Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Physics - Nuclear Physics, Molecular Physics, Solid State Physics, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (-), course: PH.D., language: English, abstract: Wide scope is available to study these aspects of ferrite which at present to our knowledge was not probe by researchers. In relevance to the ever expanding possibilities, and potential that is available with the ferrite materials, the scope of presently undertaken work is designed carefully by selecting suitable ferrite and dopants. A sincere attempt was made to extract fruitful, exhaustive and, systematic information regarding structural, cation distribution, electrical, dielectric and magnetic aspects of the ferrite systems under investigations. In the present study, the properties of nickel ferrites substituted by diamagnetic Zn2+, non-magnetic trivalent In3+ ions and tetravalent Ce4+ ions are studied for various compositions. The properties are investigated with a view to understand the effect of divalent, trivalent and tetravalent substitution in nickel ferrite. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 related to Scope, problem statement, theory of magnetism, ferrites, background, motivation and aim of the present work, properties of the samples under investigations, objective and outline of thesis. Chapter 2, 3 and 4 related to results and discussion of structural, electrical and magnetic properties of Ni1-xZnxFe2O4, NiInxFe2-xO4 and Ni1-2xCexFe2O4 ferrite system respectively. Chapter 5 gives the summary, discussion and conclusion on Zn, In and Ce substituted nickel ferrite. On summarizing the results obtained on Ni-Zn, Ni-In and Ni-Ce spinel ferrites it can be concluded that; - The structural properties are found to be varying in all the three systems. The lattice parameter of Ni ferrite systems increases with increasing valancy of dopants (Zn2+, In3+ and Ce4+). - The other prominent parameter of our structural study i.e. p

Book excerpt: The first natural magnetic material found to man in pre historic time was magnetite (Fe3O4), which is now known as ferrous ferrite. The story of ferrites begins with the search for ferromagnetic material of usual high resistivity to obtain reasonable low eddy current losses. When ferrimagnetic materials placed in alternating field, eddy current generates into them, which dissipates energy. These losses can be reduced by lamination of ferrimagnetic core to restrict eddy current. Since, eddy current losses are inversely proportional to the resistivity; they can be minimized by use of magnetic materials of high resistivity. Ferrites having resistivity of up to 107Ωm as compared to 10-7Ωm of iron, reduces the eddy current losses in them to a negligible value, even at microwave frequencies.

They belong to a technologically important class of magnetic materials which have high resistivity and chemical stability. These properties make them suitable for a wide variety of applications, where other magnetic materials cannot be used. Magnetic, electric, and structural properties of ferrites are tunable. These are currently of great research interest due to the ease of tailoring their magnetic properties by systematic substitution of cations and by proper choice of preparation techniques and post preparation treatments. The Cr3+cations have a strong preference to occupy in the B-site and have an affinity for anti-ferromagnetic coupling with Fe ions. Thus, partial or total substitution of one of the cations with Cr3+ induces magnetic frustrations in the spinel ferrite system, which leads to interesting magnetic properties. Therefore, it is very interesting to study variation in magnetic properties on replacement of Cr in the place of Fe in spinel ferrites. This chapter explains tailoring of magnetic and structural properties of some spinel ferrites via solution-self-combustion, fuel-to-oxidizer ratio substitution, and proper substitution.

Book excerpt: Ferrites are ceramic, homogeneous materials composed of various oxides with iron oxide as their main constituent. Ferrites are a class of ceramic ferromagnetic materials that by definition can be magnetized to produce large magnetic flux densities in response to small applied magnetization forces. Further, ferrites are chemical compounds, ceramic with iron (III) oxide Fe2O3 as their principal components [1]. Ferrites are usually non-conductive ferrimagnetic ceramic compounds derived from iron oxides such as hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4) as well as oxides of other metals. Ferrites are, like most other ceramics, hard and brittle. Many of them are magnetic materials and they are used to make permanent magnets, ferrite cores for transformers and in various other applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porous ceramics have recently gained growing importance in industry because of their many applications like filters, absorbers, dust collectors, thermal insulation, hot gas collectors, dielectric resonators, bioreactors, bone replacement and automobile engine components. Generally, porous ceramics have good properties such as mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and chemical and thermal stability. These porous network ceramic structures also have relatively low density, low mass and low thermal conductivity. Furthermore, permeability is one of the most important properties of porous ceramics for different applications such as membranes because this property directly relates to the pressure drop during filtration. Pore size control is one key factor in fabrication of porous ceramics. The size of particles and their distribution of the raw materials, manufacturing techniques, types of binder used, distribution of binder, and sintering affect the final porosity and pore connectivity, are important things that must be considered during the manufacturing of a porous ceramic body. Therefore, the development of porous ceramic research requires sufficient mechanical and chemical stability as well as permeability. This book covers a wide range of topics such as porous ceramic structure and properties, preparation, simulation and fabrication, sintering, applications for bioceramics, sensors, magnetics and energy saving.

Ferrites are ferrimagnetic cubic spinels which possess combine properties of magnetic materials and electrical insulators; they have been intensively investigated in being the subject of great interest because of their importance in many applications. Spinel ferrites have received special attention over the last decade because of their extensive use in many applications such as transmitting microwave devices, computer memory chips, magnetic recording media, and radio frequency coil fabrication, transformer cores, catalysis, photocatalysis, magnetically guided drug delivery, hyperthermia and many branches of telecommunication and electronic engineering. The features of spinel structure show that these ferrites have eight formula units per unit cell. A unit cell comprises eight tetrahedral and sixteen octahedral sites with AB2O4 where (A) and (B) refer to the tetrahedral and octahedral cation sites respectively. In inverse spinel structure, the tetrahedral (A) site.

Book excerpt: Ferrites are used in wide range of technological applications like core transformer, recorder heads, memory chips, antenna rod etc. due to their magnetic and electric properties. The crystal structure of these materials controls their physical properties. Ferrites have a very low conductivity, which is one of the considerations for microwave applications. The basic electrical and magnetic properties of the ferrites depend upon method of preparation site and valence distribution etc. Among all the ferrites, copper ferrite is interesting and have many technological applications because copper ferrite shows tetragonal structure , changing semi conductive properties and electrical switching when heat-treated under different conditions. Therefore, the electrical and magnetic properties of copper ferrite can be changed with its structure. Further, the presence of Jahn-Teller ion Cu2+ in copper ferrite can lead to a change in electrical and magnetic properties. The influence of Jahn-Teller ion Cu2+ at the octahedral [B] sites can be modified by trivalent and tetravalent ions. Magnetic dilution due to substitution of non-magnetic atoms gives rise to interesting magnetic structures in compounds with spinel structure.
