Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tribute to Charles J. Adams from colleagues and students includes essays on numerous aspects of Islamic civilization, beginning with early Islam down to the modern period. The Qur'ān receives the attention of five authors: Andrew Rippin focuses on references to the pre-Islamic Hanīfs, while Issa Boullata traces poetic citation in Qur'ānic exegesis. Sulami's commentary is discussed by Gerhard Böwering, and Hallaq draws attention to the unique place the Qur'ān occupied in Shātibī's legal theory. Finally, W.C. Smith looks at the Qur'ān from a comparativist perspective. Ulrich Haarmann and Donald P. Little deal, respectively, with the attitudes of medieval Egyptians towards the Pyramids, and the nature of Sūfī institutions under the Mamluks. Mehdi Mohaghegh, Hasan Murad and Paul Walker treat philosophical and theological issues, while Eric Ormsby analyzes the structure of experience in Ghazali. Sajida Alvi explores the religious writings of the eighteenth-century Indian scholar Panīpatī, and Üner Turgay examines Circassian immigration to the Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century. Orthodoxy and aberrancy in the Ithna 'Asharī tradition is the subject of Savory's article, and the notion of literature in Arab and Islamic culture is treated by Wickens. Finally, Bernard Weiss compares Islamic and Western conceptions of law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russians in Iran seeks to challenge the traditional narrative regarding Russian involvement Iran and to show that whilst Russia's historical involvement in Iran is longstanding it is nonetheless much misunderstood. Russia's influence in Iran between 1800 and the middle of the twentieth century is not simply a story of inexorable intrusion and domination: rather, it is a complex and interactive process of mostly indirect control and constructive engagement. Drawing on fresh archival material, the contributors provide a window into the power and influence wielded in Iran not just by the Russian government through it traditional representatives but by Russian nationals operating in Iran in a variety of capacities, including individuals, bankers, and entrepreneurs. Russians in Iran reveals the multifaceted role that Russians have played in Iranian history and provides an original and important contribution to the history and international relations of Iran, Russia and the Middle East.

This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a close study of the Ricote Valley and its famous Sufi Ibn Sab'in. Its purpose is to disclose more of the historical and comparative data. Arab Spaniards have created a glorious human story that lasted for centuries within the scope of the Mediterranean culture. However, a lot of the history of the Ricote Valley is only written in Spanish and still not in English. Andalusian scientists moved from the region of Murcia to the heart of the Islamic world. Their move had quite a deep effect. Among these scientists was the great Sufi philosopher, Muhammad Ibn-'Abdul-Haq known as Ibn- Sab'in (d. 669 H. = 1270 AD), who came from the Ricote Valley. He is the originator of the deep philosophical approach in dealing with highly humanistic Sufi thought, and the author of the magnificent treatise Al-Kalam 'ala Al-Masa'il Al-Siqqilliyya, in which he answered the philosophical questions that Frederick II, the Emperor of Sicily, sent to Muslim scientists in the Mashreq and the Maghreb.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary approach, crucial as it is in most fields of research, proves itself to be unescapable in the study of interactions between the ancient Armenian and Greek worlds and literatures. The volume arises from such an awareness and collects papers presented in a conference which has been organized in 2013 at the University of Genova, thanks to a cooperation with the Université Paris-Sorbonne, following in the footsteps of a tradition inaugurated by Giancarlo Bolognesi in the years '80 and '90. The subject is explored from many points of view: the topic of Armenian translations of Greek texts – with considerations of a methodological nature and the discussion of case-studies –, aspects which pertain to the historical context and the historiographical sources, the wide theme of the Armenian reception of Biblical, Christian and Byzantine literature, and finally philological, linguistic and lexical problems. The aim of this kind of research is to exploit the cooperation among classical philologists, linguists and Armenologists, in order to face the challenge of investigating a subject which requires many different competences.
