Download or read book Studies on the Cornea and Lens written by Mark A. Babizhayev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume presents data describing the role of oxidative stress in anterior eye disease. The content is divided into three logical parts: basic science of the cornea, basic science of the lens, and clinical practices. The first two parts include eighteen chapters that discuss topics ranging from oxidative stress and dry eye disease, endogenous protection of corneal cells against oxidative damage, the therapeutic potential of corneal stem cells, etiology of cataracts and preventive measures, corneal degeneration through oxidative stress and cataract formation, and function and dysregulation of ion channels and transporters in the ocular lens, among others. The concluding part is comprised of four chapters devoted to advancements in corneal surgery, cataract and diabetic retinopathy, the clinical treatment of cataracts including traumatic cataracts, and cataracts in the pediatric age group. Studies on the Cornea and Lens is an essential addition to the library or department of physicians and researchers who treat or research these ocular conditions, particularly cataracts. It is also a key resource for cell biologists studying oxidative stress. This book is an authoritative contribution to Springer’s Oxidative Stress in Applied Basic Research and Clinical Practice series.

Book excerpt: These Proceedings of the Fourth International Congress on the Cornea continue a tradition of summarizing the state-of-the art basic and clinical research in cornea and ex ternal diseases since the first Congress was held in 1964. Reflecting the emerging impor tance of refractive surgery, two of the twelve sessions of the Congress were devoted to refractive surgery; this is reflected in an emphasis in these Proceedings. In addition, an en tire session was devoted to the molecular and cellular biology of the cornea with impor tant new information on the role of growth factors and cytokine modulation of corneal wound healing. Within these Proceedings an international group of expert researchers and practitioners provide the latest insights into the tear film and ocular surface, corneal trans plantation and eyebanking, the corneal stroma and endothelium, contact lenses, microbial and nonmicrobial keratitis, keratoconus, and world corneal health. Notable subjects covered include the latest understanding of the barrier function of the ocular surface epithelium, corneal hydration control, the molecular mechanisms con trolling gene expression in corneal wound healing, stromal~pithelial interactions in the cornea, the immunology of blepharitis, the effect of contact lenses on the conjunctiva, morphologic and functional evaluation of the human corneal endothelium, long-term fol low-up of penetrating keratoplasty in keratoconus, the Tampa trephine penetrating kerato plasty, and the refractive results of the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser.

Book Synopsis Cornea and External Eye Disease by : Thomas Reinhard
Download or read book Cornea and External Eye Disease written by Thomas Reinhard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Essentials in Ophthalmology" is a new review series covering all of ophthalmology categorized in eight subspecialties. It will be published quarterly, thus each subspecialty will be reviewed biannually. Given the multiplicity of medical publications already available, why is a new series needed? Consider that the half-life of medical knowledge is estimated to be around 5 years. Moreover, it can be as long as 8 years between the first description of a medical innovation in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and publication in a medical textbook. A series that narrows this time span between journal and textbook would provide a more rapid and efficient transfer of medical knowledge into clinical practice, and enhance care of our patients.

Book Synopsis Biochemistry of the Eye by : Elaine R. Berman
Download or read book Biochemistry of the Eye written by Elaine R. Berman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-04-30 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My first introduction to the eye came more than three decades ago when my close friend and mentor, the late Professor Isaac C. Michaelson, convinced me that studying the biochemistry of ocular tissues would be a rewarding pursuit. I hastened to explain that I knew nothing about the subject, since relatively few basic biochemical studies on ocular tissues had appeared in the world literature. Professor Michaelson assured me, however, that two books on eye biochemistry had already been written. One of them, a beautiful monograph by Arlington Krause ( 1934) of Johns Hopkins Hospital, is we II worth reading even today for its historical perspective. The other, published 22 years later, was written by Antoinette Pirie and Ruth van Heyningen ( 1956), whose pioneering achievements in eye biochemistry at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology in Oxford, England are known throughout the eye research community and beyond. To their credit are classical investigations on retinal, corneal, and lens biochemistry, beginning in the 1940s and continuing for many decades thereafter. Their important book written in 1956 on the Biochemistry of the Eye is a volume that stood out as a landmark in this field for many years. In recent years, however, a spectacular amount of new information has been gener ated in ocular biochemistry. Moreover, there is increasing specialization among investiga tors in either a specific field of biochemistry or a particular ocular tissue.
