Book excerpt: For eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an audience with a gypsy fortune-teller at the Bishop's Lacey village fete is just a bit of fun. Until the old woman sees (or claims to see) a vision of Flavia's mother, Harriet, who died on a mountain side in Tibet when Flavia was a baby. 'She is trying to come home,' the old woman intones, chilling them both. With only her faithful bicycle, Gladys, and her precocious powers of deduction to help her, Flavia starts down a dark and twisting road to the truth.

Book Synopsis Planning and Budgeting in Poor Countries by : Naomi Caiden
Download or read book Planning and Budgeting in Poor Countries written by Naomi Caiden and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantial treatment of budgeting in poor countries and discussion of the relationship between planning and budgeting covers over eighty nations and three-fourths of the worlds population. While there are many treatments of planning, the approach of this study is radically different. The authors argue that the requisites of comprehensive economic planning do not exist in poor countries, and that in the effort to create them, planners merge into the environment they have set out to change. Caiden and Wildavsky provide a unique and thorough examination of planning and budgeting by governments of poor countries throughout the world, and recommend reforms that are workable and realistic for these countries. They analyze the political, economic, and social developments that influence budgeting and planning in developing countries.

Download or read book Islam written by Jacques Waardenburg and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some twenty essays on different aspects of Islam in history and the present. These essays are grouped into eight larger sections. The first, "The Beginnings", deals with the transition from pre-Islamic understandings and reason, an essential part of the Quranic message. The next two sections deal with Islam specifically as a religion with its particular signs and symbols. The question of rules of interpretation in Islam and its structural features is discussed here. Sections four and five deal with ethics in Islam, including Muslim identity and human rights, and certain social functions of Islam. Section six introduces some 19th and 20th century reform movements, with special attention given to developments in Saudi Arabia and the "puritan" characteristics of present-day Islamic revival movements. The final two sections discuss contemporary issues: Islamization processes and policies, Islamic ideologies, the ideologization of Islam, and the political uses of religion. Throughout the book the author shows the links between the religious and other interpretations and uses made of Islam and the contexts in which they are made. The Introduction signals some important developments in Islamic studies since World War II.
