analysis of the data. His scientific contributions are documented by about 90 publications on refereed international journals, about 100 contributions to International Conferences and Workshops, and 3 invited talks.

Download or read book 30 Years of Bes Physics - Proceedings of the Symposium on 30 Years of Bes Physics written by Changzheng Yuan and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BES, the Beijing Spectrometer, began its first groundbreaking physics run, thirty years ago, in 1989. This is the first high energy physics experiment in China, and has been unique throughout the world for its thorough and extended coverage of the tau and charm energy region. Since then, the BES detector has undergone steady improvements, upgrading to BESII in 1998 and to BESIII in 2008. Over the same period, the collaboration has expanded from 150 members, across 10 institutions in China and the United States, to about 500 members, across 72 institutions and 15 countries. The physics program, too, has extended from light hadron spectroscopy, tau, and charm physics to the discovery of exotic charmonium-like states, precision tests of the Standard Model of particle physics, and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. This special volume collects the proceedings of the symposium held at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing, in celebration of the 30-year span of achievements and progress at the BES, BESII, and BESIII experiments. Written by many leaders of the BES collaborations, these proceedings document the early days of the BES experiments, important milestones, and the future physics program at BESIII.
Book Synopsis The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon by : Fred Jegerlehner
Download or read book The Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon written by Fred Jegerlehner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations.

Download or read book The Bean written by Angel Abusleme and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Linear Collider (ILC), a next generation particle accelerator, will smash electron and positron bunches at up to 500 GeV (1000 GeV after a planned upgrade). The 31-km long collider's experiments will help scientists to understand the fundamental constituents of matter. Located at the ILC detector's forward region, the BeamCal is a highly segmented (> 90,000 channels) calorimeter that will serve three main purposes: ensure hermeticity of the detector for low polar angles, reduce the backscattering from pairs into the detector center, and provide a low-latency signal for beam diagnostics. The BeamCal specifications in terms of radiation tolerance, noise suppression, signal charge, pulse rate and occupancy pose unique challenges for the front-end and readout electronics design. Designed for the 180-nm TSMC mixed-signal technology, The Bean -- BeamCal Instrumentation IC -- is a 32-channel front-end and readout ASIC that will address the BeamCal instrumentation requirements. By employing a charge-sensitive amplifier and a switched-capacitor reset circuit, the Bean will process the input charge signals at the ILC pulse rate. Each channel will have a 10-bit successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter and digital memory for readout purposes. The Bean will also feature a fast feedback adder, capable of providing an 8-bit, low-latency output for beam diagnostics purposes. This work presents the design and characterization of The Bean prototype, a 3-channel ASIC that proves the principle of operation described.
