Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume presents data describing the role of oxidative stress in anterior eye disease. The content is divided into three logical parts: basic science of the cornea, basic science of the lens, and clinical practices. The first two parts include eighteen chapters that discuss topics ranging from oxidative stress and dry eye disease, endogenous protection of corneal cells against oxidative damage, the therapeutic potential of corneal stem cells, etiology of cataracts and preventive measures, corneal degeneration through oxidative stress and cataract formation, and function and dysregulation of ion channels and transporters in the ocular lens, among others. The concluding part is comprised of four chapters devoted to advancements in corneal surgery, cataract and diabetic retinopathy, the clinical treatment of cataracts including traumatic cataracts, and cataracts in the pediatric age group. Studies on the Cornea and Lens is an essential addition to the library or department of physicians and researchers who treat or research these ocular conditions, particularly cataracts. It is also a key resource for cell biologists studying oxidative stress. This book is an authoritative contribution to Springer’s Oxidative Stress in Applied Basic Research and Clinical Practice series.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes current understanding of the scientific, clinical, and technical issues surrounding the use of contact lenses. It discusses the special occupational conditions experienced by military personnel, particularly in extreme environments, that give rise to the question of whether or not to use contact lenses. Experts in optometry, ophthalmology, visual psychophysics, and engineering describe recent developments in design and use; and representatives of the military services provide examples of actual situations in aerospace settings. Considerations in Contact Lens Use Under Adverse Conditions will be of particular interest to those involved in the design of contact lenses and those responsible for occupational safety and health matters in the private sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on the Cornea continue a tradition of summarizing the state-of-the art basic and clinical research in cornea and ex ternal diseases since the first Congress was held in 1964. Reflecting the emerging impor tance of refractive surgery, two of the twelve sessions of the Congress were devoted to refractive surgery; this is reflected in an emphasis in these Proceedings. In addition, an en tire session was devoted to the molecular and cellular biology of the cornea with impor tant new information on the role of growth factors and cytokine modulation of corneal wound healing. Within these Proceedings an international group of expert researchers and practitioners provide the latest insights into the tear film and ocular surface, corneal trans plantation and eyebanking, the corneal stroma and endothelium, contact lenses, microbial and nonmicrobial keratitis, keratoconus, and world corneal health. Notable subjects covered include the latest understanding of the barrier function of the ocular surface epithelium, corneal hydration control, the molecular mechanisms con trolling gene expression in corneal wound healing, stromal~pithelial interactions in the cornea, the immunology of blepharitis, the effect of contact lenses on the conjunctiva, morphologic and functional evaluation of the human corneal endothelium, long-term fol low-up of penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus, the Tampa trephine penetrating kerato plasty, and the refractive results of the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser.

In this edition the editors have incorporated relevant basic science information into the clinical science chapters. It also contains an expanded surgery section - especially refractive surgery. Emphasis on the third edition is on clinical information (the basic science has been incorporated into the clincial chapters). The clinical section has been expanded by ten per cent to reflect changes in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Essentials in Ophthalmology" is a new review series covering all of ophthalmology categorized in eight subspecialties. It will be published quarterly, thus each subspecialty will be reviewed biannually. Given the multiplicity of medical publications already available, why is a new series needed? Consider that the half-life of medical knowledge is estimated to be around 5 years. Moreover, it can be as long as 8 years between the first description of a medical innovation in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and publication in a medical textbook. A series that narrows this time span between journal and textbook would provide a more rapid and efficient transfer of medical knowledge into clinical practice, and enhance care of our patients.

Book excerpt: Four chamber subjects wearing various hydrogel contact lenses underwent hyperbaric exposures to 150 Feet Sea Water (FSWG) with a bottom time of 30 minutes for a total of 24 lens trials. No displacement of the lenses was reported, but bubbles formed in twenty-five percent of the trials. They were not, however, noticed by the subjects and did not significantly affect vision or corneal physiology. Keywords: Divers; Vision; Diving

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first introduction to the eye came more than three decades ago when my close friend and mentor, the late Professor Isaac C. Michaelson, convinced me that studying the biochemistry of ocular tissues would be a rewarding pursuit. I hastened to explain that I knew nothing about the subject, since relatively few basic biochemical studies on ocular tissues had appeared in the world literature. Professor Michaelson assured me, however, that two books on eye biochemistry had already been written. One of them, a beautiful monograph by Arlington Krause ( 1934) of Johns Hopkins Hospital, is we II worth reading even today for its historical perspective. The other, published 22 years later, was written by Antoinette Pirie and Ruth van Heyningen ( 1956), whose pioneering achievements in eye biochemistry at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology in Oxford, England are known throughout the eye research community and beyond. To their credit are classical investigations on retinal, corneal, and lens biochemistry, beginning in the 1940s and continuing for many decades thereafter. Their important book written in 1956 on the Biochemistry of the Eye is a volume that stood out as a landmark in this field for many years. In recent years, however, a spectacular amount of new information has been gener ated in ocular biochemistry. Moreover, there is increasing specialization among investiga tors in either a specific field of biochemistry or a particular ocular tissue.

Book excerpt: As the first comprehensive reference for the eye, its support structures, diseases, and treatments, Encyclopedia of the Eye is an important resource for all visual scientists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists, as well as researchers in immunology, infectious disease, cell biology, neurobiology and related disciplines. This four-volume reference is unique in its coverage of information on all tissues important for vision, including the retina, cornea and lens. It also covers the physiological and pathophysiologic processes that affect all eye tissues. This Encyclopedia is invaluable for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are seeking an introduction to an area of eye research. Each chapter explains the basic concepts and provides references to relevant chapters within the Encyclopedia and more detailed articles across the wider research literature. The Encyclopedia is also particularly useful for visual scientists and practitioners who are researching a new area, seeking deeper understanding of important research articles in fields adjacent to their own, or reviewing a grant outside their immediate area of expertise. Written by experts at a level that permits students to grasp key elements of a specific subject Provides an entryway into the major features of current eye research No other source puts this much information, so well-indexed and with so many helpful full color figures and graphics, in the hands of the ophthalmic scientist
