Book excerpt: The world of business is constantly evolving and management education institutions will likely face a number of challenges in keeping up with these changes. While most books focus on the needs of management education institutions, this work addresses the needs of the corporate world in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Featuring an extensive research study spanning 11 countries, it offers a unique perspective on the business challenges and developmental needs of companies in emerging and recently emerged economies, and on the missing links between those needs and management education. Using both company-specific and country-level data, the book provides businesses and educators with rare insights and recommendations on strengthening existing partnerships (or establishing them anew) between management education institutions and the corporate sector in order to make management education relevant for the 21st century. The book argues that ‘relevance’ should take the center-stage of all higher education institutions in order to accomplish their third mission, namely service to society. This is especially important for management education institutions, whose mission is to mold future managers and leaders who can have a significant influence on economic success and the wellbeing of society.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes the challenges of developing and implementing effective policies for educational leadership in South-East Europe (SEE) and the Nordic-Baltic region. While individual countries from the Nordic-Baltic region are praised for their educational achievements, the SEE region could be considered as a (post)transitional landscape: these two educational contexts present their own unique challenges, notably international benchmarking and the ‘Europeization’ of educational policy. Seamlessly integrating theoretical framework with the goals and experiences of actors and practitioners, the editors and contributors build an accessible overview of existing policy research and its conflicting theoretical perspectives. Often disregarded by the mainstream literature, the countries and regions chosen provide a snapshot into the challenges of developing policies for educational leadership. This thoughtful yet practical volume will be of interest and value not only to students and scholars of educational leadership in these regions, but to practitioners and policy makers more widely.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the activities of various bodies providing training impetus for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Europe on the three levels of (1) basic management education for potential small and medium-sized business owners and/or managers; (2) programs for small firm start-ups; and (3) activities to improve the management of already existing small and medium-sized enterprises. Taking into account the assumed growing needs for training measures on all three levels, the report gives an overview on what measures are offered, as well as an analysis of those measures in terms of the current challenges in the business environment--characterized by growing worldwide competitiveness and rapid technological change. A summary is provided of the different methods used in the various countries, how the support components are related to each other, and how the results can be judged by comparing claims and results. Suggestions for more appropriate solutions are offered. Six case studies of small business development programs in England, Ireland, West Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain are included in the report. (KC)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of management education and research has become an industry of its own an industry with fierce international competition in a global arena. Here, the authors argue that a series of mechanisms has led to mimicking and thus strategic convergence among business schools. The authors further argue that this has resulted in a loss of relevance and diversity of the management knowledge produced and taught in a multipolar world. They view this as counterproductive to business schools, students, firms, societies and other stakeholders, including scholars themselves. Based in part on the work of SFM (Société Française de Management the French Academy of Management), the authors of this volume endeavour to engage in strategic conversations with stakeholders in an effort to reshape the field of management studies. Redesigning Management Education and Research revisits the foundations of management research and education, suggests ways to redesign the content taught to better fit the needs of firms and society at large, and proposes actions and concrete examples of what could be done to restructure the institutional setting of the field of management. This book calls for collective strategies from management scholars to influence some of the de facto regulation mechanisms that have appeared over recent years, such as business school rankings and the race for publication in a narrow list of academic journals. This book is also a plea for working on those issues beyond the specificities of national contexts to encompass a broader regional perspective in order to reshape the rules of the game in management education and research. Teachers, researchers and deans, as well as practitioners from all areas of business will find this volume illuminating. It offers an ambitious vision and a practical framework aimed squarely at remaking management education and research to be relevant to the demands of the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This attractively presented edited collection is a welcome analysis of issues facing universities. It consists of 14 chapters by experts who work in university management and economics departments. . . this is an excellent collection. Its value stems from the fact that it enables comparisons to be made and to see that globally the traditional university system is being seriously challenged. The authors in this collection provide a range of perspectives on how the universities in their various locations can begin to respond to these challenges. Anthony Potts, Journal of Educational Administration and History The future of the university, this old European institution, is of utmost interest not only to university students and teachers, but to whole societies; not only in Europe, but in the whole world, as the institution has become global. Nobody can predict it, but the editors of this volume were able to ask incisive questions and collected thoughtful and provocative answers, which can contribute to the debate on the fate of universities in a significant way. Barbara Czarniawska, University of Gothenburg, Sweden While acknowledging the value of better university management, this book resists the idea that an externally imposed standardization and a more homogenous European system of higher education adds up to a desiderata. On the contrary the book editors argue that the persistence of the university and its survival in the future is aided by differences between universities. European Universities in Transition is must reading for students of higher education reform. Francisco O. Ramirez, Stanford University, US This timely and important book provides a critical analysis of the changes and challenges that currently affect European universities. Using both theoretical contributions and applied case studies, leading experts argue that universities as institutions are in need of change although the routes that the process may take are heterogeneous. The authors debate whether the reform of universities suffers from the undue influence of generalisations that do not stand up to scrutiny. It is simply too narrow to focus on strategies such as imitating a university model , hoping that best practices will solve the inefficiencies of the organisation as a whole, or relying on the presence of few external individuals on the universities board to save the difficult relationships between the university and the surrounding economy and society. These ideas ignore the diversity of universities geographically and historically. Above all, they underestimate the power that such diversity holds in making universities survive across centuries. Researchers with an interest in university reform will appreciate this important contribution to the debate, whilst policymakers and university administrators will find this book invaluable in understanding the changes and problems facing European universities and gaining insights on possible solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of teaching in higher education has been widely discussed for years, in Poland and abroad alike. As regards our domestic situation, the problem has been intensifying since our transformation in 1989 due to the increase in the number of private universities, experiencing difficulties in providing adequate academic staff for didactic purposes. These types of problems are also noticeable abroad; especially in the context of the requirements imposed by the Bologna Process and the recommendations of the European Union. That is why an international research project came into being. The project was financed by the Department of Applied Economics of the Jagiellonian University and it was joined by universities from the USA, Ukraine, Russia, Algeria, Germany and Poland. The results of the research carried out under the auspices of Professor Tadeusz Wawak have been presented in the present monograph. It can be noticed that the problems which particular universities are struggling with are similar. It is also important to say that the completion of the tasks in the scope of pro quality management restructuring at the university demands the implementation of the principles of Total Quality Management. Excerpt from the review by Professor Stanisław Tkaczyk The book focuses on the problems of university management. The authors of individual chapters are educational researchers from the USA, Russia, Algeria, the Ukraine and Poland. Each of them presents problems existing in their own academic environment, on the basis of their personal experience. Thus the reader is presented with a full range of currently discussed topics by the institutions responsible for the functioning of the system of education. They comprise, among others, New Economy promoting New University, the process of globalization and integration, the Bologna Process with adjustment to its recommendations and the internationalization of higher education. A comprehensive analysis of the condition of the Ukrainian academic education deserves special attention. Not only does it describe its present state but it also contains its critical assessment and a series of proposals including the need to implement the necessary structural changes in this area and to create a comprehensive system improving the quality of university management. Additionally, the book contains descriptions of new technologies and concepts of education which have emerged recently in the context of the required procedural reform, as well as interesting research findings carried out among students in Algeria. Excerpt from the review by Professor Tadeusz Grabiński

Firstly, management education is changing rapidly to meet new challenges from business and governments and to improve competitiveness. Secondly, management education has become one of the fastest growing areas in higher education. Management Education and Competitiveness provides a wide overview, including studies by scholars in nine countries in Europe, Japan and the United States. It examines how countries have developed different national courses in spite of strong influence from the American system of management education. It also examines the links between education and business. This collection of essays will be invaluable to managers and professionals in educational research and business administration.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today as never before, it is imperative that university managers possess the knowledge and the competencies necessary for leading modern higher education institutions. Professional management enables higher education institutions to cooperate more effectively with partners ranging from local businesses to international enterprises and other stakeholders. As higher education institutions grow larger and extend their reach into new areas and the functions demanded of them multiply, academic administration and management become increasingly complex, thus, the need for skilled management and administrative personnel becomes more acute. This book emerged as the product of the European Higher Education Management and Development (EHEMD) project, a European multilateral curriculum development project under the coordination of the Danube University Krems and funded by the European Union in the framework of the Erasmus Lifelong Learning Programme. Focusing not only on theoretical points of view, but also on their practical applications as demonstrated in the accompanying case studies, the publication covers the key aspects of modern university management. The booklet is structured so that each chapter presents a particular aspect and application of university management and the entire volume reflects the core contents of the EHEMD curriculum. Can higher education management be taught? While we confidently say “yes!”, the answer needs some qualification. The “yes” applies because higher education management is no different from any other subject in the social sciences. The qualification is that a sound pedagogical philosophy and structure need to underpin such a programme. The fundamentals of the EHEMD programme are that it is interdisciplinary, that it is practice-oriented and that students learn from each other and also learn independently. With a strong emphasis on Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, this book addresses management challenges in higher education today and in the near future.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about education system reform in Central and Eastern Europe, with emphasis on decentralization and management. In the past, local authorities served as implementation arms of the central ministry, while finance and decision-making were controlled by the central government, leaving local communities with little influence. New education laws in most countries of the region have altered this balance. A moderate approach may be the least disruptive short-term solution for societies undergoing socioeconomic transition. In 1997 the World Bank Institute participated in a research project to study intergovernmental roles in the delivery of education services in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania. Each country assembled a research team of academics, educators, and policy advisors led by an education specialist. Each team produced a report, which was discussed and revised during four information-sharing seminars, and they are presented here. The challenge these countries face is how to develop new institutions that can effectively enlist state, civil-society, and private-sector resources to achieve educational goals. This book should be of interest to educators and other readers interested in Central and Eastern European area studies. Its multidisciplinary methodology will also provide useful insights to development policymakers in other sectors. (RT)
