Book excerpt: Studies on ac losses in superconductors have been a subject of great interest for a long time not only as an important topic in fundamental science, but also as a basic requirement for the application of superconductors. A proper understanding of the mechanisms of ac losses and their quantitative knowledge is an essential requirement for any application. Such studies not only yield information on the material parameters crucial for applications but can also provide a test for any possible microscopic theory of superconductivity. The main focus of the current thesis is to understand the mechanisms of ac losses in superconductors and to gain more knowledge on the ac dissipative behavior of type II superconductors. In this thesis we report our investigations on the ac losses in certain type II superconductors at different ranges of frequency through different experimental techniques. We have investigated the ac losses that arise in high Tc superconducting single crystals at rf frequency (8 MHz) using a simple LC oscillator technique. The result shows a surprising ac dissipation behavior in which the loss in the superconducting state is more than the normal state loss. Even though the superconducting state is defined as the zero resistive state, this is true only for dc transport. The ac resistivity studies have been made also on high Tc polycrystalline samples using the standard four-probe technique using a lock-in amplifier (100 kHz). The result shows different ac resistive behavior for samples with different microstructures. Non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) studies in MgB2 thin films is reported for the first time. The experiment has been performed using a continuous wave X band EPR spectrometer. The recorded signals give information on the ac losses that occurs at microwave frequency (9.43 GHz). The effects of ac magnetic field on the superconductors have been investigated through a dc four-probe resistivity measurements in the presence of an ac field of dif.
Book Synopsis Study of Second Generation High Temperature Superconductors: Electromagnetic Characteristics and AC Loss Analysis by : Boyang Shen

This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis introduces a systematic study on Second Generation (2G) High Temperature Superconductors (HTS), covering a novel design of an advanced medical imaging device using HTS, and an in-depth investigation on the losses of HTS. The text covers the design and simulation of a superconducting Lorentz Force Electrical Impedance Tomography. This is potentially a significant medical device that is more efficient and compact than an MRI, and is capable of detecting early cancer, as well as other pathologies such stroke and internal haemorrhages. It also presents the information regarding the fundamental physics of superconductivity, concentrating on the AC losses in superconducting coils and tapes. Overall, the thesis signifies an important contribution to the investigation of High Temperature Superconductors. This thesis will be beneficial to the development of advanced superconducting applications in healthcare as well as more broadly in electrical and energy systems.

Download or read book Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Volume 2 written by B Seeber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 1258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Applied Superconductivity, Two-Volume Set covers all important aspects of applied superconductivity and the supporting low-temperature technologies. The handbook clearly demonstrates the capabilities of superconducting technologies and illustrates how to implement these technologies in new areas of academic and industrial research and development. Volume One provides an introduction to the theoretical background of both low and high Tc superconductivity, followed by details of the basic hardware such as wires, tapes, and cables used in applications of superconductivity and the necessary supporting science and technology. Theoretical discussions are in most cases followed by examples of real designs, fabrication techniques, and practical instrumentation guidance. A final chapter examines materials properties at low temperatures. Volume Two provides examples of current and future applications of superconductivity. It covers medical systems for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high field magnets for research, superconducting magnets for accelerators, industrial systems for magnetic separation, and transportation systems. The final chapters look to future applications in power and superconducting electronics. With fully referenced, peer-refereed contributions from experts in various fields, this two-volume work is an essential reference for a wide range of scientists and engineers in academic and industrial research and development environments.
